To think that caring about what is fashionable is childish?

Or at least portrays a massive lack of confidence?

I can understand it in teenagers- you're still developing both physically and as a person and conformity is safety.

But for adults? Why would an adult choose clothes because they're "in" as opposed to whether or not you, personally suit them?
That they make you happy, comfortable or make you comfortable?

See plenty of threads on here asking exactly that.

@Calphurnia88

I'd wonder why they can't choose for themselves. Which is what I'm getting at

”Fashion should be a form of escapism, and not a form of imprisonment” Alexander McQueen

Fashion is about expressing yourself.

I think you’ve got your sweet little Marks and Sparks knickers in a twist whilst trying to stand out.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Fashion students are not following fashion though, they seek to set it. That's something else entirely.

It's those see to imitate it that I don't understand

Maybe not everyone is brave enough to dress like a fashion student?

As l said before it’s about anthropology. People stick to their tribes. So if someone is into Kardashians they dress like them. If someone’s into cottagecore they dress like that.

l could pretty much conclude status/income/age/interests based on what people wear. Even those who reject it. It’s called decoding or symbiotics

QuertyGirl · 18/01/2023 16:51

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/01/2023 16:46

I wouldn’t do mine for my children either. But if l was redoing my kitchen, it would follow trends because THAT IS ALL YOU CAN BUY, unless you want some bespoke out of date kitchen.

But if it was 40 years old, l think the average teen might be a bit nervous about bringing their friends there. Not an older teen who thinks it is retro, but a younger teen.

Younger teens care about your kitchen cabinets?

No, not about the cabinets. But about colour and styling.

QuertyGirl · 18/01/2023 16:53

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Why should it require bravery to choose your own clothes (or kitchen cabinets)?

This is sounding very much like a prison to me

Oh dear. The fixation on kitchen cabinets (?) is confirmation that anyone waiting for OP to engage with the thoughtful responses left this afternoon is going to be disappointed.

I said bravery to dress like a fashion student. Not everyone has the self confidence to do that.

Do what you like with your kitchen.

But you say this as if there is only one way to dress fashionably.

There are literally hundreds of trends.

pocketvenuss · 18/01/2023 16:55

People who think they don't follow fashion are deluded most of the time. Everyone is influenced by fashion whether they like to admit it or not. Usually I find people who scoff at fashion are actually wearing clothes that were in fashion a few years ago. They are just always following things late. Once they are no longer in fashion. They are late adopters and because those styles are now on their way out those people saying they don't follow fashion mistakenly thinking that those clothes are 'classic' where in actual fact, they are just out of fashion. Even classic clothes change with fashion. The classic jeans, blazer etc is not the same cut jeans or blazer as it was in the 80s or 70s. The classic sort of dress a woman would have worn in the 1960s or 1990s are different from each other and of that of today. A man's classic suit from 30 years ago would look serious dated today.

Yes absolutely.

Greenfairydust · 18/01/2023 16:58

Seriously, why do you care?

If people want to follow fashion, find it fun and it makes them feel good about themselves ,so what?

Fashion is also an industry that employs thousands of people and bring an awful lot of money in tax revenue. Hardly ''childish'' when you think about its reach and power as an industry.

I prefer having my own style rather than following whatever is in fashion every year, but I certainly would not look down in anyone who does.

I think you come across as the one who is immature and rather judgemental.

I suggest you educate yourself and learn more about fashion designers across the ages. They played a key part in cultural trends and societal changes for example by creating clothing that freed women from the limitations of having to wear tight corsets, crinolines and elaborate dresses and heavy hats.

Fashion is just another way for people of expressing themselves in the end and there is nothing wrong or childish about that.

Even women who are politicians or run high profile businesses will be mindful of their appearance and be influenced by fashion.

The more I think about it, the sillier your post looks...

Ffs, have you ANY understanding of how people operate? Some people like to be ‘out there’ and some like to hide amongst the masses.

What a facile comment.

Although she's reluctant to share how she dresses, I strongly suspect this describes OP.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/01/2023 17:00

Or the late adopters wear lots of technical walking clothes.

QueefQueen80s · 18/01/2023 17:00

Not childish but I do wish more women didn't go for the clone look and wore what their personality is. I've never followed trends, I wear whatever the hell I want and don't GAF if it's not in fashion.
When I see a wall of women in the same clothes, same haircut/colour etc.. It's just sad.

I'd wonder why they can't choose for themselves. Which is what I'm getting at

But they are choosing for themselves, from what is easily available and affordable to them. Not everybody is surrounded by choice, or has the time or the inclination (or the money) for poring over resale sites and taking chances on things they can't try on or return.

Are you saying that people who buy and wear clothes which are freely available in the majority of shops are doing so because they 'can't' think for themselves? How unbelievably patronising.

5128gap · 18/01/2023 17:02

Asking permission to wear white trainers/skinny jeans or whatever is going too far imo, because that means the tail is wagging the dog. Clothes are our servants not our masters.
However, of course 'everyone likes the same thing' as the things we're supposed to like are presented to us in a way that makes them attractive and aspirational. New clothing styles are shown on models that make the whole image look lovely, home decor trends are showcased in beautiful properties, so there's a strong association built between the trend and asthetic pleasure.
We also become accustomed to seeing a look and it's familiarity becomes attractive.
This happened to me with beards. I used to loathe them, but now, everywhere I turn I see them on young good looking men so have got used to them, and associate them with attractiveness. Just as I did perms and mustaches on men in the 80s, which now look awful.
I don't think there are many people completely immune to this whose taste exists in a vacuum, however much they might like to think so.

QuertyGirl · 18/01/2023 17:02

I wear whatever I want and is practical for what I'm doing that day.

I like fashion. It's a good way of feeling that you still look good as you grow older. I don't have the money, unfortunately, to constantly buy fashionable clothes. However, I always try to at least have a nice t shirt or accessory that's current. I'm pregnant now, so I'm just wearing leggings, but when I have my baby, I'll go back to making an effort!

LuckyStarz · 18/01/2023 17:09

Well as far as I could see on a recent trip into town all I could see was dull. Dull clothes, dull hair. No fun or creativity. I wish people were far MORE fashionable to be honest. Everyone was dressed in something dark and/or functional. They looked like they'd just thrown on any old thing that they'd found lying around on the bedroom floor. Your kind of person I guess @QuertyGirl
