To be sick of cashless society

Ihatepcos · 10/01/2023 09:31

I prefer to use cash, I always have.

I find budgeting and spending so much easier. If I am tapping away on my card I think nothing of constant £3 £6 etc being spent on things I probably wouldn't buy if I was spending cash.

More and more places simply don't take cash and it's driving me mad.

Just flip it round; sounds like your own psychology about it. When you're spending on your card just imagine it's cash and stop and think before you tap.

Manicwithmoney · 10/01/2023 09:35

YANBU ... I hate the cashless society system

IDontCareMatthew · 10/01/2023 09:35

Well it's not going to change

Saves money to reduce cash use. So makes sense

Zippedydoo123 · 10/01/2023 09:35

Not where I live.

Why should I have to though? I'm happy using cash and all of a sudden places won't accept ot

YANBU.

So many people argue for a cashless society without thinking about the implications it has on the most vulnerable.

It also costs many small businesses to take card payments whereas you keep all the cash you make.

I was happy riding a horse everywhere and suddenly it’s all cars this and cars that

Because plenty of businesses don’t want to handle cash anymore. It’s a security risk. They are happy to lose your custom as a result. If you are not happy being restricted in where you can shop, it’s you that needs to change.

georgiesmash · 10/01/2023 09:38

I was happy using a quil and ink, now people want emails

Because this isn't about cash or not really it's about your own self control on spending basically. There's lots of reasons places don't take cash anymore - it is risky for robberies, it takes time and money taking it to the bank, it can be fake, it can go missing/be stolen, it can fuel money laundering etc etc. Nothing the same can be said of card transactions so thats why cash gets shelved. Not much you can do about it except to change your own spending habits around it.

DiDonk · 10/01/2023 09:41

Get a second account at one of the internet only banks with a new card.

Send your weekly money to that account and only take that card with you.

We do this for budgeting and it works really well. Main account just hills and mortgage.

Getoff · 10/01/2023 09:41

If you're relying on running out of pieces of paper to control your spending, just carry your spending budget for a period in cash, then when you tap, transfer the equivalent amount of cash from your "spending" stash to a "spent" stash. At the end of the week or month you can recycle the pieces of paper in your "spent" stash back into the "spending" stash.

Mrsjayy · 10/01/2023 09:42

Where doesn't accept cash ?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 10/01/2023 09:43

I love it. No more realising that you haven't got change for the bus or looking for a cashpoint or scrabbling in the kids' moneyboxes because of some random school collection. Cashless works well for the disorganised.

bloodyplanes · 10/01/2023 09:44

I only accept cash in my business and there are lots of people who do it this way!

Forestwalks · 10/01/2023 09:44

I use cash 99% of the time. I only pay on my card if I really want the item and they don’t except cash.
Has helped save money and also made me shop less in the big chains. Don’t go pizza express/Pizza Hut anymore instead go to a independent Italian restaurant if we fancy a pizza.
Our greggs went card only for a time near us so we started using a different bakers down the road. They now except cash again but we haven’t gone back.

Cash does seem to be being used more where we are. Tesco put in more tills that are card only before Christmas. There are only 4 tills that take cash and about 20 that take card only. The card ones are empty while the cash tills have a very long queue. Same in wilko, card only tills empty everyone queueing for cash tills.

Overandunderit · 10/01/2023 09:44

I hate computers, I prefer my typewriter and going to libraries.

But seriously, it's not going to change so you'll have to. PPs suggestion about getting a second card like Monzo/Revolut is a good one. That way you can transfer over only what you'd like to spend and manage your budget that way.

Where doesn't accept cash ?

I don't know a single shop that takes cash now, even bars and restaurants don't

JamSandle · 10/01/2023 09:44

Yanbu. It has pros but also many cons.

Zippedydoo123 · 10/01/2023 09:45

Our local McDonald's is card on ly but most shops still use cash here.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/01/2023 09:45

I agree OP. I have no doubt that removing the option to use cash makes it easier to overspend, especially on a tight budget.

That's not true. The costs of processing cash have rocketed and in some cases it's costing businesses more than card payments. Businesses act in the best interests so if it were in their interest to accept cash, they would.

HelloJan · 10/01/2023 09:48

YABU
Cash is so last century. I'm glad I don't have to carry around a thick wallet with all the notes and coins anymore.

stopringingme · 10/01/2023 09:49

I prefer using cash when out and about and have so far not found a shop that doesn't take cash, I would go elsewhere if it was card only.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2023 09:49

I love it. I never have any cash on me.
No waiting for change (or chance of getting the wrong change) or handling dirty notes and coins.
