Does anyone else get in PHs/bed about 6pm?

Obviously this will be hard if you work later or have kids etc.

I work from home most days. I finish at 5. Have a bath, get in PJs and then chill in bed watching TV/ reading/ relaxing all evening. This is during the darker months really (November - March). I don't know what else to do with myself and just feel tired tbh. I go to sleep at around 9pm.

In the summer it tends to be a bit later as it feels there is more of the evening, plus I have more energy. I may go for a walk after work for example.

Is it just me who does this? I still tend to be tired in the morning though, I need more sleep during the winter than summer. In summer I wake at 5:30 no issue, in the winter it's more 7:45.

RampantIvy · 16/01/2023 06:46

No. I don't understand the MN obsession with PJs. I bought some last year, but find them too hot. I prefer to wear a giant T-shirt nightie in bed.

If I don't get dressed I feel lazy and unmotivated and as if the day hasn't started.

I like to read in bed, but I don't go to bed in the early evening unless I am ill.

housemaus · 16/01/2023 09:31

Have you checked you've not got a vitamin deficiency of some kind, OP?

That level of tiredness I'd say was at the slightly abnormal end of the range - maybe nothing, but worth checking out. Low iron and low vitamin D could both cause you to be so tired. I'm guessing from your OP that you don't have kids, so I think after a day of WFH you shouldn't need to sleep so early - if it's not a problem for you then that's fine, of course.

I definitely need more sleep in winter than summer and I put my PJs/comfy clothes on as soon as I'm home regardless of time of day (and if I'm WFH I don't even get 'properly' dressed, just joggers and a jumper haha).

FrenchandSaunders · 16/01/2023 09:34

I wfh and I'm in trackies or leggings anyway so no point in putting PJs on. I try and get out to a class at the beginning of the week as I feel I'm too stationary without my commute.

I'm at a loss here OP.

If you get up at 7.45am in the Winter and go to bed at 6pm having finished work at 5pm, where on earth do you find the time for housework and exercise?

My mental health would be shot to shit if I spent all day sitting in the house working, and then all evening lying in bed.

This. I'd be severely depressed.
I'd also have severe back pain.
Those of you who read and watch TV in bed - are you sitting up? Isn't that really uncomfortable after more than 20 minutes or so?

SparklyLeprechaun · 16/01/2023 10:21

When do you get to do anything? Housework, exercising, shopping, going out?

mycatsanutter · 16/01/2023 10:26

Nope , I have too much to do and am often popping out . I go to bed around 11.30 could not go to bed before 8

Sukisal · 16/01/2023 10:31

No, absolutely not. This sounds nuts to me!

what about seeing friends, family? Going to hobbies, clubs? Exercise?

mydogisthebest · 16/01/2023 10:55

Don't even own pyjamas (sleep naked).

We don't eat until 7.30 at the earliest. I go to bed about 11.30pm and then read until midnight. I usually get up around 7.30am.

Don't like tv's in bedrooms and we have never had one in our bedroom. We have a comfy sofa to sit and watch tv, read, surf the internet or whatever. I don't find sitting in bed particulary comfortable

KnickerlessParsons · 16/01/2023 10:58

I thought this was about getting into Prince Harry's bed!

Yerroblemom1923 · 16/01/2023 11:02

No. I think do this when I come home from work as have food to prepare for family, household chores eg ironing, dishes, hoovering, clubs to take dd to and I like to have a break between work and bed or it would feel like all I do is work/sleep/work/sleep which is no life!
Do you not have any friends in RL or a partner that you can do stuff with? I'm guessing being child free ensures your house is always tidy and so no need for constantly keeping on top of stuff and I'm guessing you can also do that during the day while you're working.

Yes I do
but I thought it might be a sign of depression so I’ve just started on some antidepressants.
i don’t know anyone else who does this ,so thought it was just me

I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression, and one of the things I was concerned about was the fact that my favourite thing was spending time at home, and lots of time snuggled in bed reading/gaming/watching TV.

Now that I'm more than two years into my treatment, I realise that that's just who/what I am.

I still enjoy doing exactly those things, but without the low moods and crippling anxiety.

Same here. I do struggle with depression, mainly because I have chronic fatigue and it can make life such a battle. But even if I didn't, I just find bed such a welcoming and cosy place to chill out and read/write/watch TV that I think I would naturally gravitate towards bed anyway. Especially as I don't find our living room particularly cosy.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/01/2023 11:10

I always change into “house clothes” about 6pm (leggings, cosy jumper type stuff) and cleanse my face and do skincare. To me it’s just taking the working day off and switching to being at home. I’m off my feet with an injury at the moment but hopefully come spring I will be able to go for a run after work too.

I can’t even imagine going to bed then though. We eat dinner about 7, then there’s bits and pieces to do round the house, getting stuff ready for the next day, I like to read and watch TV, then usually bed around 11.30. I change into a nightie then. We don’t have a TV in the bedroom so bed is for sleeping.

wowwhydoesmybackhurtwaaah · 16/01/2023 11:15

Getting in bed at 6p everynight? Don't you have, y'know....a life?

In the evenings I go to my team sport training, or an exercise class, or the cinema or a swim or play board games with my kids or help them with homework., watch a film and knit, clean or bake, or read...

How do youj even eat? Do you make dinner at 4pm? I wouldn't even have started cooking by 6pm, let alone eaten.

I don't understand how yuo have any life at all if you're in bed at 6pm every day.

BurntOutGirl · 16/01/2023 11:33

I do... and love it.

Means l don't need heating on in the evening. Also only my bedroom has Sky attached

10HailMarys · 16/01/2023 11:41

Each to their own but I definitely wouldn't want to get into bed at 6pm (or go to sleep at 9pm). I usually finish work (at home) around 5.30/6pm and eat around 7.30/8pm. I might change into pyjamas after I've eaten but I don't go to bed until 11pm at the very earliest and if it was that early, I'd read for an hour before I got my head down.

DiddyHeck · 16/01/2023 11:47

Isn't exercise also good for depression?

Or at least doing something other than taking meds and lying in bed all evening?

Before anyone reads this wrong, I'm not saying meds aren't good for depression, just that surely doing something other than nothing as well as taking them would probably help?

HappyNewYear2023 · 16/01/2023 11:50

I love being in bed and if I'm home I'm in it. So warm and snuggly. I read, chat to friends or just scroll on the Internet.

When I get home I strip and put on my comfy clothes.

Caspianberg · 16/01/2023 12:01

No way. No idea how anyone would get anything done in life tbh.

If your up at 7.45am and in bed by 6pm, your barely up for 10 hours in a day? And work most of that.

With a 2 year old, 5-9pm is our busiest time of day tbh. We aim to eat between 6-7pm. So prepping dinner and occupying toddler 5-6pm. 7-8pm is tidying up for dinner, dishwasher on, general tidy, Ds plays and we FaceTime grandparents overseas. 8-9pm bath, stories, settling down to bed. If Ds is asleep by 8.30pm it’s a small miracle.
I then need 1-2 hours to sort other various things I can’t do in the day when working or toddler wrangling.

So in bed 10.30pm earliest to read a bit and sleep. Ds wake several times still, and then is up by 6am.

Well it's a parenting website... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Which also discusses many topics unrelated to parenting, which are also of interest to childless/childfree people. Surely you were aware of that?

Weddi · 16/01/2023 13:39

I don’t actually own pjs which is baffling to some, I know so I wear my clothes until I have a shower before bed. I sleep in a tshirt and undies. I have some baggier T-shirts I won’t wear outside that I wear to bed. I get dressed as soon as I wake up so I never lounge around in pjs. People find this odd but it’s just the way I do things.

I do have DC so I can’t actually chill out until they’re all in bed which is 9pm. DH and I will either watch TV or talk until around 10-10:30 when I go up to shower and we both go to bed after that.

StarDolphins · 16/01/2023 13:59

I’d love to do this but I’d feel too guilty on my cat! So I make sure I stay downstairs with her until 9pm…also, with my DD’s clubs, it wouldn’t be possible right now.

My mental health would be shot to shit if I spent all day sitting in the house working, and then all evening lying in bed.

Housework is before work or during lunch, but the bulk is weekends. I try to walk 45mins to an hour during lunch break if it's dry. Sometimes I will have a half hour walk before walk if I was early enough.

In the lighter months I will walk after work and usually get my 10k steps in.

I don't have family or friends locally, so I would have to see them at weekends anyway.

TeapotTitties · 16/01/2023 17:26

It sounds a little lonely and unhealthy to be honest OP.

I've been avoiding the word 'lazy' because it sounds judgemental but I would definitely consider myself lazy if I spent 14 hours in bed, after sitting down all day in the house working.

RedHelenB · 16/01/2023 17:31

I think it's a bit weird getting into bed that early tbh. I do sit on the sofa more in winter but I cook tea, pur a loas of washing in, wash up, walk the dog, read after tea and I think I'm quite lazy.
