To think most people have *not* tried cocaine?

bluegreygreen · 12/01/2023 20:36

On another thread, a poster states that 'most people have at least tried cocaine'.

I haven't, and family haven't. However, on threads about drugs there always seems to be a clear divide - either people haven't taken them, or everyone they know has.

So, for a very unscientific survey:

YABU - I have tried cocaine
YANBU - I have not tried cocaine

Oh yeah and policemen of course.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 13/01/2023 13:34

@minipie agreed but there is a lot of naivety out there!

HelloJan · 13/01/2023 13:36

I have never tried any drugs and never had any desire to try them. Neither has my DH.

TwittleBee · 13/01/2023 13:37

It does feel like the majority in my circle of family, friends and colleagues (I haven't but have plenty of opportunity if I wanted)

BanjoKnickers · 13/01/2023 13:40

Yes, we use it a few times a year. We have friends who do the same who we would talk to about it. We have friends who don't who we wouldn't.

The friends who don't use drugs would probably be saying that no one in their circle is a user. You may well think that no one you know uses drugs, but you may be wrong!

Patienceisntvirtuous · 13/01/2023 15:08

People who use illegal/dubious substances do not tend to discuss it with people who they know, or assume do not.

divisionhour · 13/01/2023 15:12

Yes all those people who no one they know does it including their adult children etc you can't know for sure as they are highly unlikely to tell you.

My mother still thinks I was a virgin until my wedding night Grin

Beezknees · 13/01/2023 15:16

Never tried it, never would.

DonnaHadDee · 13/01/2023 15:35

I have not, nor DH. I'm not aware of anyone in my social or work circles that I'd be friendly with either. But as earlier posters mentioned above it possibly a topic they would not mention to me.

I lived in Dublin Ireland for a few years and it was occasionally visible in city center on my very few nights out, but not something really on my radar. I now live in a rural area in Northern Ireland the the drug is very prevalent here in the larger small towns near where I live. It's been an eye opener for me!

Stripperyone · 13/01/2023 15:36

NC to add, as an ex stripper who still dips my toe in every now and again, I've seen a LOT of cocaine. I've also had it sniffed off various parts of my body.

It isn't just your 'typicals' who do or would do it. It's everyone. It's your 'professionals', and yes, doctors aren't somehow the 'Ew no!' types. Nor are people who work in law enforcement, gym instructors, older people, family men etc etc. People from every sphere of society use cocaine.

And no, miraculously I've never tried it. I don't like the thought that it may stop me from enjoying a few glasses of wine/gin, as in perhaps I'll feel it isn't a good night out without it? A lot of people I know are like that. And the Hep C risk isn't so high, but It's there. Ethics too. Nope. I am not too bothered about the legalities because, quite frankly I don't think it being illegal is helpful at all to any of the drugs 'war'. But I still don't fancy being caught with it and losing my (professional) career.

Ericaequites · 13/01/2023 15:40

I tried smoking a cigarette on my parents’ patio at twelve with a friend because it was sophisticated and would make me look older. I puked on my shoes and the decking. I had to sweep the patio and hose it down so my mother wouldn’t know. There was no passing off people puke as dog puke with her. I never touched a cigarette again.

adulthumanfemalemum · 13/01/2023 15:42

Never tried any drug apart from a halfhearted suck on a communal spliff once! I would be very very surprised to hear that anyone in my friendship group has taken cocaine but maybe I'm naive and they all did in their youth before I knew them. I never saw or knew about anyone taking it all through my teens or 20s. Cannabis and alcohol was all I ever saw people doing. Heard about people taking pills at nightclubs but again, not anyone that I knew. I'm appalled at the idea that cocaine might be considered "normal" by anyone!

Beneficialchampion2 · 13/01/2023 15:59

Makes me laugh all these posts claiming their DH or children have never touched it. How do you know?

Personally I have and based on the 500 or so people I have worked with at various companies big and small I would estimate it to be around 1/8-1/10.

Do you think I told my partner or mother I tried it in the past? Hell no. If I was single I'd quite happily use cocaine recreationally. But my partner doesn't like drugs and out of respect to her I won't take them, not do I have any real desire to any more now that I am older.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 13/01/2023 16:11

@Stripperyone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do an AMA. That little snippet is too enticing!
I'm wondering if you're a mate of mine 😝

Equally, how do you know the people who say they’ve tried it actually have?

True, but at an educated guess that's less likely than the other way around.

@TheRealKatnissEverdeen Old, but still going! I've just replied to the last couple of posts.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 13/01/2023 11:54

Totally different. Cirrhosis is caused by repeated exposure to alcohol. Coronary artery spasm in response to cocaine can happen any time you take it. It’s a response to the drug you have just taken, not to repeated exposure.

Cocaine is a filthy, dangerous drug. There’s a reason why doctors- who who will take/use pretty much any other dodgy substance- legal or illegal- steer well clear of it.

I know doctors and nurses who take it.

Cocaine kills alot less people than alcohol.

Yet alcohol doesn't carry this stigma.

All drugs should be legal imo.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 14/01/2023 08:05

I have had it, as have about half of my friends and colleagues. I think it's overrated, but I have ADHD so it doesn't really work on me anyway. The death industry behind it puts me off more than the drug itself. I do not get the hysteria behind casual drug use.

Mm, do you think that might be because more people use alcohol than cocaine?

Very few people die from occasional light use of alcohol. Cocaine can kill you as easily the first time you use it as the 1000th. It gets more dangerous as you age, but it can kill young people too.

BCxx · 14/01/2023 12:06

i haven’t, my group of friends haven’t but my husband has years ago and all of his friends will have. More common for men where we are. I absolutely despise it!

Surely there’s loads of strippers so the chance of this one being a mate of yours is very very slim?🤷‍♀️

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 14/01/2023 21:52

@BellePeppa fair dues - point taken. But I do have a few who have similar stories to tell.

Thesonglastslonger · 14/01/2023 21:56

Nope. Cos I’m not an idiot. But even if I was an idiot I still wouldn’t buy from a supply chain with that much murder in.
