How can she be left like this? Take her back to A&E?

Posting for traffic has honestly I'm terrified something is seriously wrong with my Mum and don't know what to do so please be nice.

Last week she started with some pain that she says feels like it's right at the very bottom of her ribs and radiating round the sides. She was in agony, basically screaming with pain so I took her to A&E on the advice of 111. All obs and ECG were normal but the blood tests were abnormal. They were going to do a CT scan but then decided as her obs were ok and they didn't think there was a bleed as no fall/injury, they were not going to do a CT scan there but would refer it to the GP to arrange BUT because of the blood test results and recent weightloss, they wanted it done urgently under the "2 week rule" and from his grave tone, I highly suspect he thinks it's cancer and serious. They couldn't/wouldn't give her anymore painkillers because of the painkillers she's on for severe arthritis but these are not touching the pain.

Fast forward to today, she has been in absolute agony since Thursday and seems worse today and can barely move. She's exhausted and crying/screaming in pain. My sister called 999 today but they said as not life threatening they won't send an ambulance but had to speak to GP within an hour. GP receptionist tried to say no appointments so we couldn't speak to GP but after I explained the issue (and she could hear my Mum crying out in pain) she finally agreed to pass a message to the GP so currently waiting to see if GP will call back today or not. Mum says if I take her back to A&E we'll be sat for hours again and nothing will be done but I can't just sit here and watch her in so much pain and do nothing.

What do I do?! Do I make her let me take her to A&E? Do we wait to see if the GP will call? Just feel so helpless

I am really glad you are in A&E now. It really is shocking that she was left to suffer like that. I hope that they find the cause quickly OP.

ChrisPPancake · 23/01/2023 22:32

Glad you're in A&E. Have they at least given her a chest x-ray even if no CT? I had pain at the bottom of my ribcage when I had pleurisy. One of the worst pains I've ever had tbh! Genuinely considered just stopping breathing at one point just so it would go away.
Hope your mum gets some relief soon Flowers

I'm sorry but you are wrong - they don't deal with life threatening emergencies.

A&E haven’t helped her either though.

CuriousMama · 23/01/2023 22:35

Your poor mum. Really hope they get to the bottom of this asap.

ChubbyChinook · 23/01/2023 22:36

Your poor mum, I hope she is seen quickly tonight. And you get some answers.

frotthle · 23/01/2023 22:37

This is awful and so seemingly more common now - to just be left. I have no words. Sending strength OP X

Redraddisho27 · 23/01/2023 22:39

Pancreatitus maybe?

bloodywhitecat · 23/01/2023 22:39

The marker for pancreatic and related cancer is CA19-9. Good luck OP, I hope you get some answers

FlumpyLump · 23/01/2023 22:40

I had similar pain a few years ago. At the bottom of my rib cage to the right of my stomach which radiated to the kidney area at the back. It was awful.
I had lost quite a bit of weight very quickly and it triggered gallstones. Had to have my gallbladder removed.
The pain from gallstones was worse than childbirth.
Pain like that could be gallstones, kidney infection/stones or pancreatitis. Each one is very painful and gives similar symptoms.
Hopefully your mum gets sorted this time. Xx

IncessantNameChanger · 23/01/2023 22:45

Good luck op x

Private doesn't deal with emergency stuff like this.

Well they would certainly deal with it quicker than 2 weeks.

SauMore · 23/01/2023 22:47

You've done the right thing going to A&E OP. I really hope your mum gets some medical help to relieve her symptoms tonight Flowers

Mirabai · 23/01/2023 22:51

Good luck OP, it’s sounds horrendous x

Rstuvwxyz · 23/01/2023 22:51

Oh your poor mum 🥺 hopefully a&e is much quicker this time fdue to strikes - maybe less waiting due to less people? Hope she’s seen and assessed soon!

Jasminesmellingcandles · 23/01/2023 22:56

Thinking of your Mum , hope she is pain free very soon x

CavalierApproach · 23/01/2023 23:00

I’m so sorry op, this sounds terrible. The amount of stories like this lately — it’s terrifying. Really hope your poor mum gets some proper help very soon.

rach2713 · 23/01/2023 23:03

I hope your mum is ok and the pain gets under control 💐

Energydrink · 23/01/2023 23:03

That is so dreadful and I am so sorry to hear your mum is in such pain. I had EXACTLY what your mum is experiencing… turn out to be gallstones which progressed into pancreatic infection. I was taken to hospital in an ambulance sent by 111

please push to get her seen! X

User963 · 23/01/2023 23:07

I doubt that they did bloods for cancer markers when admitted to A and E with pain but I’m no expert. I would have thought they just did standard blood tests. I hope they can help her pain tonight

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 23/01/2023 23:13

I hope your mum is seen soon and they deal with her pain and get to the bottom of what’s causing it. Hopefully is is easily treatable and she’ll be feeling much better soon . It’s honestly a huge fear of mine for me or a loved one to be in terrible pain and fear and not be helped. God bless x

HolibobsinApril · 23/01/2023 23:15

This sounds so awful for you all. I hope you get it sorted. Your poor mum BrewFlowers

Verbena17 · 23/01/2023 23:19

Gallstone attacks (cholecystitis)will worsen if eating saturated fats so until she knows what it is, best not to eat any dairy or red meat if at all possible.

I would get a bag together ready for A&E with all the stuff people mentioned above and plenty of drinks and then take her in.
Ask the doctors ‘could it be gallstones/gallbladder rupture?’

I hope your mum is ok.

Seasider2017 · 23/01/2023 23:19

Hope your mum as got something stronger now for her pain, unfortunately some dr think they are god!
please be persistent this time and advocate for your mum, do not take her home this time until all relevant test have been done and looked at
ct scan done & looked at. Keep your cool and make sure she’s looked after as they should be doing

JenniferBooth · 23/01/2023 23:20

@Verbena17 When i had gallstones i couldnt eat SOLID food. I was dieting so couldnt eat stuff like that.

We are at A&E - oramorph didn't touch it. The nurse who triaged asked what the Dr did last week and seemed pretty horrified that she was sent home like this. She's told me this time to be firm and told me not to take her home until further tests done.

A PP said about the Dr probably saw cancer markers in her bloods - can they see that? What are the markers?

There can be markers in the blood for some cancers. However, a general blood test might show a marker that could also have several other causes. I've had that, and been referred on the two week pathway (not due to the market, other symptoms).

It seems to me if they saw that they should have told her. But either way, the bloods need to be run again and it sounds as if she needs to stay in for intravenous pain relief if nothing else.
