Well I totally messed that up

met DPs mum for the first time today. It could not have gone worse.

First, I walked dog shit onto her carpet.

Secondly - she was showing me around her bungalow and telling me she has only just moved in and it all needs decorating as the previous tenants had god awful taste. She used the hallway as an example. I agreed with her that it was awful, she then showed me her bathroom - I said it was even worse than the hallway. She’d just decorated the bathroom.

Thirdly, I knocked a glass off the kitchen side (trying to be helpful and take the mugs away), she was NOT happy at all, apparently she’d had those glasses for years.

Fourthly, I somehow damaged the flush on the toilet. I pressed it and it wouldn’t stop flushing. DP had to take the top off and mess with it.

To make me feel better, DP told me she didn’t like his ex “either” so not to worry.

Mortified and feel like calling time on the whole thing. I can never face her again.

@WineDup reply has made me do that deeply weird snort choke laugh thing. The dog looks highly alarmed at the weird noises.
Brilliant. Great username pun too.

I am the funniest person on the whole internet.

Frazzled25 · 22/01/2023 22:52

Gosh. Don’t some people take themselves super seriously!

Feraldogmum · 23/01/2023 01:33

Oops sounds like you were pretty anxious. I wouldn’t worry about it , she will have no doubt sensed it and if she doesn’t give you any leeway for that, is she worth the worry? Did she do her best to make you feel comfortable ?I would never make a guest feel bad about breaking anything by accident, no matter how expensive or valued .You could always send her some flowers to make up for the glass, check she doesn’t have allergies first though. Best of luck, hope he’s worth it.

My DH did a poo so big that he flooded my parents house when he met them...at our engagement party. 😂It will be okay.

POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONAMI!!!!😂😂😂

talkingmorenonsense · 23/01/2023 01:49

The first time I met my future MIL, it couldn’t have gone any worse. It went downhill from there. 😂

Sorry to not give you any hope @BlackenedDog .

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 23/01/2023 02:02

Perhaps it was a cunning trap, and it was MIL's poo 💩👀
The first time I went to stay with my prospective PIL, we were driven to the family home by his dad, who wore strangler leather driving gloves, listened to Radio 3 and gave me a speech about how "we don't stand on ceremony here"
Cue the same evening, and his mum asked if I would like to turn on the immersion heater to have a bath....her husband started to tremble before hurling a shoe at her. My boyfriend was silent, as was his mother. I heard myself demanding "what the fuck is wrong with that little wanker?😱".
His mum took me to one side in the kitchen and offered me a wee jar before bed-I enthusiastically agreed, and started looking for the tumblers, before I realised she meant a hot water bottle!!!!!!
We left the next morning.

🤣 Replace the carpet? Tad dramatic 👸

No, I agree..

It's not like it can wiped off as you could with tile or laminate.

So you'd have permanently poo stained carpet. Disgusting.

If people are too hooity toity to remove their shoes when entering someone else's property then they have to be prepared to pay up if by doing so they cause damage.

Imevery · 23/01/2023 02:31

My husband once stepped in dog poo, didn’t notice then ran all the way upstairs at my parents’ house. My mum, god bless her, said “I’m just glad you took the stairs two at a time.”

OriginalUsername2 · 23/01/2023 02:42

CREAM hallway carpets?!

TheDoraMilaje · 22/01/2023 01:02

I could never forgive walking dog poo into my house. Shoes should be off at the door. Everything else would be forgivable though, hope it gets better with MIL

"I could never forgive..." dramatic enough?

DeadbeatYoda · 23/01/2023 17:12

Arabellla · 22/01/2023 01:36

I have never stepped in dog shit in my life. I find adults who step in it because they weren’t paying attention quite annoying. It’s just my view, the MIL may not be that bothered.

😂😂😂
It could never happen to me! Only oiks step in dog poop. 😆😆😆
MN is bonkers

It seems like they’re an uptight, judgemental family (related to plenty of people in here maybe?) so I don’t think you’d ever be able to impress. I’m 1000% more likely to break something if I’m nervous and on edge so I totally get that, and any good host brushes it aside even if it’s a priceless antique! You don’t make a guest feel like shit if you’re a decent human being.

I absolutely agree with this. A professional clean of the carpet at the very least.

She wasn't being all hoity toity, she was following the cues from her boyfriend who did exactly the same thing except he hadn't stood in doggy doo.

I am sure if he had taken his shoes off outside then she would have done the same.

Jaxinthebox · 25/01/2023 18:55

so what's the update @BlackenedDog - has bf come to his senses, realised his mum was unreasonable and you made a mistake or have you ditched him?
