Well I totally messed that up

met DPs mum for the first time today. It could not have gone worse.

First, I walked dog shit onto her carpet.

Secondly - she was showing me around her bungalow and telling me she has only just moved in and it all needs decorating as the previous tenants had god awful taste. She used the hallway as an example. I agreed with her that it was awful, she then showed me her bathroom - I said it was even worse than the hallway. She’d just decorated the bathroom.

Thirdly, I knocked a glass off the kitchen side (trying to be helpful and take the mugs away), she was NOT happy at all, apparently she’d had those glasses for years.

Fourthly, I somehow damaged the flush on the toilet. I pressed it and it wouldn’t stop flushing. DP had to take the top off and mess with it.

To make me feel better, DP told me she didn’t like his ex “either” so not to worry.

Mortified and feel like calling time on the whole thing. I can never face her again.

DS1's girlfriend tripped up our stairs carrying a bowl of spaghetti bolognaise and got it all over our new carpet. She was shaking & crying afterwards. She has also made some absolute bloopers in terms of my weight loss and endometriosis. She is neurodiverse and just says what she sees, especially when anxious or nervous. I find it endearing and human and I have really warmed to her. She is a creative and dreamy and sensitive. These are good attributes. His Mum could have laughed it off and made you feel better - nerves change a person and by being nervy it shows you care about her son and what his family think of him.

The reactions say more about your DP and his Mum than you OP. Hope you are okay.

The bathroom bit 🤣🤣

If he's been like that with you fuck him off!

Onefootinthegroove · 22/01/2023 12:50

Well, the first ime I met MIL we told her I was pregnant then threw up on her driveway. ( not as bad as it sounds she lived abroad, we had spoken on the phone quite a few times). Got on great.
SMIL was more like your experience, but I sat on the cats favourite Chair and had the wrong accent . After 10 years we eventually became closer 🤷‍♀️

1stTimeMama · 22/01/2023 12:54

The first time I met my MIL, she opened the door, and my then boyfriend (now husband) said "This is 1stTime, she's pregnant!".

I stood there agog, only for her to ask when we were getting married (we'd only been together 3 months), and I had to tell her that I was actually currently married, and going through a divorce. Good times.

If you brought dog shit into my home I think I’d ask you to leave.

Ffs, I don’t think OP was reenacting Drop Dead Fred 🙄

Bless you OP, just sounds like you were having a very unlucky day!

Gin and Cake for you.

WetBandits · 22/01/2023 12:59

Oh and having read your update: bin him and his miserable mother!

WrendaleCountryDogs · 22/01/2023 13:00

Not quite the same but first day in a new job as a care worker in the community. I broke someone's shower (showered her ans then the shower wouldn't turn off), dropped a 50 year old plate and it smashed, knocked a mug of tea over in kitchen and it went absolutely everywhere, (all different people) and then my car had a puncture and I had to wait 2 hours for AA meaning someone else had to cover my calls.

5 years down the line and I'm still working for the same company although in a housing complex setting so no driving around.

Calling · 22/01/2023 13:03

OP, I was enjoying your thread so much that I burnt something on the stove!
You have a good sense of humour.
The accidents were mistakes and can be forgiven but her pink bathroom and ceiling are unforgivable!

Toomanybirthdays · 22/01/2023 13:03

You really have dodged a bullet…he sounds far too precious > Any decent person would have said don’t worry or just had a bloody good laugh about it ..lucky escape imho.

I presume they mean in their shoes rather than as a “thanks for hosting” present

Thank you @WineDup that just gave me a proper belly laugh!

LakieLady · 22/01/2023 13:07

She sounds absolutely ghastly OP.

Making a guest feel so uncomfortable is really rude imo.

This reminds me of the time I accidentally insulted my FIL by complimenting his costume for a fancy dress party (he immediately informed me that the party he was attending was not fancy dress).

It must have been about 5 years ago an I'm still cringing now!

Brilliant! 😂

Who on earth wouldn’t see the funny side of this?

Maybe he’s just moody right now as he’s being moaned at by his mother, so I would give him another chance. If it turns out he’s just as humourless as she is, then no big loss

If it wasn't a shoes-off house (and this is an excellent reason for shoeless houses) then she might have caused offence by doing it. In the shoes on/off house debates on here, I've been told that my shoeless house is common, lower class, dirtier than a shoes-on house, unwelcoming and that socked feet are utterly offensive to the sight of any right-thinking person.

Never ever let go of a shoeless house. I was brought up this way and I am still the same. Shoes off. If we have contractors or delivery people that need to come in, we offer shoe covers. People cannot walk through the house with shoes on. A big no no and I don't give a hoot if people think that is lower classs or whatever. I too take shoes off, or offer to, when we visit.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2023 13:12

They both sound like hard work

I'd leave him and Hyacinth to it tbh

Reminds me of when I was a teen in my then boyfriend's newly decorated. bedroom. Decorated by him based on what he'd told me.
His mother pipes up that she's going to decorate her bedroom shortly, so I say 'well I hope you're not letting him help you, look at the job he's done in here!'
Oh. Turns out she'd done it 😆🤣

You should have seen it though. Wallpapered on top of the existing wallpaper and instead of cutting into the corners she'd just papered across them 🤣 I'd never seen anything like it!

PollyAmour · 22/01/2023 13:15

Flowers, some replacement glassware and perhaps a bath bomb in the same shade as her terrible bathroom? That's what I would do. If she can't forgive you, then put it down to experience, and always, always wipe your feet or take off your shoes before walking into someone's home!!

Confrontayshunme · 22/01/2023 13:17

My DH did a poo so big that he flooded my parents house when he met them...at our engagement party. 😂It will be okay.

I’m not ashamed to say I have this print hidden in plain sight on my gallery wall in my living room 😁

Real photo not attached so I don’t out myself to anyone who’s spotted it in my house 😂

Well I totally messed that up
Forthelast · 22/01/2023 13:21

I actually love you.

That is a beautiful piece of art! Cherish it.

I'm so ordering a pizza and watching drop dead Fred tonight. Done 6 loads of laundry today, 20 weeks pregnant with a 10 month old terror, I feel like it's justified, and any excuse to watch drop dead Fred is valid 😂

arcencielpoisson · 22/01/2023 13:23

I'm sorry OP but that has made me really giggle.

What will be will be, but the only way from here, is up, surely!

It wasn’t gift wrapped !! Trodden accidentally into carpet. Shit happens !!

felulageller · 22/01/2023 13:28

If someone walked dog poo into my carpet I'd expect them to replace the carpet. Or I'd never forgive them and certainly would never let them in my house alone.

How could you not notice this?
