If you needed to leave the country quickly...

And as quietly as possible, where would you start?

Name change and shameless post here for traffic.

Not doing anything illegal such as child abduction. Just may need to leave the country as quickly as possible and return to my home country.

No family here to help, some friends but not sure how much they could assist.

Own house which is mortgaged, car on finance, small loan, credit cards, phone contracts, the usual.

And my job.

House full of possessions I wouldn't really need to take with me.

Where would you begin?

Can you sell the house fully furnished? Might be good if it’s a typical “first time buyers” type of house

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 11/01/2023 18:37

If you live not too far from the tip, I would just shove it in binbags and take there.

@PegasusReturns She paid £23,000 for her car.

The car “cost” £23k. OP put down a £5k deposit and the rest is being paid via PCP.

ICanHideButICantRun · 11/01/2023 21:41

Yes but you can't cancel a PCP until you've paid at least 50% of it, including interest.

TerraNostra · 11/01/2023 22:24

Do let us know when you are safely in Oz OP. All the best.

mathanxiety · 12/01/2023 03:58

Don't get trapped by the sunken costs fallacy.

Don't wait until you're emotionally able to draw a line under all your possessions and your dreams either.

Your priority has to be getting safely to Oz before the baby is born.

You need to get a fitness to travel document from your HCP. Look up airline requirements for this.

You need a one way ticket. Max out your credit if necessary to get that ticket.

You can sort out everything, 100% of the house, the belongings, and your debts/property you're paying off from OZ.

Agapornis · 12/01/2023 07:54

Do you have any friends who could live in your house? E.g. currently renting and looking to save up. They could be lodgers on paper so no buy to let agreement needed, and hopefully they'll need your furniture.

I assume your point is that she cannot cancel the PCP unilaterally under the Voluntary Termination clause in the CCA. I agree.

That’s is why I am suggesting she sell the car back to the garage and then settle the agreement early. Cars have held their value remarkably well over the past year and given the 22% deposit she put down she is likely to wed up with cash in her pocket after the PCP has been paid off.

That said, her priority should be to leave the country ASAP, I wouldn’t advise spending more than a day or two trying to sort this and in any event only if the money is critical.

PurveyPigHamlet · 22/01/2023 17:42

Hope you're OK and all sorted and safe @need2escape

I agree with people about going for a quick sale. The price can accommodate the unfinished bathroom, and you can price for a buyer with no chain for speed. Appoint an understanding estate agent and solicitor, to whom the keys can be entrusted. The stress of quickly leaving the country, then resettling broad would be enough to cope with, without the addition of rental issues as a landlord. Get what you want to keep boxed up, crated up for sending to Australia. Charity/rubbish bagged up, get a skip for the rubbish just for a day, unless you're sure he would not be informed about it. Decide what to do with furniture, ship, charity or house clearance bod.Get cleaners in for leaving day, once you are down to suitcases. Do it all asap as the further you progress into pregnancy the more difficult it will all be.

BornBlonde · 22/01/2023 19:35

I think as abuse is involved going back to Aus & having family support seems sensible. No advice but wanted to wish you luck Star

rothbury · 22/01/2023 19:42

I agree you should get to Australia asap and worry about selling the house later. If you leave it too late to be able to fly, you could be in a fix. Good luck.

lieselotte · 23/01/2023 16:48

I hope you are ok OP and safely in Australia.

Okunevo · 17/02/2023 21:02

YearoftheRabbit23 · 30/08/2023 08:16

OP, hope all worked out smoothly for you in the end! Hope you and baby are enjoying life in Australia!

lieselotte · 30/08/2023 10:16

I was also thinking about this recently - hope you are ok OP!
