Wealthy people don't go to Center Parcs.

Yeahrightthen · 11/01/2023 23:17

This just isn’t true. Even Prince Harry & Megs had to buy furniture from good old IKEA - and they had to pay for it on the ol’ never-never with her credit card - and PC is surely about as wealthy/posh as you can get (even if he is only a spare).

My contribution is that wealthy people are either really tight or really flash (depending on whether they’re old-school or nouveau riche). Old school ones wear moth-eaten cashmere jumpers covered in dog hair and tatty old barbours with wellies and the nouveau ones wear flashy designer togs, have sparkly Rolexes and have lots of plastic surgery.

HangoverSquare · 11/01/2023 23:17

WE (proles) are the aristocracy's perishable items!

SouperNoodle · 11/01/2023 23:17

Wash their hands with soap
Wear shoes outside
Sleep in beds

seineingefrohrenerpimmel · 11/01/2023 23:19

Wealthy people sleep indoors.
I'm about to go to bed - outside, in winter - because I'm not wealthy.

QueenOfThorns · 11/01/2023 23:19

Wealthy people buy brioche rolls and things from Aldi. They seem to have a shelf life of approximately 12 years…

Giggorata · 11/01/2023 23:27

When you say wealthy, do you mean people whose lives are enriched, contentment in small things, better than consumerism, etc, rather than those with assets or cash?

Wetblanket78 · 11/01/2023 23:29

Think she meant imperishable like cereal tinned/packet food and pasta. So they only buy fresh.

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/01/2023 23:31

Jesus don’t ask mn about the wealthy. They’re All manky, with draughty houses and dog hair on clothes of mn narrative is to be believed

whereas my experience of wealthy is
Huge house in London, other property in Cotswold, Cornwall
Interest in object d’art and interior with money to make costly niche purchases
private schools
ski trips
expensive hobbies
gardener, nanny, dog Walker. Agency Chef and silver service for for functions

the mn stereotype is really overwhelmingly inaccurate

Aftersevens · 11/01/2023 23:33

I’m afraid you’re totally wrong.
I’m loaded.
Today I bought a pomegranate. I neither read nor have hobbies as I hire people to do that for me.

JustWhattheDoctorOrdered · 11/01/2023 23:37

@Aftersevens you must be old money. New money people by bucketloads of pomegranates

DustyDood · 11/01/2023 23:41

3 telltale signs that someone is incredibly wealthy:

  • Buys items that come in packets
  • Uses the internet
  • Can speak at least 1 language

How to know you’re skint:

  • Have a favourite colour
  • Listens to music
  • Known by your name
IReallyLikeCrows · 11/01/2023 23:44

All these years of reading like a demon and having other hobbies to boot. I thought that they were things I did because I liked them and could afford them despite being a total povo and all along I was rich! I must go out and spend all that money I don't have now. But not on perishables, obviously.

Tinner01 · 11/01/2023 23:46

A habit shared by all is being fed up of these threads…

stopthebarking · 11/01/2023 23:48

I wonder if OP's comment about "perishable" items was in relation to the opinion I've often seen on MN that wealthy people buy expensive things (clothing, shoes, cars) that tend to be well-made and built to last, rather than cheaper things that "perish"/wear out and have to be replaced relatively quickly...

butterfliedtwo · 11/01/2023 23:48

Bizarre

Lilyhop · 11/01/2023 23:49

I read a lot - I use the local library, and also buy books from the charity shop. I have a hobby- netball.
I have less than £100 in my bank account, certainly not wealthy… though I consider myself ‘rich’ to have a safe home, food on the table and of course my DH, DC… a job I like…. It is more than many people have in the world. 😬

I spy the ability to spell pomegranate.
You wealthy and your bloody educations!

Grows own fingernails
Likes daises
Drinks water

Thanks, QB, I love that .
Mind if I use that sometime in the pub?:
"You stuck up bastard.... I bet you grow your own fingernails!"

JustWhattheDoctorOrdered · 11/01/2023 23:37

Yes, it’s terribly vulgar to buy more than one pomegranate at a time.

VivX · 11/01/2023 23:56

What a gloriously bonkers thread 😂

DustyDood · 11/01/2023 23:57

How to tell if your son is gay:

  • Occasionally folds arms
  • Visits the dentist periodically
  • Likes sandwiches
Pottyaboutplants · 11/01/2023 23:57

confusedcentral5 · 11/01/2023 22:41

I’ve noticed wealthy people don’t have brand new things. They will have antiques and really old stuff they’ve had for years or passed down from wealthy relatives.

They are just the ones wealthy on paper, the ones with the cash flow buy, buy, buy.

If you furnish your house with antique furniture which has passed through the generations, the furniture is much bigger and less practical than the furniture being made today. The likelihood is you will more than likely have a large house to accommodate it. Not many four bed semi d's can house a large table that seats tn or twelve people or large dressing tables. There is a reason that space saving furniture from Ikea is popular!

Naaah. You want to see some of the "serious" ones.

Kennykenkencat · 11/01/2023 23:59

I think not spending on depreciating assets .
