To find Michael Mosley annoying

I can’t stand him. He seems too patronising and slimey.
He and his wife are money grabbing.
He invents a new part of his diet every year to try to sell more books when they’re all a rehash of the last. 5-2 /sugar free/clever guts/ new 5-2/ fast 800/fast 800 easy/fast 800 Keto. The Keto recipe book by his wife has some meals where a portion is over 20g of carb - that’s not Keto. He’s always saying not to have sweetener yet it’s in his milkshakes. He says about processed foods and then brings out a processed powdered mushroom soup. Now it’s diet season he’s bloody everywhere. Am I the only one who doesn’t like him?

He is a businessman. Making money is what businessman do. I don’t mind him but I also understand your feelings.

Stellaris22 · 09/01/2023 11:06

Can't stand him, every year he has a 'diet' to promote in the Daily Mail.

shreddies · 09/01/2023 11:10

I know what you mean, I find him a bit annoying, but agree he has made a very successful business

FictionalCharacter · 09/01/2023 11:16

I can’t stand him. Can’t watch his tv programmes. All the crappy books and “new miracle” diets wouldn’t be such an issue if he was just the typical celebrity “diet guru” out to make money. What pisses me off is that as he’s a doctor who used to make serious programmes about health, this gives credibility to his stupid diet books.

Kinnorafron · 09/01/2023 11:16

YANBU - I have no clue if he's right about stuff but everything he advocates as a way to improve my health seems to be designed to make my life miserable.

watchfulwishes · 09/01/2023 11:17

I can't understand why you are so hostile. If you don't warm to him, just ignore. His research and programmes are pretty interesting to lots of people.
I don't know how many books he's done because I don't read/buy any of them.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/01/2023 11:20

I was just pondering the other day, when he popped up with the latest instalment in his diet empire, that he must have made SERIOUS £££££ in the last few years since he jumped on the intermittent fasting bandwagon. He used to be a GP that popped up on docs, and now he's a mover and shaker in the diet industry.

HaroldTheStallion · 09/01/2023 11:21

I do see what you're saying but I do think he has made some really good scientifically sound recommendations over the years, and especially when he first came to prominence, that have helped me. He does just seem to be milking it now, though. He did an AMA on here a few years ago. I asked him why he was involved with the hateful daily mail and he didn't answer me.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 09/01/2023 11:27

Reminds me of "Dr" Gillian McKeith a bit. She started flogging all sorts of supplement shite, including weight loss/detox cleanse sachets that cost a bomb.

There's no such thing as a detox cleanse. That's what your liver is there for!

JudgeRudy · 09/01/2023 11:29

I've definitely noticed that the more mainstream he has become the more he dumbs down. An hour 'documentary/educational' programme probably has less than 5mins of useful content. His podcasts aren't so bad....but maybe coz I can't see him!

He's never been a GP - he got into health journalism pretty quickly after training as a psychiatrist.

I will be forever grateful to him for his 2012 program on intermittent fasting - which introduced the 5:2 method for weight loss. I was on the original, and long standing, MN thread on it.

Totally life changing for me. lost about 34lb, I have never yo-yo'd since. Nice stable weight, all the clothes in my wardrobe fit me. BMI 21 so I don't need any of his new weight loss products - but I hope they are of use to others.

I watch anything else he does with interest - I like the way he distills the latest science.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/01/2023 11:30

Okay I got that wrong. I always though he was a GP who did paid gigs on BBC health docs.

Aeroflot21 · 09/01/2023 11:31

I’m in two minds here - I really like the programmes he’s made on health (he’s done lots of stuff for the BBC) and find his advice there very helpful. He’s also got these short programmes that he presents called Just One Thing, which I think give very accessible health advice that is also achievable. Also really like his focus on the importance of gut health.

I agree with PP that I don’t really like the relentless way that he flogs his books and products etc, but as PP have said, he’s also a businessman and that’s what he’s got to do to make money, I guess.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 09/01/2023 11:32

Oh god, just having a coffee break and put Radio 4 on. He’s bloody well on there too! 😂

AnUnlikelyPairing · 09/01/2023 11:32

YANBU. He doesn't actually have any expertise in diet but is constantly trying to sell books/fads to make money. It feels very slimy and unprofessional.

EarlyYearsMe · 09/01/2023 11:32

I’m a bit of a hypocrite to be honest because I do get on well with intermittent fasting, which I discovered because of him, but his wife’s recipe book for the fast 800 diet were awful.

Cherry60 · 09/01/2023 11:33

I enjoyed his TV stuff early on, found it very interesting, but went off him when he first promoted the 5:2 diet as a way you could eat what you wanted on the 5 days then backpedalled to say you still needed to follow diet rules on those days if you wanted to lose weight.

Mischance · 09/01/2023 11:37

This is what the "off" button is for!

Georgyporky · 09/01/2023 11:38

I don't like him, so I simply don't watch him.

Notjustanymum · 09/01/2023 11:50

I find his recipe books helpful for controlling weight and diabetes. I think he has brought about a revolution in dietary excellence, and don’t care if he’s making lots of money off the back of it, as he’s probably single-handedly saved the NHS a huge amount of money by helping millions of type-2 diabetics gain control of their condition by changing their diet and lifestyle. You don’t have to watch him on TV or buy his books if you don’t like him!

MaryMcCarthy · 09/01/2023 11:51

I barely know who he is.

How has he managed to invade your conscience so much? Is he a family member?

SpookyBlackCat · 09/01/2023 12:10

His wife is a GP, I think.

I have no idea how people survive on 800 kcal per day. I couldn’t do it.

A lot of cultures live on carb-based diets and are very healthy.

I don’t think his ideas are perfect. There are many issues with the Western diet that can be fixed without using his methods.

WinterFoxes · 09/01/2023 12:15

YANBU. I can't stand him either. He is patronising and creepy. I don't feel his focus is on health but on building his own wealth. Sure he's a businessman but there is something sneaky about making out you have the true key to physical wellbeing when actually you're just hyping the latest trends.

I hate how he states the bleein obvious as though it's a decree of wisdom from his superior mind: Get enough sleep! Reduce calories! Exercise! Wow - Michael, what phenomenal insights you are sharing with the ignorant masses.

ClaudiusTheGod · 09/01/2023 12:18

If you have Radio 4 on a lot, then he seems ubiquitous. Some of us have Radio 4 on. A lot.

Yep agree.
We have several of his books, which are researched in partnership with academics specialising in diabetes and which are logical and fairly easy to read. Think the recipes are generally really tasty, and if you follow the principles of the plans you do lose weight and feel much better!

However, I dislike that he so often works with the Daily Mail, and I do think that the marketing is a bit relentless, but as others have said, he is running a business. I'm inundated daily with marketing emails from countless other companies who are similarly trying to flog me stuff. At least what he's doing can have a positive impact on people's health.
