To be Disappointed with Crisps

Aquarius1234 · 20/01/2023 20:10

I love crisps esp Tyrrells lightly sea salted. ( when they are great)
My issue is the quality and standard that changes between bags.
Maybe I'm crazy but I notice the difference between some batches? Compared to others.
I like them of course when you just can't stop eating them.
The texture needs to be lighter maybe and a thinner crisp overall.
AIBU to want sea salted crisps to be pretty much the same everytime I spend a decent amount of money on them.
Ps I generally only like ready salted crisps and occasionally cheese and onion.
Dislike all the other random ones and brands other.
I have had similar issues with Pringles varying in standard quality/ taste. over the years.

I think it’s something to do with different batches of potatoes will contain different amounts of starch.
I remember talking to some one in a chippy once and they said it makes them more difficult to fry

Q1w2e3 · 20/01/2023 21:38

I agree. The best crisps ever are Morrisons finest range sea salt ones - always the same, always good.

Flump9 · 20/01/2023 21:55

It's the war in Ukraine. Walkers ready salted are the same, the ingredients say sunflower/rapeseed oil in varying proportions.

LikeTearsInRain · 20/01/2023 22:07

Yeah I would imagine more recently it’s due to changes in the oil being used. Shortages of sunflower oil. Ukraine were one of the biggest sources of it.

ginislife · 21/01/2023 08:41

Try Just Crisps. Made in our village. Yummy and very moreish

Danikm151 · 21/01/2023 08:42

there’s been a change in the supply chain so different oil has to be used. It all depends on the potato crop as well.

PortiasBiscuit · 21/01/2023 08:47

You know they’re made with potatoes right, grown in the ground, a natural thing.
Having said that, crisps have universally got worse since they removed most of the salt.. along with baked beans and tinned soups.

Muffinmctuffin · 21/01/2023 09:01

I love crisps. I could live on them.

But it's becoming so much harder to find decent crisps - I used to love Walkers but they're dry now.

I still like Seabrook but I'm waiting for them to change too! McCoys are good too but hardly any in a packet and I have to be in the mood.

Never been keen on Tyrells and the ones that cafes serve as they think they're fancier than Walkers (can't remember the name now but it's marketed as a 'real crisp' type thing)

Muffinmctuffin · 21/01/2023 09:03

Kettle Chips! Can't believe I had to Google that. Not keen on them but everywhere seems to sell them. They have a slightly strange after taste after each bite.

Piggypiggyoinkoink · 21/01/2023 09:05

If you can get them, try Mackays or Findlays (found in Aldi). I too like ready salted and found Tyrrells greasy. Not a fan of Kettle for the same reason.

FlamingoSocks · 21/01/2023 09:08

I had some called simply roasted last week and they were delicious
My mum used to be obsessed with the varying quality of twiglets and used to open the packets in the supermarket and taste one, if it was OK then we would search for packets with the same batch number. If it was “burnt” then we would have to open another one and taste that….. Apparently this was totally not morally dubious as it was Twiglets fault for not maintaining quality control.

TheChosenTwo · 21/01/2023 09:11

Dh came home with a multipack of mccoys the other day, there were 9 crisps in the bag. 9 fucking crisps. Pathetic. That’s my crisp gripe.
Never been a fan really of kettle chips or the Tyrell’s ones, I prefer a crappy crisp but I want more than 9 in a bag.

TheChosenTwo · 21/01/2023 09:12

@FlamingoSocks that made me laugh reading about your mum opening all the twiglets for quality control purposes 😂

IHeartGeneHunt · 21/01/2023 09:14

Piper's crisps are amazing! I'm a crisp fanatic. I could eat them all day. Piper's never let me down.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this! Nobody else gets what I mean! I find the same with pringles (not "proper" crisps I know)

lemonybiscuits · 21/01/2023 09:17

Try Lidl own brand ready salted hand cooked crisps. They're like Tyrell's but much lighter and the quality is always the same.

Aquarius1234 · 21/01/2023 13:37

I used to like Kettles years ago. But they are over cooked now.
Burts are horrible. Could only eat a fee before throwing away.
M&S cooked crisps are rubbish also.
Co op sea salt are good but only sometimes...

Aquarius1234 · 21/01/2023 13:38

Will try Lidl sometime.
Anyone tried Waitrose own brand?

UthredofBattenberg · 21/01/2023 13:40

Co op sea salt and chardonnay vineager. They are really good. The vinegar is so sharp, but I really enjoy the pleasure/pain of eating them!

Phrenologistsfinger · 21/01/2023 13:41

I’ve never met a crisp I didn’t like!* I don’t notice too much starch variation but usually my issue is some brands being slightly overcooked (Kettle). I’ll still eat and enjoy them though!

*as long as they’re free of animal.

ReamsOfCheese · 21/01/2023 13:44

I'm a crisp aficionado and I'm fed up of getting halfway down a bag of Kettle, Tyrells or similar and finding the bottom half of the packet just drenched in grease so I have to throw it away. WTF is it and why can't they sort it out? M&S and Walkers never seem to have this issue despite being cheaper.

Aquarius1234 · 21/01/2023 13:47

Who enjoys a crisp sandwich/ baguette?

OP posts:
Aquarius1234 · 21/01/2023 13:48

I don't think it's fair to sell burnt crisps at £ 2 50 or whatever .

Mammyloveswine · 21/01/2023 14:12
