Well I totally messed that up

met DPs mum for the first time today. It could not have gone worse.

First, I walked dog shit onto her carpet.

Secondly - she was showing me around her bungalow and telling me she has only just moved in and it all needs decorating as the previous tenants had god awful taste. She used the hallway as an example. I agreed with her that it was awful, she then showed me her bathroom - I said it was even worse than the hallway. She’d just decorated the bathroom.

Thirdly, I knocked a glass off the kitchen side (trying to be helpful and take the mugs away), she was NOT happy at all, apparently she’d had those glasses for years.

Fourthly, I somehow damaged the flush on the toilet. I pressed it and it wouldn’t stop flushing. DP had to take the top off and mess with it.

To make me feel better, DP told me she didn’t like his ex “either” so not to worry.

Mortified and feel like calling time on the whole thing. I can never face her again.

It's the dog shit I'd find really difficult.

Scienceadvisory · 22/01/2023 01:28

How did you not know you had stood in dog shit? I hope you were the one to clean it up - if you got either your dp or her to do it then I can see her never wanting you back.

The bathroom thing though is, I'm sorry, hilarious. I really feel for you as that's the kind of foot in mouth comment I might make and its so embarrassing

Arabellla · 22/01/2023 01:36

I have never stepped in dog shit in my life. I find adults who step in it because they weren’t paying attention quite annoying. It’s just my view, the MIL may not be that bothered.

ijustneedanamefgs · 22/01/2023 01:54

😂😂😂 brilliant!! If this one doesn’t work out at least you have a good story for your future dates and in laws

I presume they mean in their shoes rather than as a “thanks for hosting” present

🤣🤣🤣

Never say never. There's always a first time...

LiteralSycamore · 22/01/2023 07:57

Flip it — did you like her?

garlictwist · 22/01/2023 08:04

Oh OP... Grin Thank you for giving me a laugh. Hopefully you will one day be in a place where you (and your future MIL?) can laugh too.

I could never forgive walking dog poo into my house. Shoes should be off at the door. Everything else would be forgivable though, hope it gets better with MIL

If it wasn't a shoes-off house (and this is an excellent reason for shoeless houses) then she might have caused offence by doing it. In the shoes on/off house debates on here, I've been told that my shoeless house is common, lower class, dirtier than a shoes-on house, unwelcoming and that socked feet are utterly offensive to the sight of any right-thinking person.

SoupAndSodaBread · 22/01/2023 08:09

😬 oh dear. Either you'll laugh together in years to come or you won't. Don't sweat it now. You didn't do anything malicious, just accidentally.

BlackenedDog · 22/01/2023 08:25

Ok so the dog shit thing, Dp took his shoes off in the hallway so I did the same … hallway had a cream carpet (so it wasn’t right through the house, just near the front door but still). I asked him to let me clean it but he insisted on doing it (whilst she stood with her hands on her hips watching 😬)

The bathroom was the worst bit … I’d agreed with her that the hallway was gross and the bathroom looked to have been done by the same “decorator” so I just blurted out “oh god it’s even worse in here isn’t it?” She said “I’ve just done this room!” So I replied (foot in mouth) “oh … it looks nice … “ (dickhead 🤦‍♀️) she just gave me a side eye and the tour ended right there.

The toilet would surely have happened to anyone who used it!

Anyway I sent him a message last night and he was quite short with me, supposed to be going for lunch today but he hasn’t replied so far

Oh god this is hilarious 🤣 OP how did your DP react? If I was the MIL id not be too bothered, if my son was happy that’s all that would matter to me.

crying laughing tho, this is sooo funny 😆

He just seemed really embarrassed throughout. We were meant to be staying for a couple of hours but he made excuses after an hour and we left. She seemed happy that we were leaving early 😂

I find it a bit odd she’s showing you around her house to be honest.

more fool him, it’s not like you did any of these things on purpose, I think it’s petty if he has an issue with you over this.

Jaxinthebox · 22/01/2023 08:30

they both sound pretty horrible. How long have you been together@BlackenedDog how old are you both?

Did you like her? She sounds a bit 'tricky'.

I think I might be reconsidering my relationship if he was 'off' with me after this and not supportive at all.

user1471462634 · 22/01/2023 08:31

Sorry but this is funny OP....tell us how lunch goes.....if it ever happens!!

Oh god I’m sorry it’s just so funny and he should see it that way, it really is like something out of a sitcom 😂😂

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/01/2023 08:34

It seems like they’re an uptight, judgemental family (related to plenty of people in here maybe?) so I don’t think you’d ever be able to impress. I’m 1000% more likely to break something if I’m nervous and on edge so I totally get that, and any good host brushes it aside even if it’s a priceless antique! You don’t make a guest feel like shit if you’re a decent human being.

SoupAndSodaBread · 22/01/2023 08:48

If he can't laugh about it even in private with you, I'd find that quite off-putting.

You didn't do anything on purpose. He doesn't need to make you feel worse about it

Calphurnia88 · 22/01/2023 08:51

This reminds me of the time I accidentally insulted my FIL by complimenting his costume for a fancy dress party (he immediately informed me that the party he was attending was not fancy dress).

It must have been about 5 years ago an I'm still cringing now!

Fuckstix · 22/01/2023 08:51

Fuckem. They sound fussy and tricky. Who gives a 'house tour' unless they've moved and someone actually wants to see the new place? Odd. The toilet would have happened to anyone. A decent host wouldn't have made you awkward about the glass, although you could maybe look for a replacement. She also sounds like a terrible decorator if the paint was where it shouldn't be so you weren't wrong about the bathroom! You'll laugh eventually

Xrays · 22/01/2023 08:54

Well if she can’t laugh about it and your dp is at stuck up as she is they aren’t nice people surely? I think it’s hilarious.

And people on here are so uptight - op took her shoes off at the door, she just happened to have some dog poo on them that got into the carpet. It was an accident. Hardly firing squad worthy.

lightand · 22/01/2023 08:54

You poor thing is all I have to say.
It is not a nice feeling to feel mortified.

Toottooot · 22/01/2023 08:57

How long have you and him been together?

GrasstrackGirl · 22/01/2023 09:01

I'm sorry but if I was the MIL I wouldn't find it funny, the OP fucked up and/or put her foot it it four times, I'd be thinking what the fuck if I was the boyfriend.
