To be sick of cashless society

I prefer to use cash, I always have.

I find budgeting and spending so much easier. If I am tapping away on my card I think nothing of constant £3 £6 etc being spent on things I probably wouldn't buy if I was spending cash.

More and more places simply don't take cash and it's driving me mad.

Just flip it round; sounds like your own psychology about it. When you're spending on your card just imagine it's cash and stop and think before you tap.

Yes, you need to budget according to what you spend, however that is. I use a spreadsheet and stick every transaction on it.

I rarely have cash, it has to be said.

I didn't realise there were so many cash haters!

I prefer cashless. Don't even need your purse anymore just phone. With banking app, I can see what ive spent. I work in a supermarket with both but hate it when someone gives me loads of notes, takes ages to put in the counter cash. Then someone has to count the tills up to check they are right every now and again. There is one cafe here that is cash only that we use regularly, but there is a cash machine in the spar right by it thankfully, otherwise they'd lose me as a customer and probably many others too.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2023 10:01

My banking App sends me a notification every time anything goes in or out of the account, you can look at any time and see your balance.
it certainly doesn’t feel like I’m not ‘spending’ by using cards.

I'm not sure it's a case of hating cash, more accepting there are reasons for changes, and adapting with them so you don't drive yourself mad.

Chwo · 10/01/2023 10:01

It also costs many small businesses to take card payments whereas you keep all the cash you make.

I work in a butchers PT that went cashless not too long ago because it was costing too much. Takes man hours to do cash, especially when so many banks are closing or awkward times. The card payment costs ended up being better and easier all around for the owner, as whoever is on doesn't have to waste time doing float etc.

Cuppasoupmonster · 10/01/2023 10:02

How could anyone hate it?! No need to carry change or count it out, just tap and done, faster more hygienic and no annoying trips to cash points

I am so glad to read this. Used to work in a bank and the local butchers used to pay in cash every other day. Meaty notes anyone? 🤮

Not needing something is not the same as hating it.

I don't hate it. I just don't see any advantages to it. Tbh I've moved beyond cards now and just use contactless on my phone for 99% of transactions.

Those of you who are basically saying 'get with the times' do you never have any need for cash?

Only for the town market for fruit once a week and food places who don’t accept card which is only if I eat out and that’s a few times a year. These places have to be really good though for me to seek out an atm to get cash out.

You obviously have seen all of the hundreds of previous threads on this subject, no one on here appears to ever use cash whereas in the real world I see it everytime I go to the shops

Demographics play a big part I think as a lot on here are London/large city centric

The only cash I need is to pay for my son, usually non school uniform days and beavers subs and frankly it's a PITA especially when you have to withdraw £10 then get it changed so he can go to school with £1.

Even buskers use contactless these days.

But I do understand it's a big shift for some to move from cash to card and takes a bit of getting used to. I have got my 6 year old a prepaid hyperjar card to get him used to managing his cashless money. He can set up different pots so he can split what he spends and saves and set limits on where he can spend each pot of cash. Maybe that's something you could look into for places that no longer take cash?

Jazz12 · 10/01/2023 10:08

God yes! There is more control on cash. You can’t spend what you don’t have. We have £4K on our credit card, just spent on pointless stuff . we are now moving to a joint account debit cards for spending, so fed up.

PuggyMum · 10/01/2023 10:09

I agree.

I like to have the option. I hate paying on card for small amounts as it is easy to lose track.

I work in a team where we consider consumer vulnerability and on this site where there are many threads about people fleeing domestic abuse and the advice is to squirrel away cash.

When you do use cash half the time people can't even work out the change!

There are too many cons for a cashless society for me and unfortunately there are too many 'I'm alright Jack' people that can't see it.

bloodyplanes · 10/01/2023 09:44

I only accept cash in my business and there are lots of people who do it this way!

I give these places a wide berth, such a hassle to get to an ATM.

I get paid my salary into my bank account, why should I have to wander round town looking for an ATM and usually you only find one that charges!

Squirespot · 10/01/2023 10:10

Same old argument, cash has had it's day, no more standing behind people faffing with 2ps trying to pay the bill!

Ping, card done, move on!

ok, but realistically, unless I've got $100's of cash to hand, which I wouldn't, that will literally give me a day's grace before I run out of money. I've still got no way of getting more cash if my bank account is frozen. I reckon the average cash carrier only has 20/30 quid on them at a time.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2023 09:49

I love it. I never have any cash on me.
No waiting for change (or chance of getting the wrong change) or handling dirty notes and coins.

Omg I was behind someone the other day who wanted to pay in EXACT cash (coins) and had no problem holding everyone up as they slid it towards the cashier one by one. Wearing a big smile like they were doing them a favour

CosyFanTucci · 10/01/2023 10:12

Cashless makes so much more sense. Every payment is recorded so I know what I spent and where. I don’t have to handle cash or get a handful of coins for change. The only times I can think where I need change is sometimes for parking meters, road tolls and putting air into my cars’ tyres.
Cash is only going to get less common so you may as well adapt.

Ihatepcos · 10/01/2023 09:51

No. Used to be an issue with parking but even now thankfully there are apps to pay online.

Itschristmastimeinthecity · 10/01/2023 10:13

I love it me. I've not touched cash and how long.
In fact I've not even touched my debit card in how long? My phone is my payment everywhere I go.
Don't even know my pin number, had to write it in notes on my phone to remind me just in case I need it.
I just love the ease of it all.

ChaToilLeam · 10/01/2023 10:13

I agree with you. I don’t want my every transaction to be recorded, no matter what it is. What happens if your account is made unavailable, through mishap, fraud or other more worrisome reasons?

Recently in my country there was a failure in the card system software and many businesses were not able to take card payments until it was fixed, which took a few days. Businesses had to go back to taking cash.
