To think most people have *not* tried cocaine?

On another thread, a poster states that 'most people have at least tried cocaine'.

I haven't, and family haven't. However, on threads about drugs there always seems to be a clear divide - either people haven't taken them, or everyone they know has.

So, for a very unscientific survey:

YABU - I have tried cocaine
YANBU - I have not tried cocaine

I did once. It’s not for me.

not sure how people can speak for other people so confidently especially their kids and kids partners, I’m pretty sure my dad and my in laws would say I haven’t if pushed, but that’s because they have no reason to know what I did as a young adult.

juice92 · 13/01/2023 12:01

When I was of an age where I would have been interested (18/19) I had no clue how to get it/knew no-one who seemed to have it. By the time I could have had the opportunity (probably 25) I no longer had any interest.

I know a few people who have, and although I can guess most of the people in my life haven't, you can never be sure.

Totally different. Cirrhosis is caused by repeated exposure to alcohol. Coronary artery spasm in response to cocaine can happen any time you take it. It’s a response to the drug you have just taken, not to repeated exposure.

Cocaine is a filthy, dangerous drug. There’s a reason why doctors- who who will take/use pretty much any other dodgy substance- legal or illegal- steer well clear of it.

Huh? I’ve known a fair few doctors and med students that have used cocaine.

RuthW · 13/01/2023 12:02

I don't know anyone to my knowledge who has tried it or any kind of drug.

The sheer conviction that they know 100%

My parents didn't know the half of what I got up to in my 20s, and I hate to break it to those on here who are talking on behalf of their DCs...

...but neither do you.

Too many variables to say that 100% of DC that say they have never taken drugs are lying. I don't know if my two have, I'd have to ask them.

My parents don't know what I got up to in my teens and twenties but none of it involved drugs.

I have tried it (plenty of times!) Amongst lots of other stuff in my youth. I wouldn't dare now but that's more because I've known friends of friends who've sadly died from drug use since and so I'm far too terrified now to take anything again.

The thing with cocaine is not that I think most people have. Just that I think it's more common than a lot of people think. I'd say out of my friends more of them have tried it at least once than those who never have but wouldn't touch it these days. And there are lots of people I'd have never expected to have done it who still do the occasional time!

Tbh I don't regret trying any of the drugs I did when I was younger. I wouldn't do them now and I'd not like the thought of my own DC trying them either but it was an experience and, not that I'm glad I did or anything, but I don't regret it.

Totally agree with this. I think cocaine use now is much more common than it was when I was young in the 90s purely because it’s much cheaper than it used to be. It was an expensive drug for celebs and yuppies back then.

reddwarfgeek · 13/01/2023 12:05

I did once, I've had a few drugs once or twice when I was in my 20s.
Cocaine was not my thing at all. Made me jittery, chatty and energetic in an aggressive way.
I know a lot of people who have tried it.

Oh i'm not saying that at all, in fact i think most are probably telling the truth, just seems like a bit of a bizarre smug humblebrag to me to speak on behalf of them on a thread like this when at least some are just being spun a yarn

Patienceisntvirtuous · 13/01/2023 12:09

I haven't tried cocaine. But your thread title doesn't fit your voting-I think YABU in general, and some others, I mean how can we POSSIBLY know if anyone in our family has tried cocaine? Even if we ask them, it isn't the sort of thing people are honest about with everybody.
I didn't think my partner had until I asked her.
I am trying to think of most people I know as in friends, acquaintances, family. Family, I'd say I am at least 50/50 on some of them as to whether they have. Friends/acquaintances I'd be surprised if most of them hadn't.
It isn't an 'us and them' thing really IME. A lot of 'normal' people do things liek cocaine.

christmaspudding43 · 13/01/2023 12:13

I tried it once in my late teens, at the end of a night out, at a mate's house. I don't really remember noticing any effect and have never done it since.

These days I have a real bee in my bonnet over the supply chain of it and struggle to reconcile the people I know who use it and their ethical stance on other things with their coke use. That said, I'm far from morally perfect myself in terms of consumption (nothing illegal! But not veggie/vegan, do buy consumer goods that may have supply chain issues I guess). I don't have a particular issue with the fact it is mind altering although I haven't got a great deal of knowledge on addictive qualities and other risks.

being a meat eater does not make you morally dubious what a ridiculous thing to say

Huh? I’ve known a fair few doctors and med students that have used cocaine.

Med students maybe - they don’t know any better. You won’t find many qualified doctors using it because it can randomly kill you stone dead.

It’s difficult- for obvious reasons- to get reliable data on the relative risks of street drugs, but cocaine is probably more dangerous than heroin (bearing in mind that lots of heroin users don’t inject). It’s playing Russian roulette with your heart. Anyone with kids who uses it is an absolute twat.

OldTinHat · 13/01/2023 12:18

YANBU

You don’t know anyone who’s even smoked a joint? I find that hard to believe.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/01/2023 12:32

Never taken it, or any other illegal drug, for several reasons, starting with the fact that they are illegal.

  • I am a law-abiding person (and also extremely risk-averse). If I felt strongly I did want to use substances which are currently banned, I'd be out there campaigning for a change in the law, not just breaking it and turning a blind eye to others doing the same, including people in responsible jobs, people with caring responsbilities and people who are going to drive while under the influence, all putting other people at risk.
  • I don't want to give money to organised crime gangs who use it to fund other vile illegal activities like people trafficking, sex work, theft, fraud.
  • I don't want blood on my hands from the way the gangs work both overseas and here. How can others just pretend they know nothing about this? County lines is on the news a lot and is ruining young people's lives.
  • I don't want to take risks with substances produced and distributed with no quality standards or guarantees whatsoever.
  • I don't want to take the risk of aneurysm and other known risks to physical and mental health that come with taking drugs.
  • I don't want to risk addiction.

I do drink alcohol in moderation, because it's a known quantity, a controlled trade and profits from it are returned to society in the form of taxes paying for public spending.

I don't smoke because of the health risks, but if I did, I'd also be paying something back through taxes.

Probably not surprising given how strongly I feel that nobody I know has ever admitted to me that they've taken cocaine. I'd be pretty upset to learn that one of my children had. I know my husband hasn't.

lovelilies · 13/01/2023 12:35

I haven't, but I would have if anyone had offered it t me back in the day!

I'm 42 btw

Chikapu · 13/01/2023 12:36

I don't know anyone who has tried it.

FetlocksBlowingInTheWind · 13/01/2023 13:00

YANBU.

Never tried it, never moved in any circles where anyone did (to my knowledge) so it has never been an option.

But I think a lot of people who drink a lot do take it, judging by what I've heard in AA meetings. I must have had a very sheltered life!

I’ve definitely known qualified doctors who partake recreationally, not just med students.

I’m not commenting on the moral or ethical issues surrounding drug use, I’m saying that ‘doctors don’t touch cocaine’ hasn’t been my experience.

divisionhour · 13/01/2023 13:10

I've know lots qualified of drs and other medics who have taken cocaine and various other drugs

divisionhour · 13/01/2023 13:11

'Known of lots of qualified Drs' that should have said

3WildOnes · 13/01/2023 13:12

I also know a few doctors who use it occasionally.

NewYearNewName2023 · 13/01/2023 13:13

Nope, but I know lots of people who have

Panda89 · 13/01/2023 13:29

I was chatting to a mate about this the other day, came away thinking maybe I am just really boring!
I've never tried any drug, never had the opportunity to try a drug and never seen anyone else take drugs (to my knowledge).
I've never really been interested in partying though, and didn't go to uni so maybe I bypassed that.

I was really shocked recently to find out some of my social circle do cocaine on nights out, they are mainly late 30's early 40's and one is a PCSO!

Stressedmum2017 · 13/01/2023 13:33

Pretty much everyone I know has tried it, including my grandparents. I know primary school teachers and social workers who do it. I think people who are judgemental about it probably don't realise how much people will lie to them about what they've done.
