To think that caring about what is fashionable is childish?

Or at least portrays a massive lack of confidence?

I can understand it in teenagers- you're still developing both physically and as a person and conformity is safety.

But for adults? Why would an adult choose clothes because they're "in" as opposed to whether or not you, personally suit them?
That they make you happy, comfortable or make you comfortable?

See plenty of threads on here asking exactly that.

Childish? Immature? Wtaf…..🙄

daisyjgrey · 18/01/2023 17:12

Out of interest, is there anything else you deem childish?

oohokay · 18/01/2023 17:12

Haven't RTFT but... Because it's fun!

If it's driven by negative emotion (fear of standing out, conformity, wanting to impress others), yes that is sad.

However, a large part of being human is also collective experiences :) Sometimes, you just (1) want to indulge your mental curiosity about a trend, or (2) have fun chatting with someone (especially family or friends) who's also tried it about how a certain trend feels/looks on you. I suppose you could always armchair-critic how others look in it but that's neither very fun nor nice!

In that sense it's no difference to checking out a currently airing popular TV which lots of people you know are watching (if OP now goes "I only watch indie Scandi noir"........), out of curiosity and so you have a common topic with others afterwards.

All modern fashion is in itself a trend anyway. If you really wanted to buck the trend, there's no actual reason apart from conformity that you have to wear 21st century style dressing everyday. Some historical garments are far more aesthetic, comfortable or practical.

Well as far as I could see on a recent trip into town all I could see was dull. Dull clothes, dull hair. No fun or creativity. I wish people were far MORE fashionable to be honest. Everyone was dressed in something dark and/or functional. They looked like they'd just thrown on any old thing that they'd found lying around on the bedroom floor. Your kind of person I guess @QuertyGirl

Fashion is the very antithesis of creative, is trying your best to follow a trend. It's imitation, not creation

Decorate your house to make yourself happy and comfortable. What does it matter what's fashionable?

Becuase it’s embarrassing for your kids if your decor is 30 years out of date. And out if interest your you were decorating it now, how would you make it deliberately unfashionable.

When certain styles have passed it becomes uncomfortable to live in a really dated environment. Decor is about ambience as well as comfort.

This is an odd take.

Forthelast · 18/01/2023 16:46

It's not always about women's clothes. And what if it was - you'd still care about what the woman in the sweatshop was wearing as she made your hot new incredibly priced skirt wouldn't you? Go you!

It absolutely mainly is. And where did I say I buy fast fashion anyway?

DeFacto · 18/01/2023 17:16

I think you misunderstand what fashion is @QuertyGirl.

I'd be interested to know what the 'fashionable sheep' look you're referring to consists of.

Care to elaborate?

This is an odd take.

I bought and decorated my house 20 years ago and my grown up kids seem very happy to have friends over 😂

It's literally what your thread is about.

malificent7 · 18/01/2023 17:18

I love fashion but I don't always enjoy what's fashionable. Cold shoulder tops were a thing....yuck!

I like to wear colour and ethnic hippy stuff which isn't "in" but suits me.

done4now · 18/01/2023 17:18

TabithaTittlemouse · 18/01/2023 16:50

”Fashion should be a form of escapism, and not a form of imprisonment” Alexander McQueen

Fashion is about expressing yourself.

I think you’ve got your sweet little Marks and Sparks knickers in a twist whilst trying to stand out.

@TabithaTittlemouse

Yes, anyone who thinks fashion isn't art hasn't been to a McQueen exhibit. Some of his designs were absolute masterpieces.

OP, so those who led the way in adopting trends that allowed women to wear clothes that didn't constrain them, i.e. trousers, jeans, no corsets, were childish?

TheKeatingFive · 18/01/2023 17:19

Fashion is the very antithesis of creative, is trying your best to follow a trend. It's imitation, not creation

If you think that, you aren't understanding it.

Not that I myself am fashionable. But for my friends who are, it's very creative. They're playing with boundaries, putting their own spin on current trends, experimenting. It's not slavishly copying a model in a shop.

QuertyGirl · 18/01/2023 17:19

@DeFacto

Nope, it's about following fashion as opposed to wearing whatever you want.

The "fashionable look" changes at least twice a year. What it consists of, is besides the point.

Imitation of what? Someone creative?

oohokay · 18/01/2023 17:22

@malificent7 on a random note, I hate the idea of cold shoulder tops too (I associate them with a kind of person where I grew up) but I look really good in them. In fact I look best in lots of things I hate, sadly. And look like a potato sack in styles I love

Why have the trends and boundaries?

@QuertyGirl there is no point conversing with you further as you have literally no understanding of what fashion even is.

Your definition of fashion, in the context of the clothing industry, is wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️

DeFacto · 18/01/2023 17:23

There is no one 'fashion' anyway @QuertyGirl, different fashion houses have their own particular aesthetic. You're going to get a very different 'fashionable' look from The Row compared to Balmain or Chloè.

Wanderingowl · 18/01/2023 17:28

Chubbernut · 18/01/2023 13:13

YABU

It’s no more “childish” than many of the things I’m sure you care about. Consider running, that’s childish, trying to go as fast as possible for as long as possible? Childish. Travelling, just going to see new things even though you could just do the things you already know you like? Childish. What about pet ownership? Playing with something that doesn’t even speak or communicate properly and makes a mess? Childish.

Fashion is actually really interesting and complex. It’s part art and part science. There are interesting elements controlled by biology and human nature that are permanent. Then there are other parts connected to society and culture that change frequently and recycle. There are certain styles and patterns and colours that suit different people and manipulate so much of how we look and express ourselves. I say this as someone who know almost nothing of high fashion and lives my life in leggings. I don’t have to personally enjoy it to recognise the importance and impact of it.

You know what’s childish? Insulting things just because you don’t personally enjoy them.

Yeah, sure, but...... How can you show that you're not like other girls if you don't say fashion is childish?

Exactly. And there are literally hundreds of fashion trends, ranging from cottagecore to gorpcore.

I understand the point that OP is trying to make (not saying I agree with it), but she's massively misunderstanding the fashion industry.

Take a look at Vikor and Rolf. High fashion is about creativity, science and aesthetics. In fact DT textiles is a STEM subject.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/01/2023 17:38

And Dior, his work is a masterpiece of engineering.

QuertyGirl · 18/01/2023 17:47

Of course high fashion is art.

Following it simply because everyone else is, is not.
