... the gift of schadenfreude that keeps on giving.

Don't know why I dislike her, I've only seen her speak for half a minute, but nonetheless I do

This is what prompted my post

Losing to the number 7 is the world is hardly a misfortune!

Who'd be a professional tennis player?

The British press has a lot to blame for putting such unrealistic expectations on such a young sports woman.

You’re unreasonable. She’s young. She’s plays tennis. Let her get on with it. Leave her alone.

butterpuffed · 18/01/2023 16:12

I have a mild dislike of someone and take mild pleasure in their misfortune - as I believe we all do.

Aah, when you mentioned Schadenfreude , it came across that you meant she takes pleasure in others' misfortunes so I misunderstood . You were talking about yourself . Nasty .

Have you never experienced schedenfreude Butterpuffed?

Chill your beans, it’s an observation not a criticism. She hasn’t been able to build off that grand slam victory and that’s a shame.

You say leave her alone but nothing that I have said has any impact on ER

She hasn’t been able to build off that grand slam victory and that’s a shame.

Only a handful of either male or female professional tennis players pull off a succession of grand slam victories.

it is not a failure to go out to number 7 in the world in the second round of a grand slam!

Inertiagurl · 18/01/2023 16:18

Yea, but she gets so much more hype than most tennis players. Nobody talking about a succession of grand slams, but continual early round exits aren’t too impressive

Wow.

Who creates the hype? The media!

Early round exits are entirely normal. Look at Murrays early career (and current one).

She had an astonishing run at the US Open when she won, that's what created the hype. The rest is unrealistic expectations.

Cronkywonkycrinkywinky · 18/01/2023 16:22

I'm finding all the talk about tennis a bit boring!

I hoped that this would be a thread about schadenfreude.

Well I guess at this point it remains to be seen if she’ll be a flash in the pan, or develop into a world-class tennis player

She is a world class tennis player! lol! Currently 77 in the world has been as high as 10.

You don't get to play a grand slam if you are not world class.

She's 20 and has struggled a lot with injury and simply being able to compete and practice properly since that US open win.

And you realise to even get into the tournaments she is playing in requires her to be one of the highest ranked players in the world, right?

SimonandGarfunkel · 18/01/2023 17:03

Good grief. I am in my mid 50s and am still amazed by the sheer nastiness of some people. Taking pleasure in the disappointments of others is never a good look.

I wonder if your schadenfreude brings you real joy. If it does then it's a pretty poor reflection on your character and I actually feel quite sorry for you.

thingumybob · 18/01/2023 17:04

Dotjones · 18/01/2023 15:38

YANBU. I don't particularly like her even though there's no particular reason. I think it's a British thing, we generally like to see people get to the top through hard work, she just appeared from nowhere and won a big tennis tournament.

I think a lot of the people who say "YABU!" are probably hypocrites to some degree in that most people meet or see others who they instinctively like or dislike. Like nobody needed to tell me bad things about Piers Morgan for me to have a negative opinion of him.

Tell me you don't have experience in competitive sport without telling me you don't have experience in competitive sport...

And no, people have to work quite hard to earn my dislike. I don't randomly dislike people. What a weird thing to do.

Pointless and horrible post. Do you think she cares.

Bunnycat101 · 18/01/2023 17:07

She’s achieved more than many of her peers ever will already but had a torrid year. I’m sure by the time she’s had a few years she’ll be a consistent top player. I don’t understand the hate and bullshit she has been subjected to- it all seems really unpleasant. Even if she only stays as a top 100 player with first round wins that is still making it as a professional in a way that most players never will get close to.

BiologicalWoman · 18/01/2023 17:17
  • she's not a girl as a lot of people have been calling her. She's a woman!
  • How is disliking somebody racist/misogynistic just because they happen to be a female with a mixed race background? I'm sure if OP had posted that she disliked Justin Bieber you'd all be agreeing (predominantly because he's a white male).
  • I think OP dislikes Emma because she seemed to be a one trick pony where she was thrust into the spotlight but hasn't quite matched her initial success. I don't dislike Emma, I think she's done amazingly at her age and I know great things will come her way. However I dislike a hell of a lot of footballers who fall into this category of "overhyped" and are put on some kind of pedestal like they should be worshipped when in reality they are overrated and overpaid fools.

Well she’s talented, hard working, young, successful and attractive and extremely wealthy. You’re experiencing jealousy OP, that’s all. The schadenfreude is because of your jealousy.

But you say you take pleasure in her misfortunes... so wouldn't it give you pleasure to know that it had had an impact on her? (I agree she probably doesn't know or care, I'm just questioning the logic of your last post.)

That's a really good point.

I wouldn't think of it as schadenfreude if I had been involved in causing the misfortune from which I took gratification.

That would be something else, though quite what word would be appropriate would depend on circumstances.

Of course this is mere semantics.

That's a big assumption luggage.

I am talented, successful and attractive with enough wealth to live a comfortable life.

Also I used to be young, and middle-age is better. And I've done just enough work to gratify me.

So no, nothing you mention about ER makes me jealous.

Probably from tabloids who've been gunning for her for ages,if you've barely watched her speak And can't even express why.

Surplus2requirements · 18/01/2023 17:41

When she won the US open a post went viral on SM about her supposedly refusing to be pictured with the Union flag despite many pictures showing her celebrating waving the flag.

That was obvious racism trying to twist a story to its agenda and easily debunked but I always wonder if it leaves a residue in some people's minds.

Dislike for no reason they can pinpoint for example.

As for not being liked by Brits because she didn't work for it...I have no words.

I don't read tabloids and I don't follow sport. I saw her on a TV show about business finance!

And having sat with this thread this afternoon I've pondered on what it was I disliked - and it was a sense (yes, a very quick reaction) that she is a highly entitled person.

That's the prince harry vibe that I mentioned earlier.
