To be Disappointed with Crisps

Aquarius1234 · 20/01/2023 20:10

I love crisps esp Tyrrells lightly sea salted. ( when they are great)
My issue is the quality and standard that changes between bags.
Maybe I'm crazy but I notice the difference between some batches? Compared to others.
I like them of course when you just can't stop eating them.
The texture needs to be lighter maybe and a thinner crisp overall.
AIBU to want sea salted crisps to be pretty much the same everytime I spend a decent amount of money on them.
Ps I generally only like ready salted crisps and occasionally cheese and onion.
Dislike all the other random ones and brands other.
I have had similar issues with Pringles varying in standard quality/ taste. over the years.

Best crisps I’ve ever had are Brown Bag crisps and you can buy direct from them. Amazing.

TenTeo · 21/01/2023 14:25

Love crisps, my favourite it ready salted but over the last year I’ve noticed a decline. My main gripe is that a lot of them have a very slight fishy taste. A example is Aldis version of Tyrells. Must be the oil.

Muffinmctuffin · 21/01/2023 15:08

@Piggypiggyoinkoink I totally agree about the grease. I don't like Burts or Pipers either.

I miss the days of a decent bag of cheese and onion walkers!

JenniferBooth · 21/01/2023 15:26

Tesco Finest crisps They did loads of flavours for Christmas

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 21/01/2023 15:28

Brown bag crisps.
like crack.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 21/01/2023 15:31

We've gone off 'normal' crisps since they stopped using pure sunflower oil, crisps now taste oily and weird. For some reason though, Squares are still made with pure sunflower .... I get through a lot of those.

PAFMO · 21/01/2023 15:35

I didn't think they still made McCoys. Not seen them for ages.
Like pp I'll eat any. As long as they aren't plain or fish flavoured.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 21/01/2023 15:36

They all taste of rancid oil now.

moggerhanger · 21/01/2023 15:40

Two Farmers crisps are really nice but you have to buy direct. I also love Pipers. My main gripe on any crisp is when it doesn't have enough flavouring on it. If I'm buying Prawn Cocktail or whatever, that's what I want it to taste of. Not Ready Salted with a hint of something else!

DH likes Popchips The barbecue ones

Yes, loved the Chipotle chilli flavour in the red packet. Can't find them now

Oooh remember brannigans beef and mustard? Now they were a crisp!

God yes. They made your nose and eyes sting. Perfect washed down with a pint of Guinness, sitting on the stairs at Ye Olde White Harte in Hull Old Town.

Lunch of champions.

<nostalgic sigh>

Oblomov22 · 21/01/2023 15:56

Agreed. I adore crisps. There's no continuity, every packet is different. Drives me wild.

Was just going to say the same! They are delicious esp their smoky bacon flavour xx

chocolateismyjam · 21/01/2023 16:02

My favourite are Seabrooks Lattice crisps. The ordinary ones are Ok but the Lattice are delicious. I've only ever seen them in Aldi and Lidl and they come and go, so if I see them now I grab several bags.

I’ve tried to buy them in bulk. There’s fights over them in my house

SoupDragon · 21/01/2023 16:20

I'm a big fan of Sainsbury's Cheesy Balls. When I come across a good bag, I make a mental note of the Best Before Date and buy loads of that date when I am next in. Sad, yes but it hasn't failed me yet! I do also make a mental note of the shit batches and void those when finding my next good batch.

marrymeadam · 21/01/2023 16:21

My favourite ready salted are aldis own multi bag ones. I love it when they are a bit too thin so almost look see through, they are the tastiest. And please tell me im not the only one who saves the curled in half crisps for last because they taste the best?

Imtoooldforallthis · 21/01/2023 16:55

The Co Op Irresistible Roast Potato crisps were amazing bit were only out at Christmas if anyone knows anything similar, also M and S truffle crisps.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 21/01/2023 16:59

This thread has made me want crisps now.

Does anyone else remember Rishy's Cheese Crisps?

Anjo2011 · 21/01/2023 17:01

You need Pipers crisp in your life. They are a different league to Tyrell’s ( and I love them too) same price point. Sea salt are my fave.

YaWeeSkitter · 21/01/2023 17:03

Tayto Cheese and Onoin crisps are the crisps of champions. Made in a Castle so they must be good.
My gripe though is that they used to be a staple in Home bargains but have completely disappeared .

Coasterfan · 21/01/2023 17:05

I m not keen on posh crisps, I find them too hard. Salt snd vinegar walkers have always been my faves but now they have made them 45% less salt they just taste of nothing. Disappointing. We buy McCoy’s now but as a PP said the bags are too small. I also love pickled onion monster munch which have not been tampered with as yet!

FlamingoSocks · 21/01/2023 17:08

I have to say Pipers are almost a bit TOO salty for me
I love Brown Bag oak smoked chilli but they really repeat on me
Had some plantain crisps this week, they were nice, no grease

FlamingoSocks · 21/01/2023 17:08

Brannigans beef and mustard were the best tho. Exquisite pain.
