To wonder where Margot Robbie's internal organs are.... see Vanity Fair cover

This is not an intention to body shame - but I find the cover shot of Margot Robbie on Vanity Fair quite shocking. And unnecessary 😥
I have been just as thin, and was classed as underweight and diagnosed with an eating disorder.
I hope I'm not the only one who wonders what the next level for stars might be, if this is an aspirational "look". And for us regular humans.

See I just couldn't get past what a horrible dress it is, nothing about what size she was.

BunchHarman · 14/01/2023 20:48

This is not an underweight woman. She’s fucking glorious.

I did not say that she was underweight.

That VF cover image makes her look "too thin".

A PP said that, in dogs you should feel the ribs, but not see them. Same with horses - if bones stuck out like that on a horse, it would be a welfare case.

Yes I know, humans are different. (But equally, a fat horse would also be put on a diet/exercise plan as well.....)

If this is the first time the photo has been discussed on here, the VF did not generate the more widespread chatter they probably hoped for.

I didn't buy the magazine either, although I have (online) read the accompanying article/interview. She is lovely - and seems to still be surprised at her own success; this is not really about her - but the shot is, in my opinion, not the best for a cover.

Is it body shaming to discuss the body of a woman who does a photoshoot like that? She wants attention for how she looks, she wants people to talk about her & remember her because of how she looks. She makes a living (I imagine?) because of how she looks.

This isn't Melissa McCarthy who can look good (& is funny) or Adele who can look good (& write songs). However, MR is on that cover in those poses to make us talk about her body.

Not one of us have commented on what she was wearing or her eye shadow brand or even her haircut. The brands may have wanted us to care about her shoes, but fundamentally, they want us to notice her striking body.

ps: I never heard of MR before today. Suppose I want to try to figure out what she's done.

Tamarindtree · 14/01/2023 20:56

Physically she looks great and has an attractive face. What I find astounding is that she cannot act for toffee yet has a successful career as an actress.

BunchHarman · 14/01/2023 20:56

I’d be curious to know the shape of the people laying into her on here, and feelings they harbour about their own bodies and health.

Your ignorance has made you look a bit daft. She’s a very famous Australian actress. Not just a pretty face, a bloody good actress.

Yes. No one would should be body shamed and everyone should be encouraged to love their body. However the current more damaging trend is the normalisation of girls and young women being significantly overweight. This is more damaging to their health and well-being in both the short and long term than aspiring to remain slim and physically fit.

If you think this woman is too thin, you should unpack why. She is a healthy weight

I used to be a small size 8, you still couldn't see my ribs 🤷🏼‍♀️ so not sure what there is to unpack ... I find the ribs sticking out a bit much and wouldn't be something I'd encourage my daughters, nieces etc to aspire to (BTW my niece 20, is a tiny size 6, we have a naturally skinny family) so no underlying issues if that's what you're implying 😆

Margot Robbie has been in several big movies, starred with Brad Pitt, Leo DiCaprio, Jared Leto and Ryan Gosling, and has been nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA. She is hardly Kim Kardashian.

Personally I would rather DD aspire to look like Margot Robbie- DD is actually naturally slimmer- than look like Melissa McCarthy.

Body positivity has gone too far IMO, and now we are demonising perfectly normal bodies.

BungleandGeorge · 14/01/2023 21:06

Can’t tell from that picture whether she’s healthy or not. However, the question is why vogue have put her in a pose, used contour on her face and asked her to breathe in to make her look as thin as possible? I’m sure a lot of young girls looking at that are not noticing the manipulation…

I'm not sure you can say that people are "laying into her" - and I certainly was not. But, as @lljkk has said - the fact that she is on the cover of Vanity Fair, in that pose, in that dress.... does kind imply that she won't mind being discussed, and with half the dress cut away and her lower ribs and abdomen on display, that such discussion might be about those factors and their appeal, or lack of - with OUT it being body-shaming????

I also made it clear that I am not impartial about this, ED history and have been the same shape as she is when I was younger, whether or not in the throes of the ED - which was triggered by family issues, not any kind of desire to have my ribs showing - which ALL of them did!

(And yet, people either told me that I looked good - or told me to "eat a sandwich" - but, I never though they were body-shaming, even though people did feel inclined to comment on my slender size (ergo, weight, I guess....) at that time, than they would were I bigger than the size 4 I was then.)

She looks fine to me. Obviously sucking her stomach in and probably been photoshopped but not unhealthy. Funny how it's not OK to comment on fat women's bodies but slim women are fair game.

This! Always this!

doadeer · 14/01/2023 21:08

She just has defined obliques to me. Looks toned. I don't think she looks very comfortable though, it's not a nice picture

ItsGettingCold · 14/01/2023 21:09

I just saw the cover and totally understand what you mean!

Butchyrestingface · 14/01/2023 21:09

Out of the water, everybody.

To wonder where Margot Robbie's internal organs are.... see Vanity Fair cover
leithreas · 14/01/2023 21:10

My question would be why did vanity fair think that the best photo for the cover is one where she is sucking in so her ribs are pronounced? She has a great body, why choose this distorted image?

Eyerollcentral · 14/01/2023 21:10

Different bodies are different though. Just because you were slim and your ribs weren’t visible doesn’t mean MR is too thin because you can see hers. I have a friend who is taller than me, broader than me, two dress sizes bigger than me and her ribs are visible whereas mine haven’t been seen since before the pandemic. Your response that you hope the poster didn’t have daughters or granddaughters because she did not agree MR is dangerously thin is an extreme reaction to a totally reasonable statement.

It’s such an odd pose and shape but I suppose they are attempting to seem edgy - which I don’t imagine Vanity Fair will ever be!!!

Quincythequince · 14/01/2023 21:14

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 14/01/2023 20:01

She looks fantastic. A strong woman with great core muscles and clearly works out lot and watches what she eats.

Our views of whats 'normal' is distorted because so many are obese.

Agree completely.

And OP, if you comment unfavourably on someone else’s body as you have here, you ARE bodyshaming.

Shall we post a slightly overweight woman and do the same thing?

Of course not!

IntentionalError · 14/01/2023 21:14

It’s photoshopped. They all are. She doesn’t really look like that. Nobody does, and it would be a very bad idea to try to look like that.

I would have thought the intended effect was to flatten her stomach rather than expose her ribs. The dress isn’t nice at all though, that’s the most offensive bit.

Shall we all comment on Lizzie in a bikini too?

I know which of these two images looks way more healthy, but I also know which one will get more stick. And you’ve just proven that.

petermaddog · 14/01/2023 21:17

5'7 125pounds same as kidman at the same age
me too
my niece shes 32

It would not be a very bad idea to try and look like the toned, slim Margot Robbie. Starvation is not required to achieve this look, especially not if you are young!!!
