To be sick of cashless society

I prefer to use cash, I always have.

I find budgeting and spending so much easier. If I am tapping away on my card I think nothing of constant £3 £6 etc being spent on things I probably wouldn't buy if I was spending cash.

More and more places simply don't take cash and it's driving me mad.

Why should I have to though? I'm happy using cash and all of a sudden places won't accept ot

Because the world moves on. You either keep up and embrace the changes or you stick to what you like and accept being inconvenienced.

There have always been luddites moaning about changes but that's just the nature of the world. Do you genuinely expect everyone in the world to pander to your specific preferences?

Hankunamatata · 10/01/2023 10:14

I prefer it. Iv 3 different cards for different spending. My bank send me notification and balance everytime I spend. So much easier to keep track and budget

Itschristmastimeinthecity · 10/01/2023 10:14

And for the poster that asked if we never need cash, the answer is NO. I literally never need cash 😂

AmazonsFuckedUpFreeMusicFeature · 10/01/2023 10:14

My small business waa burglered number of times... While it costs a bit on card system, you can get good deals from pay providers, it made my life easier well before covid. Didn't have to keep lugging change from bank, didn't have to walk around with takings, or risking losing them in burglary etc.
Overal, except Amex, it was easier....

I agree with you. I don’t want my every transaction to be recorded, no matter what it is. What happens if your account is made unavailable, through mishap, fraud or other more worrisome reasons?

Recently in my country there was a failure in the card system software and many businesses were not able to take card payments until it was fixed, which took a few days. Businesses had to go back to taking cash.

What happens if you are mugged and your cash gets stolen? What happens if the ATM stops working and you can't get cash out?

I give these places a wide berth, such a hassle to get to an ATM.

I get paid my salary into my bank account, why should I have to wander round town looking for an ATM and usually you only find one that charges!

YANBU but I personally find the opposite to be true. If I have cash, once I break a tenner for something, for example, I will spend the rest of the change without thinking. I much prefer being able to track transactions to the penny.

I didn't realise there were so many cash haters!

It's also really dirty Grin

Those of you who are basically saying 'get with the times' do you never have any need for cash?

Stash of £20s for the window cleaner and a £1 coin for swimming locker. That's it. Rarely carry a bag at all since the pandemic.

It’s expensive for places to accept cash these days.

why should they when there are easier and cheaper alternatives available to them?

Hankunamatata · 10/01/2023 10:17

Though wish ypu could get terminals that don't cost so much as we need one for our small charity sports club shop but I think then the shop wouldn't make any profit.

God yes! There is more control on cash. You can’t spend what you don’t have. We have £4K on our credit card, just spent on pointless stuff . we are now moving to a joint account debit cards for spending, so fed up.

It is still based on choices though. It was a choice to get a credit card and a choice to spend £4K on pointless stuff. It’s the way you choose to see it whether one has more control over the other.

Not needing something is not the same as hating it.

This ^^

Card payments are easier, often cheaper for the business, quicker and so much more convenient for the vast majority of the population. Yes some people prefer cash but they are in the minority and businesses are sensible to cater to the majority of the population.

I honestly cannot remember when I last used cash. Card payments make things so much easier and have the added bonus that I'm not being charged for taking my own money out of an atm.

Honestly can't think of any time I need cash. All the tedious times of needing cash for parking, phone calls have all got a cashless solution.

I've always found that if I take cash when I got out I spend it all and often have no idea what I did with it. I have lost cash or sometimes mislaid and found it only ages later.

The big bonus to cashless is that I can see the transactions so I have a record of what I have spent.

SmartWatch · 10/01/2023 10:19

I have to give one of my son's a pound coin every day for school snack, other than that I have zero requirement for cash anymore. I personaly prefer it as I must have lost thousands in dropped 10 pound notes over the years!

I do understand the arguments people make for having cash, if that's what they prefer so I think businesses should really accept both. At some point though you have to go with the majority, but I don't think we're tehre yet.

crackofdoom · 10/01/2023 10:20

It's all fine and convenient until the Internet goes down, or there wasn't any in the first place (the amount of beach car parks down here in Cornwall that sadistically have the number for a parking app on the side of their pay and display machines, when presumably whoever installed them knows full well that there's no signal there whatsoever 😬)

Or, in that dystopian future world where the powers that be are able to instantly shut funds off for whomever they deem to be unworthy, a la The Handmaid's Tale. It might sound far fetched, but I gather the Chinese system has already taken several steps down the road towards this.

YANBU.

So many people argue for a cashless society without thinking about the implications it has on the most vulnerable.

It also costs many small businesses to take card payments whereas you keep all the cash you make.

It costs a similar amount dealing with cash.
Increased insurance premiums for having cash on the premises , staffing costs for cashing up and banking said cash, cost to bank cash and buy change, not to mention the safety of the staff due to robbery of cash

Because the world is moving on. Adapt or die.......

Mushroo · 10/01/2023 10:22

I honestly can’t remember the last time I used cash. The only issue recently was trying to get chips at the seaside - so I went to a different chippy that took card.

I pay my cleaner via bank transfer, even money in Christmas cards I wrote a nice message and did a bank transfer. Everywhere here, even local markets and small traders take card (Manchester).

If my friends and I go out to dinner, we all Monzo the split to one person, who will pay then pay the entire bill.

Why would i faff about going to cash machine (and having to take out a specific amount) when I don’t have to.

Also if I have cash I risk losing it / being robbed. With a card I can freeze it instantly.

Even for businesses, generally there are lots of pros. yes you have to pay for the technology,
but:

  • more customers (I wouldn’t shop somewhere that doesn’t take card).
  • no paying someone to cash up and take the money to a bank
  • it’s quicker to do each transaction
  • no need to keep a float
  • less risk of transactions being cashed up incorrectly
  • cashless means lower insurance
  • lower risk of robbery
  • staff don’t have to handle unclean money
As a society, less risk of people doing things ‘off the books’ to evade tax.

Charity can get discounts. I would check around. I believe paypal does charity discounts on their payment systems.

PurpleButterflyWings · 10/01/2023 10:23

Who says it's cashless? Confused I frequently use cash. Where are you if there is no cash? On the Starship Enterprise in 2266?

Bensteeth · 10/01/2023 10:25

Think of all the people who don’t wash their hands when they go to the toilet, and then consider how many people will have handled the cash before you.
I am admittedly a bit of a germaphobe but I don’t know anyone who would be happy to handle something that they knew was contaminated with (likely multiple peoples) faeces, but no one seems to think about it with cash. I’ll use it when I have to, but never by choice.
