... the gift of schadenfreude that keeps on giving.

Don't know why I dislike her, I've only seen her speak for half a minute, but nonetheless I do

YANBU. I don't particularly like her even though there's no particular reason. I think it's a British thing, we generally like to see people get to the top through hard work, she just appeared from nowhere and won a big tennis tournament.

I think a lot of the people who say "YABU!" are probably hypocrites to some degree in that most people meet or see others who they instinctively like or dislike. Like nobody needed to tell me bad things about Piers Morgan for me to have a negative opinion of him.

Do you not think a lot of hard work went into being good enough to win that tournament?? Really?

mbosnz · 18/01/2023 15:40

I'm thinking that it's okay that you dislike her. She's smart, she's strong, she's talented, and she's successful. I think she'll get by without you thinking she's all that. Well, she already has, hasn't she?

Cronkywonkycrinkywinky · 18/01/2023 15:41

DahliaMacNamara · 18/01/2023 15:38

If I did, I'd keep them to myself, rather than inviting other people to join in an attack I knew was irrational.

It's not really an attack though is it?

I don't imagine she's taking much time to read mumsnet so she's not harmed by it.

People love to criticise young girls in the public eye. It's really grim.

What?!?!

Are you insane? You don't just randomly win a grand slam. A huge amount of hard work has gone on to get her to that point.

If you knew anything about British tennis you I would have known that she was considered a rising star before that and was hitting with Andy Murray etc.

To even get into these big tournaments she had to win an awful lot of matches

This

OP you sound rather pathetic and jealous

mbosnz · 18/01/2023 15:45

Nobody likes everybody. Everybody has someone that doesn't like them, that doesn't find them to be their cup of tea. Sometimes that is irrational. I'd say it's better to be aware of your irrational antipathy to a person so as not to enable it to allow yourself to work in a toxic fashion - e.g. badmouthing them on social media, trolling them, that sort of shit.

AffIt · 18/01/2023 15:45

Tell me, OP, how many major tennis tournaments did you win before the age of 25?

Do you not think she’s had to work hard all of her teenage years to be as good as she is?? She will have spent most of her life training for this, many sacrifices and compromises will have been made along the way. She may have had some luck but you don’t get to win international tennis championships if you’ve not put in the hours.
I’m not a fan as such but I worry for her long term mental health when I read stuff like this. It’s jealousy and bitchiness at the simplest level.

What nonsense

read up on her- she was working for this her whole life

what you can’t stand is that she is her success at such a young age

Cronkywonkycrinkywinky · 18/01/2023 15:46

Movinghouseatlast · 18/01/2023 15:36

Christ, how nasty. She is a young girl. She is very good at tennis. You hate her???

No I don't hate her.

I have a mild dislike... I get a prince harry vibe from her...

You know fuck all about tennis. You don't get to play the qualifiers and go on to win the US open appearing from nowhere and without hard work.

Junior tennis players train so hard from a very young age.

She is admirable, beautiful and a woman.

No wonder she is so despised.

AutumnCrow · 18/01/2023 15:47

I can assure you that Emma Raducanu hasn’t killed 25 people.

It really isn't. Emma's British too. She trained hard for many years to win the US Open. It wasn't a fluke. And if she doesn't repeat it then she'll have brains, beauty and wealth to fall back on.

TenoringBehind · 18/01/2023 15:47

What a nasty thread to start.

Riu · 18/01/2023 15:48

I imagine you dislike her because she is more beautiful, better at tennis and more intelligent than you are. That is just a hunch though!

Absolutely. In fact it’s more an indication of how little British women’s tennis is covered in this country that she seems a surprise star when in fact she’s been up and coming for absolutely ages.

@Dotjones

she just appeared from nowhere and won a big tennis tournament

Utter, utter bollocks.

My sports are equestrianism and rugby rather than tennis, but I can guarantee you she will have been holding a racquet from practically before she should stand up and has already put thousands of hours into her career.

In equestrianism, there's a saying: 'rosettes are won at home - you just go to the competition to pick them up' - which essentially means that the success you see in public is the pay-off of 100s, if not 1000s of hours of training, preparation, scheduling, determination, investment etc.

Nobody just breenges into top-level sport.

GrasstrackGirl · 18/01/2023 15:50

I think you need to get a life OP.

shard5 · 18/01/2023 15:51

I imagine you've been reading the daily mail or some such other media outlet.
They build a person up only to dump on them the moment things don't seem to be going right.
She's not just a random player who won, she's been playing her whole life leading to that point.
I also imagine it sorely hurts some people to see a young British woman who doesn't fit the bill of blue eyed blonde become successful at anything
