To think that caring about what is fashionable is childish?

Or at least portrays a massive lack of confidence?

I can understand it in teenagers- you're still developing both physically and as a person and conformity is safety.

But for adults? Why would an adult choose clothes because they're "in" as opposed to whether or not you, personally suit them?
That they make you happy, comfortable or make you comfortable?

See plenty of threads on here asking exactly that.

Because it's fun?

Motelschmotel · 18/01/2023 13:10

You’re going to get blasted for that opinion, but I totally agree with you.

That said, I think British women actually have a distinguished sense of fashion, that you can spot at twenty paces. There’s something actually really appealing about women making fashion trends suit them, rather than the other way round. For example, skinny jeans. Originally intended to be worn by super slender and toned women, to flatter that body type, they began being worn by anyone with any type of figure. Not always flattering. But, British women totally democratized the trend. Muffin tips became a thing and now they’re so ubiquitous as to have gone in and out of fashion multiple times. It’s a rare woman who can wear them without revealing unsightly lumps and bumps but I love it when I come back to the UK. It’s that punk rock, flipping the bird thing. It’s totally cool, uniquely so. So, yes and no.

JackieDaws · 18/01/2023 13:11

Because it's fun, humans have always loved fashion, and IMO, I want to look like I care about myself. No sensible blue wash boot cut jeans, sweatshirt and pageboy bob here. I see this look so much around my local area. "Jonty darling, do as mummy asks please".

Lialou · 18/01/2023 13:11

But surely they also "like" and "suit" them, as well as being fashionable?

nutherwun · 18/01/2023 13:12

I agree @QuertyGirl it's immature.

Captnip500 · 18/01/2023 13:12

It’s harmless though isn’t it? Its not for me but some people just enjoy keeping up
with what’s on fashion.

It’s no more “childish” than many of the things I’m sure you care about. Consider running, that’s childish, trying to go as fast as possible for as long as possible? Childish. Travelling, just going to see new things even though you could just do the things you already know you like? Childish. What about pet ownership? Playing with something that doesn’t even speak or communicate properly and makes a mess? Childish.

Fashion is actually really interesting and complex. It’s part art and part science. There are interesting elements controlled by biology and human nature that are permanent. Then there are other parts connected to society and culture that change frequently and recycle. There are certain styles and patterns and colours that suit different people and manipulate so much of how we look and express ourselves. I say this as someone who know almost nothing of high fashion and lives my life in leggings. I don’t have to personally enjoy it to recognise the importance and impact of it.

You know what’s childish? Insulting things just because you don’t personally enjoy them.

Spirini · 18/01/2023 13:14

@Chubbernut 👏👏👏👏👏

BriteSparke · 18/01/2023 13:14

I think people who are interested in things that don't interest me are wrong. And silly. And childish 😛

100%. Giving something a mean label just because it’s not your thing is a bit… childish.

Spirini · 18/01/2023 13:15

@QuertyGirl that's quite a narrow view of people. Fashion is art.

nutherwun · 18/01/2023 13:17

Keeps the fast fashion industry going.

IglesiasPiggl · 18/01/2023 13:17

Some people find it useful as a steer as there is so much choice out there. I think there is a difference between buying something purely because it's fashionable, and looking for something that's both up to date and suits you. Lots of people like to update a classic look with fashionable accessories too. I prefer not to look too dated - being more up to date can be an outward signal that you are participating in current events (not essential but lots of people like to give this vibe).

Spiderboy · 18/01/2023 13:17

Judging other peoples interests is surely far more immature? Keeping up with fashion is just a hobby, something to follow and have an interest in.

Fullsomefrenchie · 18/01/2023 13:17

I’ve seen plenty of folks in unfashionable clothes that don’t suit them, I assume the wearer thinks otherwise , so I don’t think people wearing clothes that doesn’t suit them is remotely unique to followers of fashion. Also what suits a person is about personal taste.

for me, I prefer to look current as opposed to fashionable or a throw back to the eighties.

AllTheWeatherAllTheTime · 18/01/2023 13:17

As above, if you're not interested in fashion, you can wear whatever you want. No one's going to pop round and force clothing onto you. It is childish to criticise something just because you personally don't understand it.

For the rest of us though, it's enjoyable to see new ideas and change things up every now and again. It might surprise you to notice people take multiple different criteria into account in their decision making, like size, fit, comfort and also style, all at the same time. Imagine such a thing.

zinch · 18/01/2023 13:18

I sort of see where you're coming from. I used to be way more trend-obsessed when I was younger. Now I'm a 35 yr old breastfeeding mum I don't care as much, I stick to the colour palette I know and love. I still wouldn't want to wear anything deeply uncool though. That's why I just keep it very simple.

I don't think I particularly give a shit what brand trainers are "in" at the moment but I'll always like a designer handbag 🤷‍♀️

Iliveditwizbit · 18/01/2023 13:18

Well because if you turn up to a job interview for a fashion pr agency dressed as Roy Cropper you’re not likely to come away with the job?
Professional lives require professional clothes.
Pj’s are comfy and practical. But if you wear them on the school run people judge. That’s life 🤷‍♀️

QuertyGirl · 18/01/2023 13:19

What's fun about wanting to look like everyone else?

nutherwun · 18/01/2023 13:20

Classy French women don't follow fashion.

That's not fashion, that's cultural expectations. It's perfectly possible to turn out smartly without being fashionable

Choconut · 18/01/2023 13:22

It just depends what you're into I guess, I mean I'm assuming you wouldn't call a fashion designer childish so why is someone that follows and enjoys fashion childish?

Personally I'm not into fashion at all, I like to travel - far more grown up 😋

Namechanger965 · 18/01/2023 13:22

Caring about what’s fashionable for yourself and your own clothing isn’t childish. It’s just an interest. It’s like gaming, some people enjoy it but lots of people see it as a childish hobby.

Judging other people for not being fashionable is childish however, as I’d associate that behaviour with teenagers. Although judging other people based on their interests is also what I’d expect of a teenager.

Will you please tell all this to all the 'intellectual' middle class people who will drone on endlessly about other art forms but get super sneery about fashion.

still annoyed about anti fashion snobs for the Christmas period

I also think some people are frightened of fashion and therefore reject it. There's that mean girls element that has never been shaken off.
