To think most people have *not* tried cocaine?

bluegreygreen · 12/01/2023 20:36

On another thread, a poster states that 'most people have at least tried cocaine'.

I haven't, and family haven't. However, on threads about drugs there always seems to be a clear divide - either people haven't taken them, or everyone they know has.

So, for a very unscientific survey:

YABU - I have tried cocaine
YANBU - I have not tried cocaine

Never tried it, never wanted to. The same goes for my husband, our adult sons, and their partners.

Naive

nevermindtherind · 12/01/2023 23:10

Have done. Quite a bit when younger though never seriously. In last 15 - 20 years maybe 5 times. Most people I know have tried it. I actually don't like it. Only ever really had it when drunk and it seemed a good idea. Wouldn't buy it.

Muddlingmiddling · 12/01/2023 23:12

Its always been rife with the middle classes. Costs more than weed so there's a certain social cache in taking it. Wanky Londoner type drug

Shambolical1 · 12/01/2023 23:16

Never tried or wanted to.

Over the last eighteen months I've been sad to witness a family (not mine) falling apart around a heavy user. Stealing from the family business, stealing from the family - think kids' moneyboxes - not holding down a job where a second income is needed. Crashing cars, losing driving licence. Sleeping it off during the day and forgetting to do the school run. Not waking up for morning school runs. Kids going off the rails. Many, many unfortunate choices. Debts. Inappropriate behaviour. Despairing partner.

It's a lot.

Lennon80 · 12/01/2023 23:16

I dont know a single person who hasn’t.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/01/2023 23:25

I've never tried cocaine and I don't know anyone who has. Maybe it's an age thing. I am 60 and weed was more prevalent when I was younger. I haven't tried that either but my DH has.

housemaus · 12/01/2023 23:26

Kaathesnake · 12/01/2023 22:58

people at work take it, and I’ve was once offered it as a birthday present 😱 but never have… always thought I’d sneeze or everywhere!
What is it like? Would you say it was worth the money for example?

If I'm honest, I much prefer(red) a night out with it than with alcohol. I don't really like drinking, but I enjoy coke. Couple of lines and I'm in a good mood, much less socially anxious, and I enjoy myself far more. No hangover.

But I'm older now and haven't taken it in a good while, and don't think I would again, mostly for moral reasons around the supply chain (which in my 20s I didn't think about).

As for worth the money... not at all, because of the moral implication. But if I could get it without the ethical concerns, then yeah. I'd much rather be able to ethically share a gram with my friends and have a night out I enjoy than spend the same amount on overpriced cocktails and have a hangover the next day.

ColdHandsHotHead · 12/01/2023 23:26

Never tried it. Never even tried smoking tobacco, let alone marijuana. I don't know where people find the money for stuff like this.

maddy68 · 12/01/2023 23:26

I'm a teacher. Most of my colleagues openly take it.

Also lots of my out of work friends take it or at least have tried it.

Well if teachers can afford coke then they've no right to complain about being underpaid!

lifeofasd · 12/01/2023 23:28

Most 30-40 year olds do. I wouldn't call them addicts, people I know would take it occasionally maybe every few months on a big night out, especially if they don't want a hangiver or to be tired the next day..I know plenty people of have taken cocaine or who still do, makes no difference to me. I've seen alcohol ruin many more lives than cocaine, probabym because alcohol is so cheap but cocaine is expensive. I know students, doctors, business owners etc all who take cocaine recreational. For people who say no one in their family does or none of their friends do, you are very naive. How do you know? None of my family know that I have ever touched drugs, they would be completely shocked and none of my main circle of friends, including my best friend from childhood knows I have ever taken a line of cocaine in the past because she is in a very different mindset to me when it comes to drugs. She sounds like some of you here saying nobody in my family or circle of friends would ever take drugs. Alcohol is way worse when it comes to altered behaviour and violence and even fatal incidents. And before people go on about the law and how it's illegal, there are many many products out there that you purchase on a daily basis that have come from the suffering of child labour and human trafficking.I have taken cocaine in the past and it is definitely one of the more tamer drugs as in their is no hallucinating like some people who smoke weed or take ecstasy tablets experience. With cocaine, a line will give you energy instantly and that's it. So the irritability that comes with being exhausted or hungover disappears immediately and you feel energised( not hyper) but just a good level of energy and hence your mood improves instantly because you no longer feel exhausted. So you just enjoy what you are doing in that moment as your tiredness is gone.
So for an honest statistic I would give a closely accurate statistic that the percentage of people over age 18 who have tried alcohol at least once is approx 80%, who have smoked weed at least once 70% and who have taken cocaine at least once 40% and is on the rise

I'm as middle class as you come and lived in London for several decades. Have never used it, and I only ever knew a couple of people who did. I think your comment says a lot about your prejudices though.

4thtimeunlucky · 12/01/2023 23:30

I haven't but DH has (20 or 30 years ago, not recently)
I'm pretty sure no one else in the family have

Don't be ridiculous it's cheaper than a night out on booze

Leggingslife · 12/01/2023 20:51

Never have.
What's it like? What happens to you?

Within 10 seconds of taking a line, all your tiredness disappears. You become full of life and so in turn you enjoy talking or listening to whomever you are with because you have energy back. It's not like a drug where u are so full of energy that u are hyped up and running around like crazy..it's none of that. Think of a time where u woke up, filled with energy and determination to get a lot of chores or work done..well that's what it is..it makes u feel good because u feel energised but not like weed where u can be stoned and laughing away at anything..cocaine doesn't alter your mind like that at all..it's just a good feeling of feeling upbeat and energetic and back to normal and not exhausted from day to day life

cpphelp · 12/01/2023 23:35

I'm 37.5 years of that makes any difference to my YANBU answer!?

Muddlingmiddling · 12/01/2023 23:27

Would you say "if teachers can afford a night on the G&Ts then they've no right to complain about being underpaid", I wonder?

Unless you're absolutely caning it, sharing with a friend or two really isn't that expensive. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but it's not like teachers are claiming they need payrises for their £200 a day coke habits. You're talking splitting £50 between 2 people on a night out with someone else, which would be cheaper than buying drinks in a lot of cases.

LakieLady · 12/01/2023 23:38

Tinytigertail · 12/01/2023 20:42

YABU, was very 'normal' when socialising back in the 90s/00s with in my peer group.

It was very normal in the 80s in my peer group, I guess I'm older than you, @Tinytigertail .

It was also rife at one place I worked. Not in fashion or the music industry, but local government.

Mind you, we had to go to committee meetings that went on till midnight after doing a full day in the office. I defy anyone to get through planning applications sub-committee without a chemical prop.

powershowerforanhour · 12/01/2023 23:40

"there are many many products out there that you purchase on a daily basis that have come from the suffering of child labour and human trafficking"

Um, which products do I buy almost daily that involve human trafficking?
I assume that in my part of the world cocaine and suchlike funds paramilitaries of various shades ie absolute murdering scum, which is part of the reason why I have never tried it.

Panpastels · 12/01/2023 23:42

I have taken it on many occasions in the past. The last few times I took it I felt suicidal the next day, so haven't taken it since.

JudgeRudy · 12/01/2023 23:43

I think age makes a difference. I'd say 50% of those under 40 have tried coke and weed. Whether their willing to post is a different matter.
I find people often struggle to comprehend other people's behaviours and choices simply because it's different to theirs eg "Yes, she said shes had coke before and she's got kids. Who'd have thought. Her parents are so nice"

Justanotherlurker · 12/01/2023 23:44

90's counter culture was based on drug use so you're either part of the younger puritan counter culture or you are not aware of your surroundings.

If MN was around during the 90's the MC/UMC threads would be filled with what markers should they look out for on the price of coke, as soon as EDM started becoming main stream, coke was seen as a mc drug because mdma was considereded working class (despite the whole scene coming from the wc) /

You not knowing coke users is showing your limited friend group, and not understanding where we are at least musically without it (not denying coke heads now are generally dick heads but that is a different topic)
