I am exactly as my username says, so I just need some reassurance that I’m worrying for no reason at all and it will be fine!

I had to buy a wire for my i phone charger today, and also a plug- I told them it was an iphone 13 and showed it to them, and they said it needed a usb c cable. I said I thought it was the B but they said that only refers to the fitting for the plug, and the plug they were selling me was for a C. So they went and got me the C and I bought it and I went home and surprise surprise it doesn’t fit my phone.

I’m kicking myself now because my guy instinct said he was wrong but he was so insistent and was talking over me each time I was trying to explain it- it’s a big high street brand so I stupidly trusted him and bought that one.

obviously I’ll take it back tomorrow but I’m just a bit worried they deny it or say they can’t swap it because I’ve opened the packaging and unwrapped the wire (I had to to try and fit it in my phone) but I’ve put it back in the box and wrapped it as best as I could, it was £35 so I’m just a bit worried they won’t swap it or take it back because obviously it’s a lot of money. Like I said in my username, I’m a stresser and have bad anxiety so I’m a bit worried about it tonight!

has anyone got any knowledge about this?! Absolutely kicking myself!

Apple laptops use MagSafe chargers, not usb-c!

Not all of them.
If this thread has highlighted anything, it's the Apple products have over time used many different chargers.
Just because YOUR iPhone or laptop uses charger xxx, it doesn't mean ALL of them do!

I have 3 MacBooks and each has a different port for charging - PITA.

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro and it has a USB-C charger. It only has two USB-C and one audio jack on the whole bloody thing - I have to use an adapter if I want to do something quaint and retro, like save to a flash drive Hmm DH has an MacBook Air and his is a MagSafe.

Back to the topic of the iPhone, I have a 13 Mini and it came with a USB-C to Lightning cable (handy for charging via my extra MacBook port! Grin). The phone itself needs a Lightning cable, as others have said.

Jeez, this thread is like a comedy sketch!
@stresser Next time, don't rely on a shop person's advice, look up what you need in the Apple store and make sure you know exactly what you need and what it's called. If you talk about the "plug" and "wire" a pompous idiot in a shop will feel able to walk all over you.

”Wire” and “plug” are pretty clear. It’s not like she asked for a “snakey thingy” and a “blocky thing” 😀

MotherOfHouseplants · 17/01/2023 08:59

£35?! Was it the Apple branded one?

Yes. Op put up a photo of the product she bought.

Not for a while now - 2015-16 ish IIRC.

This is my 2020 MacBook Air with two USB C ports and no MagSafe.

amusedbush · 17/01/2023 09:07

Sorry, I worded the end of my post badly. I meant to say "the phone itself has a Lightning port"!

MrsCarson · 17/01/2023 09:07

I'd order a plug online at Apple, £19 and they ship for free. Then go to Poundland and get the cable for £1.50 At least in Poundland you can see the ends and buy the right one, it says on the packets which iPhones they fit.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 17/01/2023 09:07

I don’t think you’ll have an issue with Tesco but I’d go straight in and say clearly that you were sold this charger for your iPhone 12 by a staff member (date/time) but when opened the box it was clearly incorrect and you need the lightning adapter.

FYI there are specific consumer rights when you’ve been sold something to meet your requirements but no need to go,into that. Just be calm and clear you are looking for an exchange (or refund if they don’t have the right one).

This thread is really quite special.

OP I hope you now know what you need (lightning at the phone end and whatever fits the plug at the other end, you have a usb-c plug there so it would be lightning to usb-c). Fwiw I wouldn’t bother with the cheapo wires either, my husband buys them and they are crap. Some of the more expensive braided ones have been OK for us but don’t tend to come in the 2m length.

I can understand your stress re. having opened it but Tesco are normally fairly reasonable; if unsure I would call customer services before going along. Good luck!

OneTC · 17/01/2023 09:14

It's just the wire they need to change, 100% they'll do it

I don't know what you want me to say to that. I believe you, but you were the one who said - quite emphatically - that MacBooks don't use USB-C chargers. I (and another poster) just illustrated that some do.

£35 for a phone charger!
Does it bring you breakfast in bed as well?

Quite, you can pick up a three pack of varying length cables off Amazon for £7.99! I think you need your head examined if you opt to buy 'authentic' Apple accessories from the high street.

Why would you spend more money on two additional items when you can just go back to Tesco to get them to replace the mis-sold cable?

OneTC · 17/01/2023 09:19

I buy cables by AINOPE and Anker and don't really bother with anything else because they're all useless and fall apart so quickly. Buying the cheap ones is a false economy.

It's REALLY confusing. You must have a 14" or 16".

2022 MacBook Air, 14" and 16" 2021 MacBook Pro use MagSafe 3 (not to be confused with MagSafe 1 or MagSafe 2). The 13" MacBook Pro does not.

All MacBook Pros and Airs have USB C or Thunderbolt (which can also take USB C cables) as either their only OR an additional port. You could charge your MacBook Pro with USB C in a pinch but it would be slower than the MagSafe 3.

It will be neither! They're up to MagSafe 3 now Grin

BunchHarman · 17/01/2023 09:24

iPhone 12s come with a USB-C (to go into the plug) to Lightning charger (to go into the phone).

This thread has been irksome.

if Tesco don’t swap, although I think they will, lease buy genuine products

Bore off. Apple are price gouging.

Ha ha! Touche!

Bloody things. We have a tray of what DS1 calls cable salad. Those rubber cable marker things really help.

While we're here, does anyone know where I put my iPhone charger? It was in my hand when I went upstairs yesterday evening, and I cannot find the fucker now!

My Magsafe3 lead is woven which is far more durable that the plastic covered ones. I coils up more nicely, too.

There are plenty of good-quality aftermarket chargers and cables which are better than the cheapies but cheaper than Apple. Belkin and Anker are reputable and good quality.
