If you needed to leave the country quickly...

And as quietly as possible, where would you start?

Name change and shameless post here for traffic.

Not doing anything illegal such as child abduction. Just may need to leave the country as quickly as possible and return to my home country.

No family here to help, some friends but not sure how much they could assist.

Own house which is mortgaged, car on finance, small loan, credit cards, phone contracts, the usual.

And my job.

House full of possessions I wouldn't really need to take with me.

Where would you begin?

OP posts:

Hust go, asap. Take the cash you have, use credit card debt for more cash.

There are companies that will manage the sale of your house and everything else for you for a small fee. Just go and get yourself out of the situation.

YOU and YOUR BABY are the only important things. The rest is just stuff.

I did this a few years ago at 2 weeks notice.

  1. book maternity leave from next week.
  2. leave an extra set of house keys with a friend/neighbour/work colleague.
  3. book flight for asap checking if you need a fit to fly certificate .
  4. set up a redirect for all mail with the post office for as long as you can, having it go to a mailbox or someone else you trust
  5. pack as much as you can without it being suspicious, pack a bag including all medical information for maternity in Australia
  6. While waiting for when you can go, do some research on storage for all your things. Storage and removals specialists are awesome and work fast - if someone has your keys - they will go in, pack, store within a few hours. They can do this when you are gone as someone else will have a key.
  7. cancel contracts that you can cancel.
  8. go. Go. Go

This is a brilliant list. Do this. Today.

Also yes to being ruthless about your belongings.

Furniture is just stuff, it will suck to leave some things but try to focus on the brand new happy life you'll be creating

Lots of clothes you probably won't need in Australia

Books can be rebought, kitchen stuff you won't need for ages

Try to pack up a few boxes of really important and meaningful things, get some big suitcases to bring with you on the flight. You can arrange later for people to deal with everything else.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 10/01/2023 14:22

I wouldn't ship or store unless anything has huge sentimental value. Leave it furnished. Once sold, ask the buyers to tag anything they want to keep. Everything else, house clearence. Did this with my mums house, cost less £100

Because we're just assuming Op can still fly, because we dont know how pregnant she is. Im hoping she's still good to go.
Im factoring in options so that if it is too late to fly, she doesn't feel trapped and can use a ferry to a safer place and European passports. Always good to have options on passports. Big picture.

She’d have to pick a country that grants rights to all infants born in that country. That’s absolutely not a given. ´Birth tourism’ is a thing and many countries have laws to avoid it - giving birth in France doesn’t make your baby a French citizen for example.

Swissmountains · 10/01/2023 14:22

Make the GP for fitness to fly your first call
Book the flight and then gradually work through the most important details first.

You do have time, try not to panic and stay focused with lists and go through one thing at a time.

We buyanycar or others will buy your car immediately that should raise some funds for other things that are needed.

MynameisJune · 10/01/2023 14:23

You need to give work at least 28 days notice of changing your maternity leave date. So do that today. Then work out annual leave and put that in for before the start of your maternity.

I’m sure If you are more than half way through your PCP period you can hand the car back. So when did you take it out and for how long? Leave the keys with a friend if needed.

Leave a spare house key with a trusted friend, take as much personal stuff as you can get in your suitcases. When you are able hire a firm who will come in and pack your stuff and send it to you or store it for you. Some will even take it to auction for you if you want rid. Then either rent the house out via an agent or sell it whilst you’re in Oz. Come back for a week or so to sign paper work etc but leave baby in Oz.

I would absolutely not risk having my child here with an abusive other parent because you will be stuck.

I'd do this.

postal re-direct

You can re-direct abroad as well :

This is a brilliant list. Do this. Today.

I second that.

You need to just go op. Most if not everything can be sorted out once you are there.

Thoughtful2355 · 10/01/2023 14:24

Do it now.
Sell everything you can ( anything you cant sell take to a charity shop)
Pack a suitcase.
Give the property and keys over to a estate agent and rent it out or get them to sell it / do it all. you can do it all from australia over phone/email. then Run as fast as you can before you give birth prematurely.

Thoughtful2355 · 10/01/2023 14:25

Also yes give maternity in now, dont wait too late to leave the country, give maternity thing in. call in sick if you have to and get everything else done

Phos · 10/01/2023 14:25

Will you be claiming employer maternity pay because if you're not planning to come back they could require you to pay it back? And you probably won't be eligible for SMP once you've relocated either.

Ok we do know, she said March.

But again, how does NI help? It's no different to having the baby where she is now. It doesn't help with passport options, and that isn't the point anyway, she needs to have the baby in her home country.

It isn’t because in the UK you can’t change your mat leave start date without 4 weeks notice unless the employer agrees.

emmathedilemma · 10/01/2023 14:26

Self-certify yourself off sick (with stress) for a week to give yourself chance to work things out? Would your GP sign you off as sick if you can't change your maternity leave start date? Your first research needs to be airline flight policies though as you're rapidly running out of time to get to Oz.

sueelleker · 10/01/2023 14:27

LeavesOnTrees · 10/01/2023 13:49

I would pack up the house straightaway and arrange a shipping company to ship all the belongings you want to keep back to Aus.
The rest to charity shops, furniture charity places that pick up, or thrown away.

Then find an estate agent, give them the keys and put the house on the market empty.

You can then leave with the house unsold and do it from afar.

You'll need a solicitor for the house sale but again, this can be done from afar.

Definitely leave well in advance for the airline, when boarding the plane don't make it obvious you're heavily pregnant - trick from my dr when I was pregnant and wanted to go on a summer holiday !

Several charities do house clearance.

inwiththerosemary · 10/01/2023 14:28

You can voluntarily terminate your car on PCP if you're around half way through your finance agreement. Basically just means handing the car back without penalty, you could just sign the cancellation document and hand the car and keys to the dealership or leave with a friend to hand back if BCA want to fetch it.

GloomyDarkness · 10/01/2023 14:29

It isn’t because in the UK you can’t change your mat leave start date without 4 weeks notice unless the employer agrees.

See if they agree and if they don't go from there - and there may be some implications if she does leave the country she'd have to look that up ie might need to re-pay possibly (?) -next step be phoning in sick or being very honest that she need to leave the country and get home as soon as possible.

AlbertaAnnie · 10/01/2023 14:30

Sell house through a quick sale service ( same with car) start mat leave today and book plane ticket asap you won’t have long to get on a plane

SeaToSki · 10/01/2023 14:30

Go to the doctor and get a fit to fly and get signed off with stress

Call work and change your maternity leave to asap

Book a flight and pay for as many extra bags as they will take

Use credit card to pay a company to clear your house (you can pay it off when your house sells)

Hand back car

Instruct estate agent

Instruct solicitor to sell house on the basis that they will be paid from the proceeds, explain about bathroom and that it is ‘as is’ and you will take a lower price for a quick sale

Get on the plane and deal with everything else on the phone from Aus

It might be painful to leave some stuff behind, but less painful than dealing with an abusive ex just round the corner

purplefacemask · 10/01/2023 14:31

36 weeks will be the latest you can fly, but with some airlines it's earlier

Villagetoraiseachild · 10/01/2023 14:34

Ah, didnt see the March detail. Assuming she is fit to fly, great and fabulous.
Am here in the spirit of supporting Op,.

sueelleker · 10/01/2023 14:36

If it's too late to fly, is there any chance of going by sea?

RedCarsGoFaster · 10/01/2023 14:36

Ref the PCP, contact your company and ask for a price to end the contract this month. They can calculate it.

If you go home to Oz, where do you stand on the costs of medical care, having the baby, entitlement to benefits etc? Where will you live? Do you plan to remain in Oz to raise the baby? If you stayed in the UK could your baby have dual citizenship or would it make life more complicated if you wanted to moved home after the birth?

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 10/01/2023 14:37

This is the quantas guideline for flying when pregnant for flights over 4 hrs. It might be worth checking with all the airlines you might fly with. Don't leave it to close to the limit though as there may be delays/flight cancellations

help.qantas.com/support/s/article/Requirements-for-flying-whilst-pregnant#:~:text=What%20are%20the%20requirements%20for%20flying%20whilst%20pregnant%3F&text=You%20can%20travel%20up%20to,multiple%20pregnancies%20(e.g.%20twins).&text=You%20can%20travel%20up%20to%20the%20end%20of%20the%2040th,36th%20week%20for%20multiple%20pregnancies.

You can travel up to the end of the 36th week for single pregnancies and the end of the 32nd week for multiple pregnancies (e.g. twins).
