To be sick of cashless society

I prefer to use cash, I always have.

I find budgeting and spending so much easier. If I am tapping away on my card I think nothing of constant £3 £6 etc being spent on things I probably wouldn't buy if I was spending cash.

More and more places simply don't take cash and it's driving me mad.

I hate places that require cash. There is a great system in India where most people and most restaurants etc have a QR code they can scan and it immediately transfers money, it's brilliant and so much easier than setting up a new payee, wish something like that came in over here and got enough people using it.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2023 10:45

I have had a card not work (for no apparent reason) about twice in my whole life. I used another card, but generally the shop can save the transaction while you go and get cash/another means of payment.
7 times seems an awful lot.

AlmondBake · 10/01/2023 10:45

I always carry some cash. Off the top of my head for things like -

  • tipping the hairdresser
  • paying a young neighbour for odd jobs
  • buying the Big Issue
  • car parking (having been scammed at a ticket machine)
  • buying raffle tickets at social events
  • giving pocket money to young relatives
PuttingDownRoots · 10/01/2023 10:45

A few months ago I was in Asda when the whole card system went down... it was chaos. I had only just started my shopping so left but those will full trolleys had to leave them in a queue to join the queue for the two cash machines. This is one of those superstores, not just Local type with just small amounts of food

sanityisamyth · 10/01/2023 10:45

Quite happy with cashless. I can go out which just my phone in one hand and my keys in the other. I hate carrying bags and other crap around with me.

I work on a supermarket checkout, and we're certainly not cashless.
We have two 'card only' tills (which, despite three very obvious notices, and us asking if they're paying by card, people still try to pay cash) and about four on self scan. The rest take both cash and cards.
The amount of people who pull out wads of cash (I'm talking up to an inch thick in £20 notes in some cases) is unbelievable. I've been handed up to £300 in banknotes on several occasions.
And when l 'cash up' to go on a break, or at the end of my shift, there can very easily be a very substantial amount of money in there.
A cashless society may be coming, but it's not here yet. Certainly not in Yorkshire anyway.

You have to wonder why people are waking around with so much cash, and whether it's been declared....

You only wash your car twice a year?!😬

Caught me!

Yes. I live in muddy Lincolnshire and so it's always bloody filthy. Mostly I hose it down on the drive but twice a year I 'treat' myself to a inside/outside clean at the local wash. To get rid of the thick layer of mud inside the car, from too many muddy dog walks Grin

Wexone · 10/01/2023 10:46

I am bad with money always have been but am improving all the time. What has really helped me is revolute. You can put money by in different areas so its hidden from me. Every time i pay i get notification of what i spent and what my balance is. Full details of my transactions can be seen on the app. Can be saved to my google pay so no need to bring my purse now. Also its great now i pay my cleaner and the dog groomer with it- previously this was cash, it was a huge effort to remember to get cash and the find somewhere to take it out. It so much easier. It drives me wrong now when you get to somewhere and they don't take card. Especially car parks, our local supermarket is getting complaints very day as their car park ( owned by a separate company) doesn't take card. So you have to go all the way upstairs take 10 or 20e out of ATM go to the checkout get it cashed and go back downstairs in order for put 1e in the car park machine or you will get clamped.
Card machines are not that dear anymore. You can prefer to use cash but just don't expect the rest of the world to prefer it

AppleIsMyName · 10/01/2023 10:47

I have 2 debit cards and 1 credit card, plus they're all on apple pay.

There has never been a time where all 4 options ceased to work and I regretted not having cash with me 😂

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2023 10:47

This has all reminded me of this sign put up in an Iceland store-people are filthy!

Haveagentlechristmas · 10/01/2023 10:48

Once I was not allowed to pay for a single apple costing 40p with cash on a cashless university campus. I had just ordered a new card so was without a card. Bonkers.

But, apparently, they would accept cash that had previously been in people's mouths, bras etc 😂

80s · 10/01/2023 10:49

Agree that it is nicer when you are self-limiting spending in that way, but rather than moaning about the cashless society (which is here to stay) we should be moaning "Why isn't there a card/app/technology that recreates these benefits of cash?" - someone would come up with one pretty quick.

In the meantime, could you set up a "cash" account that has a limited amount of money in it, so that you don't use it as casually? I have this, and when it goes below different levels it sends me a message saying so, so I never feel like there's an endless supply! It's not a neat method but it's something at least.

Even whole EPOS can come down and then even cash is useless. Happened at one of my jobs regularly.

Exactly-who wants to put that in their purse? Yuk.

Witsendwilly · 10/01/2023 10:51

I haven’t used cash for anything since the first lockdown. Not a single thing. Why would I?

Those going on about system failures or cards failing I have never seen this happen. Sometimes you hit you contactless limit and need to put the pin in but that’s it. I just checked and I have done over 150 contactless transactions in 2023 so far with zero issues.

If there was an issue with my main card, which is linked to my phone and watch, then I would just use the current account card.

the main one I use is Revolut and it tracks all my spending by sector and vendor and auto tops up by £50 from the current account whenever the balance drops below £100.

Every transaction pings up on my phone (normally before it’s even gone through the till) so if anyone were to use my account without me knowing I just block the card there and the from the app.

Every online transaction uses a different and disposable card number so my details are never stored anywhere. What’s not to like?

Personally I think the UK should have used the death of the queen as an excuse to massively cut back the cash in circulation.

I also pay for a lot of stuff in crypto, but I guess that will completely freak out those who still like dirty bits of paper that are expensive for businesses to handle!

pishkashalante · 10/01/2023 10:52

I always have plenty of cash on me (fivers/tenners/pound coins) as well as Apple Pay on my phone.

Cash comes in very useful, I've picked dup some amazing bargains which just would not have been possibe with a debit card.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2023 10:53

If in the unlikely event I want to buy anything from a cash only shop, I would just go and get some out.

MagnificentDelurker · 10/01/2023 10:53

Face2facet · 10/01/2023 09:38

Because plenty of businesses don’t want to handle cash anymore. It’s a security risk. They are happy to lose your custom as a result. If you are not happy being restricted in where you can shop, it’s you that needs to change.

They should as cash is still a legal tender.

katseyes7 · 10/01/2023 10:54

Talking of cashless..... as a supermarket checkout operator, the amount of people who just naively assume that their card will work, day in, day out, is astonishing.
There is security in place by banks, whereby if you use your card a certain amount of times, in a certain period if time, that contactless won't work, and you'll be asked to put your card in the reader and use your PIN.
"Why's it doing that? There's money in there?"
"Why do you want me to do that?" (It's not me personally. It's your bank)
"I don't know my PIN! Can't you sort it out?"
Trying to get some people to understand that it's a security measure by your bank is like herding cats. I'd rather be secure in the knowledge that if l lost my debit card, there were only a limited amount of times someone could use it before being asked for a PIN. It's to stop the thief emptying your bank account.
One woman held up the entire queue making FOUR telephone calls to family trying to find out her PIN.
If it's over £100, you need your PIN anyway, contactless won't work. Ditto your phone, unless it's Apple pay, where the limit is £250.
People turn up with just their phone, then shout at the poor soul sitting on the till because their shopping's over the limit, and the system won't accept their payment. Is it really too much effort to have your card with you?
We've had customers with huge trolleys of shopping when their phone payments didn't work, or they 'didn't know' their PIN. We have to suspend the transaction, print a receipt, and put the trolley in the cold store while they go home for a physical card (and in a lot of cases, find out what their PIN is).
That's our fault too. Apparently....

SebastiansLeg · 10/01/2023 10:55

I hate cash, dirty, unwashed hands from people who have just had a piss and not washed their hands and then they handle money. Absolutely disgusting.

Monzo allows you to put money in pots. It is what my son who is at uni does. He gets an allowance from me and then divides that into different pots for supermarket, other food, treats, travel etc.

The app is on his phone (and mine which is how I pay him) so you can see instantly how much is left in each pot after you have tapped your card.

Applying for one is easy if you have either a passport or driving license as you can do it from home and they send you a card through the post. Most Monzo account holders use it as a second account. I have accounts with 3 different bank accounts just in case one ever goes down online I still have access to money.

iwanttobelikegracekelly · 10/01/2023 10:57

Do people really not see the problems with cashless?
What you are sleepwalking into, for that tiny bit more 'convenience?
Some people still value their privacy.

Badbadbunny · 10/01/2023 10:57

Ihatepcos · 10/01/2023 09:51

Those of you who are basically saying 'get with the times' do you never have any need for cash?

No, struggling to think of anything.

The main one is having a pot of change in the car for car park machines, but the car parks we tend to use have "pay on exit" machines which take cards, so struggling to remember the last time we used a "pay & display" car park where cash was needed.

Our window cleaner leaves a note with his bank details on and wants paying by bank transfer. Our "corner shop" are happy to take cards with no minimum spend.

I do have a couple of notes in my mobile phone case "just in case" but can't remember the last time I needed them - must be a few months ago.

RaraRachael · 10/01/2023 10:57

My OH works in a place where they still take cash, but when it comes to "banking" the cash, they can't as all the banks in the town have closed. So they end up with thousands of pounds on the premises. Card only payments would be so much easier but I suppose some people still want to live in the past,
