To think most people have *not* tried cocaine?

bluegreygreen · 12/01/2023 20:36

On another thread, a poster states that 'most people have at least tried cocaine'.

I haven't, and family haven't. However, on threads about drugs there always seems to be a clear divide - either people haven't taken them, or everyone they know has.

So, for a very unscientific survey:

YABU - I have tried cocaine
YANBU - I have not tried cocaine

I haven’t, I don’t know anyone who has or let’s say, anyone who has admitted trying it.

whumpthereitis · 13/01/2023 10:56

I think when a lot of people say ‘everyone does it’ they’re not necessarily doing so because they want to make themselves feel better, or apply peer pressure, but because in their social circle it’s true. ‘Everyone’ doesn’t mean ‘everyone’, it means ‘everyone I socialise with’.

YANBU

MXVIT · 13/01/2023 11:02

Very much enjoying the posters who are 100% confident their DCs have never tried it.

That jokey adage about the two stark surprising truths of adulthood comes to mind: "Everyone does coke, and cheese is fucking expensive"

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 13/01/2023 11:07

I haven't used it and don't know anyone that does

21 year old dd knows loads of people who have (or say they have)

YourPositionInTheQueueIs10292 · 13/01/2023 11:08

I have tried it (plenty of times!) Amongst lots of other stuff in my youth. I wouldn't dare now but that's more because I've known friends of friends who've sadly died from drug use since and so I'm far too terrified now to take anything again.

The thing with cocaine is not that I think most people have. Just that I think it's more common than a lot of people think. I'd say out of my friends more of them have tried it at least once than those who never have but wouldn't touch it these days. And there are lots of people I'd have never expected to have done it who still do the occasional time!

Tbh I don't regret trying any of the drugs I did when I was younger. I wouldn't do them now and I'd not like the thought of my own DC trying them either but it was an experience and, not that I'm glad I did or anything, but I don't regret it.

I haven't nor tried a cigarette so my parents could honestly think that about me as it is actually true?

So you actually think 100% of children have really tried it?

YourPositionInTheQueueIs10292 · 13/01/2023 11:10

Oh and yes my parents would still swear blind to you that I'd never touched a drug so... Yeah.

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 13/01/2023 11:10

I am confident my children haven't tried it

One of them has tried other drugs just not that one

It really surprised me the other day when dh and I had 4 young adults in the house and a grandparent and we were talking about drugs and only 3 of us had never tried drugs

Even the grandparent had tried them !

I don't think 100% of children have tried it. I don't think you can say with 100% confidence that lots haven't just because their parents don't think they have though.

QuizzlyBear · 13/01/2023 11:12

I was a student in the 90s and had my fill of booze, pills, weed and acid. Never tried cocaine though as it was just seen as too expensive.

Nowadays I'll have the odd drink or spliff but that's it. Chatting to my hairdresser and nail lady (both 30) they tell me that literally everyone they know does cocaine pretty regularly. I was a bit 😳 but mentioning it to others since, it seems they aren't wrong.

EileenAdler · 13/01/2023 11:13

Never taken drugs of any sort, ever.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 12/01/2023 20:43

I haven't and most friends haven't but I know two groups of people who have and think it's to do with demographic and industry in both those cases.

Yep this

In some circles it’s standard. In others it’s not at all.

I guess if you’re in the first group you might assume everyone is like you and your friends (though surely people should realise this isn’t necessarily the case…)

YourPositionInTheQueueIs10292 · 13/01/2023 11:16

The thing I found with coke (not touched it for many MANY years now) but when I was younger, is that people took it as a sort of compliment to alcohol. Some of the best nights I had out drinking in my late teens/early 20s were also the ones where we'd have coke as well because it kept you in that sort of good drunk phase for longer rather than not enough or too drunk.

namechange4774 · 13/01/2023 11:18

I think it depends on the groups you mixed with. A lot of my previous school friends have. My uni friends/ friends I have now not many if any at all have.

Sprogonthetyne · 13/01/2023 11:18

I've never tried it, but for a part of my younger life I was hanging around with plenty of people who did, so had ample opportunity. Did dabble in other drugs but coke never appealed.

xogossipgirlxo · 13/01/2023 11:19

Hard to tell, I think many many people try drugs. I haven't personally, I never smoked pot etc. I don't feel like I'm missing out, it's just not my thing. Plus my parents scared the hell out of me when I was a child, that kept me away from drugs, cigs and alcohol.

GettingStuffed · 13/01/2023 11:42

I've never tried it, never bed offered it. It's a really dangerous drug, there have been deaths in as little as 30mg, although most people who did have taken more than 1.2g. That's way less than most people use. For those of you who still take it would you like to leave your children parentless?

Choconut · 13/01/2023 11:49

I remember in my last year of uni a few of the lads did coke and it was the talk of the campus for a few days as it had always been booze/pills/weed. Apart from that I've never been aware of anyone doing in (I'm in my 40's). I think it's quite sad to still be taking drugs in your 40's.

NeuroWasabi · 13/01/2023 11:52

YANBU, I haven't tried it, was never offered it.

One of my siblings has, actually it was an addiction at one point which caused debt. That's the only person I know well who I know has tried it.

GinandTonic1975 · 13/01/2023 11:52

YABU back in my 20s/30s all my friends and anyone when I was out was doing it, it was around a lot, I did do it but not now I stopped a while back

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 13/01/2023 11:54

Cosycover · 13/01/2023 07:18

I doubt that would happen after taking a few lines as a one off.

You don't get cirosis of the liver after a few drinks.

Totally different. Cirrhosis is caused by repeated exposure to alcohol. Coronary artery spasm in response to cocaine can happen any time you take it. It’s a response to the drug you have just taken, not to repeated exposure.

Cocaine is a filthy, dangerous drug. There’s a reason why doctors- who who will take/use pretty much any other dodgy substance- legal or illegal- steer well clear of it.

picklemewalnuts · 13/01/2023 11:57

No.
Warned DS2 about it just recently as he will come across it in his industry. He already knew where it was obviously widespread and where there was little evidence of it. Obviously he 'knows' not to but I wanted to be sure he knew that even sensible, well adjusted, mature people can fall prey to it (distressing DV story on woman's hour).

The sheer conviction that they know 100%

My parents didn't know the half of what I got up to in my 20s, and I hate to break it to those on here who are talking on behalf of their DCs...

...but neither do you.
