To be Disappointed with Crisps

I love crisps esp Tyrrells lightly sea salted. ( when they are great)
My issue is the quality and standard that changes between bags.
Maybe I'm crazy but I notice the difference between some batches? Compared to others.
I like them of course when you just can't stop eating them.
The texture needs to be lighter maybe and a thinner crisp overall.
AIBU to want sea salted crisps to be pretty much the same everytime I spend a decent amount of money on them.
Ps I generally only like ready salted crisps and occasionally cheese and onion.
Dislike all the other random ones and brands other.
I have had similar issues with Pringles varying in standard quality/ taste. over the years.

I'm with @YaWeeSkitter , Tayto cheese and onion crisps are the best crisps ever. They are impossible to find over here (my local Morrisons stocked them for a bit but then stopped), so I buy the by the case direct from Tayto. I'm not even sorry.

Coffeecreme · 21/01/2023 17:15

i dont like kettles or tyrells, i dont know what oil they use but i dont like them
i like pop corn crisps
and seasalt crisps, not the ridged ones,
i like sun bites

but i have lowered my crisp consumtion due to the price! outrageous

happysunr1se · 21/01/2023 17:22

The thinnest, lightest, crispiest crisps are Torres. The flavours are quite continental though; hot paprika, jamon, truffle, olive oil. No cheese and onion but the crunch is amazing!

JustAWeirdoWithNoName · 21/01/2023 17:34

Ooh I have to disagree - I love Tyrrell's BECAUSE they're so thick! Can't stand the cheap thin ones

Aquarius1234 · 21/01/2023 17:47

Ruffles from Spain were great and Lays years ago.

i like squares

MMBaranova · 21/01/2023 17:53

Tayto!

In our dafter moments we say things like ‘oh, we only have Craft Tayto’.

But the bees knees and ankles of Irish crisps are these. This is all I have left from the last trip.

I love crisps. But the taste has gone so downhill lately. I remember looking forward to Fish n Chips and Chicken n Chips coming back but they just tasted different and not the same. I agree with whoever said Squares are the only ones that still taste the same. I miss Burtons puffs. They were really nice.

Also disappointed with pretzels since they got rid of most of the salt on them Sad

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 21/01/2023 20:35

All crisp aficionados need to try Torres Truffle crisps. They’re incredible. But v pricey so it’s not an everyday thing. Also there’s a Fried egg crisp by el valle- delicious too.

I agree with OP though, bag to bag can be very different in taste and texture. I’ve noticed a few Walkers multipacks seem to get the odd deflated bag which will have gone stale. It drives me mad as it’s then no longer value for money.

Gotta love someone who has such in-depth knowledge of .... crisps. Any thoughts on Pipers?

Anjo2011 · 21/01/2023 21:07

@Murdoch1949 IMO Pipers are the don of crisps.

@Murdoch1949 the pipers range are delicious and consistent. Ocado do a fabulous £7 tub - lasts for ages - especially if you only want a crisp or two.

tyrells, Ttd are over seasoned, burnt, broken and chemical flavoured..

JenniferBooth · 21/01/2023 21:16

Lays? We have a new greengrocers/European food store recently opened in my town and they sell these

Iliveditwizbit · 21/01/2023 21:19

I like to buy the massive bags of crisps from my local Polish supermarket. Lays (which I think are walkers but… I swear Europeans get more crisps in their grab bags). I love dill flavour crisps, which are a thing in Eastern European shops.
It’s true that brannigans beef and mustard were the best ever.
Anyone remember the hype of Tudor chocolate crisps?

xsquared · 21/01/2023 21:31

Another vote for Pipers, especially jalapeño now that Kettle Chips discontinued that flavour.

They are very pricey though, so I only ever get them when they're on offer.

DuesToTheDirt · 21/01/2023 21:32

No one has mentioned Mackies crisps yet! Very potatoe-y. I like Mackies, Kettle Chips and Tyrrells, they're all different though. I pretty much stick to ready salted or salt and vinegar, or salt and pepper for Kettle Chips, though I've recently discovered Morrisons Jalapeno dirty fries, which are pretty good. I like McCoys too, but they don't do big bags (at least not at our local supermarket), which is what we mainly buy to share at the weekend.

Prices have shot up though, eh? Like everything!

little0miss0mac · 21/01/2023 21:34

Q1w2e3 · 20/01/2023 21:38

I agree. The best crisps ever are Morrisons finest range sea salt ones - always the same, always good.

Hah, I came here to say this! They are consistently brilliant.

JenniferBooth · 21/01/2023 21:40

Tesco Finest, Sainsburys Taste the Difference and Co Op all did Pigs In Blankets crisps for Christmas The best of the three was Co Op followed by Tesco Finest. The Sainsburys ones .....the bacon taste was too strong

Q1w2e3 · 21/01/2023 21:41

I consider myself a crisp expert 😂 Pipers are really good - the rosemary and thyme ones especially. Plus I feel fancy eating them!

PinkiOcelot · 21/01/2023 21:41

I like the ones from Aldi. Not sure of the name but they’re in a navy packet. I like the salt and vinegar ones but they never have them in. I dislike ready salted.

Ooh rosemary and thyme sounds fab. Never heard of Pipers though.

Lidl's deluxe salt and cracked pepper are the best crisps I've had in yonks. Crisp crack.
