To think most people have *not* tried cocaine?

bluegreygreen · 12/01/2023 20:36

On another thread, a poster states that 'most people have at least tried cocaine'.

I haven't, and family haven't. However, on threads about drugs there always seems to be a clear divide - either people haven't taken them, or everyone they know has.

So, for a very unscientific survey:

YABU - I have tried cocaine
YANBU - I have not tried cocaine

I know very few people that haven't tried it. (I don't know anyone who takes it regularly anymore).

Same.

Moat people I know have dabbled once or twice

TheTyrannyOfChoice · 12/01/2023 23:45

There is plenty of data available about this. From the ONS, only 4% of young people used it in 2021. So, highly unlikely ‘most’ people have tried it.

Powder cocaine: There was no change in the prevalence of last year powder cocaine use for adults aged 16 to 59 years (2.0%) and 16 to 24 years (4.0%) compared with the year ending March 2020. However, levels were higher than the year ending December 1995 when estimates were first recorded.

Cassillero · 12/01/2023 23:47

Perhaps it depends where you live? It's rife in my town. All drugs are in fact. As well as knife crime and county lines. Awesome.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/01/2023 23:49

No one I know has tried it. Certainly none of my friends and they have no reason to lie.

I think some people try to normalise it to make them feel better about themselves. Doesnt make it true though.

cariadlet · 12/01/2023 23:50

I wonder if this is partly age related and industry related.

I was a student in the 80s. Drugs of choice for people I knew were alcohol and cannabis. Occasionally magic mushrooms. Nobody I knew (or knew of) took cocaine. If asked, I'd have probably assumed it was for rich City types.

As far as I know, none of my friends, family or colleagues have ever used cocaine.

mamabear715 · 12/01/2023 23:52

Absolutely not. No drink, no drugs. I like to be fully in control!

oakleaffy · 12/01/2023 23:54

Powder coke is more “ Middle class”
crack cocaine is something that is used hand in hand with heroin- However, some wealthy people do use these- despite the seedier image than “A line”.

When these were legally prescribed , there was NO drug crime in UK, according to Home Office.

90's counter culture was based on drug use so you're either part of the younger puritan counter culture or you are not aware of your surroundings.

If MN was around during the 90's the MC/UMC threads would be filled with what markers should they look out for on the price of coke, as soon as EDM started becoming main stream, coke was seen as a mc drug because mdma was considereded working class (despite the whole scene coming from the wc) /

You not knowing coke users is showing your limited friend group, and not understanding where we are at least musically without it (not denying coke heads now are generally dick heads but that is a different topic)

I was a student in Newcastle in the 90s. Plenty of clubs, gigs, alcohol and sex. No coke. None of us did. Your experience is only yours. Most people are more similar to the OP.

Never tried it, never wanted to. The same goes for my husband, our adult sons, and their partners.

How are you sure that your adult sons and their partners never have?

divisionhour · 13/01/2023 00:06

I know very few people who haven’t dabbled in their teens/uni days or twenties. There are also quite a few politicians who’ve had to admit to taking it. Cocaine is a horrible drug such a waste of money and unethical due to supply chain. I haven’t dabbled in years myself, I am still partial to the odd spliff from time to time though. I’d like to see the laws relaxed about cannabis use.

Daechwita · 13/01/2023 00:07

I'd say that at least 3/4 of my friends across numerous social circles have tried coke that I know of and considerably more than that have experimented with MDMA and weed.

I've dabbled with coke although I could quite happily never take it again.

keeprunning55 · 13/01/2023 00:07

I think an awful lot of people have tried it. Far more than I realised although I haven’t

Worriedatwork1 · 13/01/2023 00:09

I have in the early naughties but not for at least 17-18 years, it fitted with a time of life of partying all night and then going to work, wouldn’t touch it now I’m a mum with a decent job

PuzzleMonster · 13/01/2023 03:20

Ifailed · 12/01/2023 21:00

What's it like? What happens to you?

Makes you talk shite and contribute to murder, enslavement, rape, child abuse and general misery in Central America.

But hey, that doesn't matter when you're having fun, eh?

🙄🙄

Moobae · 13/01/2023 03:45

You have no idea what your family have done

Yesthatismychildsigh · 13/01/2023 03:47

I saw that staggeringly stupid post, but thought what’s the point commenting. Maybe in that posters crappy world most people do. What a shame they don’t realise most decent people don’t live like that.

CheesyCrumpet · 13/01/2023 04:04

I've never tried it, not wanted to. As far as I'm aware, no one I know has either.
I wouldn't even know where to get it from.
I once shoved a pea up each nostril when I was a kid though if that's any help.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 13/01/2023 04:44

IntentionalError · 12/01/2023 20:45

I absolutely have taken cocaine. And ecstasy, amphetamines & cannabis. But then, I was a student in the early 90s…

Interesting. I’m of the same vintage and remember coke being a media/rich kids/City wankers’ drug. No one I knew used it, tho speed, E and cannabis were all very common.

MavisMcMinty · 13/01/2023 04:50

I’ve tried most drugs, but cocaine was a rich man’s drug when I was young, so we used “speed” instead. Tried to get cocaine for my OH’s 50th birthday, but was secretly relieved when I couldn’t source any, because it’s cardiotoxic and it would be just my luck for him to have a fatal cardiac arrest.

I doubt that would happen after taking a few lines as a one off.

You don't get cirosis of the liver after a few drinks.

Cosycover · 13/01/2023 07:20

CrapBucket · 12/01/2023 22:49

I would not have a clue where to even get any! Plus I would be terrified of ending up like Zammo or Trainspotting.

That would be heroin.

TroysMammy · 13/01/2023 07:28

Never have, never wanted to, never even had a puff on a cigarette either.

I don't what happens in what generation but if you need to be off your head on drugs to make decent music doesn't say much for any talent in the first place.

I don't assume everyone has done or hasn't done anything, it doesn't take too many brains to realise not everyone of each generation is not the same as everyone else

TodayInahurry · 13/01/2023 07:36

Funny really, people are using it are just funding the vile people who run organised crime. Yet people who eat vegan food, for the good of the planet, use it. It fries your brain, seen it first hand. Near relation got involved in trafficking ended up in an unpleasant third world prison.

mozzyworries · 13/01/2023 07:48

I've tried it and so have a lot of my London friends. I don't like it, if you want to take drugs there are far more enjoyable ones available.
