Out of date Kyiv

I have a chicken Kyiv that I was planning to eat tonight for dinner, however, just noticed the date on it is 20th of January. Is this still okay to eat or should I bin?

I've just eaten some southern fried chicken and it was bbe yesterday it didn't smell or taste off, items don't just go off at midnight, my DH reckons you can give it 3 days because the company that makes it errs on the side of caution. TBF we've never been ill because of this

We are NOT calling chicken kiev ‘chicken Kyiv’. That is wankery supreme. Stop.

Ooooh. Check you, all edgy and contrary.

Now THAT'S wankery

So funny, I wrote on here a few weeks back about baked beans with chicken KIEV and spelt it KIEV and then people pulled me up for not spelling it KYIV. Can't win on Mumsnet honestly 😂

You ABU to start a post about chicken kievs twice in as many weeks

I frequently buy yellow stickered stuff and eat it the following day - it will be fine.

Have just eaten beef casserole (boeuf bourguignon on the box, but comments above about wankery noted) that I bought last weekend and forgot to check the date on - supposed to be eaten by 19th, but it was fine.

Againstmachine · 21/01/2023 14:18

Nope at stroke of midnight anything with that date becomes uneatable, and should be shot into space the danger is that great.

Or just use your common sense.

hadntbeen · 21/01/2023 14:20

@AnneTwackie why is that? Confused

Dunno

Maybe you like buns too? Especially lobbed about.

NatMoz · 21/01/2023 14:37

Why have they changed the name of chicken kievs?

They have nothing to do with Ukraine...i thought they were French, definitely not a ukrainian 'delicacy'.

I say this as a Ukrainian.

Againstmachine · 21/01/2023 14:40

sharperimage · 21/01/2023 14:30

she’s right

Thank you, it annoys me how much food waste there is due to people just throwing things away as soon as it gets past the date.

I'm not having a go OP buy it is that sniff if if it smells ok it more than likely is.

watcherintherye · 21/01/2023 14:42

It’ll be absolutely fine as long as it smells ok when you open it. You’ll know immediately if it’s off!

Not just the spelling has changed. I hope everyone is pronouncing Kyiv properly - k-yif, not key-ev!

maximist · 21/01/2023 14:53

It'll be fine. And given the current situation, using the Ukrainian spelling seems like the right thing to do to me.

midsomermurderess · 21/01/2023 14:55

Of course it’s fine to eat. It won’t have gone putrid on the stroke of midnight. I am finding ‘kyiv’ quite funny. Should we also now be eating Chicken Chennai and Mumbai mix too?

Wikipedia says they are Ukrainian/Russian but inspired by French cuisine. Either way it’s definitely named after the capital of Ukraine in English so makes sense it would change along with the shift in referring to the Capital of Ukraine as Kyiv in English.

Yes, it's a bit like calling "Bombay Mix", "Mumbai Mix" or "Peking Duck" "Beijing Duck", or "Burmese cats", "Myanmarese cats".

Is this chicken breaded thing with garlic in from the same pack?

Maybe OP had a lot of questions about them

TangledWebOfDeception · 21/01/2023 15:18

Of course you should eat it. It didn’t check the time at midnight and think oh shit, I’m rotten now.

yousmellnice · 21/01/2023 15:19

Maybe eat it now

I am surprised some of these names have stuck around honestly. The Bombay Sapphire Gin discussed above makes me cringe when I see it, especially with the branding they use. I found out the other day there is a company trading as the East India Company and trying to claim they have a connection to the original. They don’t, but why would you want to be associated with that history?

Is it just me or does it strike anyone else that all the pious shouts of 'virtue signalling' increasingly come across as peculiarly virtue-signalling?
