Does anyone else get in PHs/bed about 6pm?

Obviously this will be hard if you work later or have kids etc.

I work from home most days. I finish at 5. Have a bath, get in PJs and then chill in bed watching TV/ reading/ relaxing all evening. This is during the darker months really (November - March). I don't know what else to do with myself and just feel tired tbh. I go to sleep at around 9pm.

In the summer it tends to be a bit later as it feels there is more of the evening, plus I have more energy. I may go for a walk after work for example.

Is it just me who does this? I still tend to be tired in the morning though, I need more sleep during the winter than summer. In summer I wake at 5:30 no issue, in the winter it's more 7:45.

Is it a fairly recent thing, this desire to be in your pyjamas most of the time you're at home? I don't remember it being a thing when I was younger (I'm early 50s). I just wonder why people are wearing clothes that are so uncomfortable that they feel the need to change into pjyamas as soon as humanly possible! My clothes (work or casual) are generally pretty comfortable.

oviraptor21 · 15/01/2023 18:59

No chance! Finish work around 5 or 6. Home and then often out again for whatever I'm doing in the evening. Even if not out I'll be busy or at least pottering. In bed around 12.30 usually. Up at 7 on a work day or between 8 and 9 at weekends.
Can't imagine wasting the whole evening in bed!

Haruka · 15/01/2023 19:05

One of the nicest feelings in the world is to take my bra off as soon as I get home, so I often change out of my work clothes, but rarely into pyjamas. I have "house clothes" instead - jeggins, long shirts or jumpers, comfy cardigans - just much more loose clothing, which is a relief after being in formal wear all day.

I don't, however, go to bed stupidly early very often, no. Too much to do and I don't have electronics in my bedroom, so if I want to read on mumsnet I have to stay in my office!

Yes, I always wonder this! Tbh, I don’t know anyone who does this, of any age, so it’s one of the rare occasions when I think ‘Is this just a Mn phenomenon?’ Or just that the early-evening pyjama-wearers are over-represented on Mn, like people who never answer the door and struggle with social interactions?

I always want to ask what exactly they’re taking off that’s so uncomfortable. I work in a job that requires me to look presentable and professional, but those clothes are perfectly comfortable.

No I'd feel like too much of my life was wasted

IHearYouHaveACrushOnMe · 15/01/2023 19:23

I had a very severe Vitamin B12 deficiency which really came to a head last year and I was more often than not fast asleep by 6 pm.

As a 48 year old with 2 DCs it was exceptionally limiting. Thankfully after fairly intensive medication and treatment I am better now. But if you are exhausted by then I would say you need to get checked out that there is not more to it.

DonutsAreNotLunch · 15/01/2023 19:25

I work outdoors and get quite muddy so I have to have a shower before bed. I usually have to run around until 6-7 most nights taking kids to activities then feed everyone but I get showered and changed after that. I’m usually in my pjs before kids.

I don’t go to bed until after 9 though, I probably would as soon as dc were in bed but feel bad leaving the dogs downstairs too early!

Benjispruce4 · 15/01/2023 19:25

I’m 51 btw with two grown up DC. I work with a childless 37 year old who is exhausted all the time. That’s not normal even for a teacher.

tiredmama23 · 15/01/2023 19:32

I'll get into my pjs as early as possible after coming home from work, usually around 6pm (I get home about 5.45 ish). 6-7pm is toddler bath and bedtime routine. Once toddler is asleep (usually by 7.30 latest), I have a shower, tea, and I'm usually in bed by 8.30/9. Sometimes I go to sleep straight away and others I will be watching/reading on my phone until 10/10.30 latest. If I go to sleep any later than 10pm I feel shattered the next day (toddler still wakes occasionally in the night😭) so I try to not stay awake past then. Some nights I skip out my tea if I'm really tired and just go straight to bed, so I tend to be asleep by 8/8.30 on those evenings. It's bliss. It's my favourite part of the day.

How's it wasted if someone's doing the things they enjoy, though? e.g. I could never consider an evening spent reading to be a waste of time just because it was done in bed.

I'm slightly atypical as I have chronic fatigue, so unless I'm going out and/or spending the evening with DH I tend to be in bed as soon as I've done everything I need to do for the day, because I'm physically spent by then. But no way is it wasted time. I watch a bit of TV/listen to podcasts but mainly read, or write on evenings the brain fog isn't too bad - I'm writing a novel and bed is my favourite place to write as it's the most comfortable.

Although my fatigue was originally what drove my early bedtimes, I think bed would still be my favourite place to read or write even if that wasn't in the mix.

For me, I hate bras (even sports ones - I have huge knockers) but can't go to work without one on, so that's a comfort thing.

The other thing is that a nice work dress or shirt can be close to £40 and a decent blazer £70 upwards. I cook from scratch when I get home, do some cleaning and also bathe/ brush teeth of the youngest and I cannot afford to stain my work clothes, unlike my £10 pyjama set from ASDA, which can take the odd sauce spill or tooth paste stain and will then just go straight in the wash.

NancyJoan · 15/01/2023 19:49

I can’t think of anything worse that getting into pyjamas at 6pm. I don’t want to eat dinner in the clothes I sleep in, and I enjoy pottering around downstairs until about 9, Reading, watching TV etc. Then up to the bedroom, get ready for bed and I’m asleep by 9:30.

Orcubed · 15/01/2023 19:51

Once my younger children are in bed I go for a shower, put on my pyjamas and then sit on the sofa watching tv or reading for a couple of hours before going to bed. It’s not about comfort for me, more a divide between my day and relaxation time.

I have outside clothes and indoors clothes, I.e. PJs, joggers. Soon as I'm home and have a chance I change. I thought it was normal, my partner does the same. I'm in my 40s and always have done this. I see home as my comfort place. Cosy.

bonzaitree · 15/01/2023 19:53

Only time I’d be in bed by 6pm would be if I’m very poorly. if I have a cold / flu obv I get I. He’d as soon as possible.

I think it’s very weird to go to bed every night at 6pm… are you unwell OP?

Benjispruce4 · 15/01/2023 19:56

I get out of my school clothes at 5pm into joggers etc if I’m only walking the dog after work. Don’t get into PJs until I’m getting into bed . I get it though, in the winter if you’re not going out again .

Whyisitsososohard · 15/01/2023 19:57

I don't have kids but wish I had time to go to bed at 6pm. But so your thing. It does feel like you're not getting to live your life much though. But if you are happy...

BellyDancer124 · 15/01/2023 20:04

Yes OP, I do exactly what you do. I work from home and have a fairly busy day (gym before work ands walk at lunch etc) so I'm ready for pjs around 6pm too Grin

Mol1628 · 15/01/2023 20:12

I also take work clothes off because I don’t want them stained etc. some of it gets hung up for the next day. No point putting on other proper clothes as this just makes more washing so pyjamas are just the easiest thing.

PinkSyCo · 15/01/2023 20:24

Yep I rarely go out in the evening in winter, my grown up kids spend all their time in their bedrooms when they’re home, so when I’m not working a night shift I am usually in bed by 7. I find it much cosier than rattling around downstairs on my own.

Same. My work clothes are fairly expensive. I have a disabled child who still needs feeding. So it’s pyjamas on when I get home.

elessar · 15/01/2023 20:46

I do get into my PJs straight after work - normally finish (WFH mostly) around 6.30/7, then shower and get into PJs.

But we would then have dinner around 8/9 and spend the evening downstairs, before going up to bed around midnight. We don't have a TV in the bedroom and only sleep in there, I think I'd feel really antsy if I went up so early.

Fuwari · 15/01/2023 20:48

I wfh so am always in PJs or comfy clothes anyway (unless I go out, but then change once home). But I could never go to bed at 6 or I’d be asleep by 7! Then wake up at some ridiculous hour. I do go to bed really early though, 8:30/9 most nights. Read for a while then lights off.

I have a friend who sometimes spends whole weekends in bed. She is awake but she just reads, watches tv etc. I couldn’t do that either. I can be pretty lazy but that long in bed would make me feel crap.

DialsMavis · 15/01/2023 20:51

When DH is away I am often showered and in bed by about 8.30pm in the winter, reading, watching TV on my laptop or pissing about on MN. I don't go to sleep then though. DD is usually doing her homework, chatting to her mates or preening in the bathroom. It is quite nice to be upstairs near/with her and means the heating can be off.

Agree. I can think of nothing worse. I only wear clothes that I find comfortable so I don’t feel the need to change. I put on my PJs at bed time and take them off fist thing before going downstairs. Eating breakfast in clothes I’ve slept in? Yuck, no thanks. And do you never do any sport / hobbies / take kids to clubs / go to the shops / meet friends?
