AIBU to ask?

My personal experience someone who I went to Uni with who joined the Met. Thank god he got found out.

He bullied me at Uni, picked on me. Attacked me once. I was horrified when he joined the Met. He got kicked out for throwing someone down some stairs and then kicking them.

He moved abroad and now works in the US. Still in enforcement. Honestly a totally evil person. He made one year of my Uni life a misery.

he was racist and a misogynist. Total God Complex too.

Why are people like this allowed into the force then tolerated?

Yes, my sister and actually through her I know quite a lot about the others on her shift and in her force and the majority are decent human beings. They are pretty stressed out human beings though. In her time as a cop my sis has been injured plenty, been spat on, cleaned up an ocean of vomit, scraped some poor guy's brains off the road and then had to go tell his wife how he died, comforted abused women and kids, comforted victims of rape, had someone a criminal she arrested try to kill themselves in their cell on Xmas eve (she was devastated and it ruined her Xmas). Oh and there was the dude who nearly ran her over and gave her PTSD. For this she get's paid my original starting salary from 20 years ago. Her real terms pay has decreased every year over the last few years.

I don't think anyone who doesn't spend some considerable time with a cop has ANY idea of the sort of stuff they go through day in day out. Doesn't excuse the bad apples. There are shitty people in all walks of life and the police force is no different. However the majority are normal people who endure an enormous amount of stress, violence and sorrow in their daily work. We laud the poor nurses who have to work shifts and endure work hardship and misery and we abuse the police officers who do the same. I've never understood this hatred of the police. Most of them just want to help you and stop the bad guys. They are hampered by paperwork, rules and are chronically short staffed and they stick on their stab proof every night and go run down dark alley-ways after violent criminals, risking their lives to keep you safe. They don't do it for shits and giggles and they sure as hell don't do it for the money!

I don’t think anyone believes it’s a few bad apples with 1000 reports of poor behaviour (at best) being investigated. More like crate after crate!

TizerorFizz · 19/01/2023 16:32

And just because some aspects of a job are very unpleasant, it doesn’t excuse illegal behaviour where the police use their status to abuse women.

I know some decent police officers. And one of my daughters is married to one.
Blanket condemnation of the police is a silly attitude which only alters when one of them dies.for us when tackling armed robbers or terrorists etc By all means fuss about bad officers but don't miscall the whole force.

When I worked in drug intervention and offender management I was privileged to have some great police colleagues.

I have close friends who are retired police officers and are decent people.

Of course there are police officers who aren't decent people and that is worrying.

I have known a number of decent police officers in three separate forces. One of my ex-girlfriends was a Met PC.

OMG12 · 05/06/2023 06:33

Yes, lots, inc my husband. In fact I haven’t met one that isn’t decent tbh. I honestly don’t know how they do their job. I’m sure there are a few bad eggs- like everywhere else. But I think the overwhelming majority are absolutely incredible. I’d love some of the police haters to do a single shift as with the police. I think the fact many do it on a voluntary basis is even more amazing!

Met lots of doctors/nurses/other professionals who are complete assholes but you’re not allowed to say anything about those.

Do you feel the same about NHS workers, eg 6 NHS workers are reported each week for sexually harassing patients and colleagues, ie hundreds each year, not to mention assaults etc.

Valeriekat · 05/06/2023 06:51

Yes but he retired about 20 years ago. One of the nicest, bravest and most decent people I have ever met.
The other one worked for Gwent Police.

I know one very good female officer locally. Two of my friends daughters are joining post grad which I think is a very good sign for the force. I've come across a really good local male officer who reacted to my concerns about an adult male who was extremely inappropriate with my daughter and her friend (13 & 14). Who in the course of conservation said he was teacher abroad. The male officer actually said he had a cold chill down his spine when I told him that are really tried to track the guy down.

Two (male) Police Officers live in my village. One is lovely and the other is an absolute tool.

I wonder why this thread has been resurrected after five months.

Yeah, I do know a decent police officer. I also know two arseholes that backed up their bouncer buddies and managed to get a friend of mine convicted for assault. What had my friend actually done? He had given them cheek (he's a bit of a comedian and also highly intelligent), that was overheard by quite a few people, who laughed. A lot.

One of the bouncers told him to leave. He did. He was then followed (when my friend realised this he ran - but he's not the fittest). The bouncer then proceeded to assault him, then accused him of assault - and won the case because of the evidence of two police that weren't there at the time of the assault.

Fandabedodgy · 05/06/2023 08:50

I know 2. Both are lovely. One man. One woman.
