How do you dress your bed

I realise this is not a problem but just looking for ideas on how you all like to make your bed look inviting & luxurious. The ideas on the Internet are mind boggling.
If using a duvet do you like a top sheet under the duvet?
Do you prefer a king size duvet on a double bed
All this layering up with bedspreads, throws etc are a waste of time dh says, as he'll just kick them off onto the floor & then it's more work making the bed the next day.
Same with all the extra cushions. He just wants a bog standard duvet, 2 pillows & nothing else, but I want to be let loose & go a bit mad now he's redecorated the bedroom

We used to have loads of pillows and a throw on our bed and it took about 10 minutes to remove them all before we could get into bed each night. Drove me mad. We've recently redecorated and cut out all the fancy pillows but do have one white fancy pillow (which isn't shown in the photo) to tie in with the white runner at the bottom of the bed.

As you will see from the second photo one of my cats loves to get under the runner 😀

I like it simple, duvet, 2 pillows per side. Plain colour bedding that matches decor.

Doesn't mean I can't have a bit of luxury though. 800TC Egyptian Cotton, flat sheet, Oxford pillowcases etc.

Getting into the made bed feels like I'm staying in a posh hotel.

margithid · 08/01/2023 10:17

I'm also with your DH. 2 decent pillows each and a duvet one size bigger than the bed. Decent fitted sheet and duvet set in a pattern we both like (I usually pick a selection and then DH vetos any he hates) it's both our rooms and luckily im not really a fan of flowery anyway! Bed is aired while doing the breakfasts then made quickly and neatly. First thing I do when staying with family or hotels is remove unnecessary accoutrements.

Each to their own though. If you live alone or your DH doesn't mind then knock yourself out with cushions, throws and even soft toys if that's your thing and brings you joy! Although the latter does puzzle me a bit for grown up beds.

We are currently propped up in bed having coffee and no need for extra cushions. Got one thicker pillow that I push back when sleeping so that gives plenty bulk for sitting up.

gogohmm · 08/01/2023 10:19

I have a two sided duvet cover so I fold the top for that look you are talking about, 2 extra cushions.

knittingaddict · 08/01/2023 10:19

I don't do dfressing, I do making. No throws, no cushions, at all. I like good quality wool duvets and pillows and decent attractive covers. That's all a bed needs.

It's a pain when you stay in a holiday cottage and you have to find somewhere to stack the decorative cushions for the duration of the stay. If there's space they go in the wardrobe.

knittingaddict · 08/01/2023 10:21

I think bed cushions are a bit dated now, on top of the inconvenience. My daughter is an interior designer, so I'll ask her later.

SnowlayRoundabout · 08/01/2023 10:21

I'mTeam DH. It's infuriating having to throw cushions and pointless bits of cloth off the bed every night.

Juniperblue · 08/01/2023 10:22

I had this conversation with my DH 20 years ago. I worked as a chambermaid (is that term even used now?) and I really wanted to create an amazing bed like the ones in the hotel I worked for. I even saved up and bought all the stuff.... Fitted sheet plus flat sheets, multiple pillows (oxford pillowcases/pillow shams), soft blankets and throw with alternate bed runner for warmer weather... it was aesthetically perfect but my DH hated it, thought it uncomfortable and constricting and it didn't last and even I had to admit it was all a bit of a nuisance 😁. I think good quality and simple is probably the way to go!

Definitely get a king size duvet though! I like the drop (as long as it doesn't reach the floor!) and the extra coverage - I miss the king size duvet when we stay in hotels with a double size one.

thinkingaboutmydoorbell · 08/01/2023 10:24

Going against the grain - I love to “dress” my bed! I think it looks luxurious and inviting and adds texture to the room. It’s all personal preference though.

I have a throw at the bottom of the bed, in addition to 4 pillows I have 2 decorative cushions and a long bolster cushion in front of those.

We smoosh into the cushions if reading in bed and then fling everything on the floor to sleep.

Acrasia · 08/01/2023 10:25

When I moved to Germany I was surprised, but immediately converted, by having two separate duvets on a double bed. They are sized somewhere in between a single and a double. No duvet rug if wars in the night. Bliss.

Acrasia · 08/01/2023 10:26

rug if war = tug of war

SnowlayRoundabout · 08/01/2023 10:28

Can anyone who uses runners across the lower half of the bed explain why? I've never understood the point.

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2023 10:29

Dress it?

I don't even have time to make it Grin

I literally sling the duvet straight when I get up.

Passmeaplacard · 08/01/2023 10:29

I do find that a nice throw and a couple of cushions makes it look inviting without too much hassle. I don’t iron bedsheets so it looks smarter to me with the throw pulled over the sheets. Also use the throw as an extra layer on cold nights.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 08/01/2023 10:30

I'm a "duvet and one pillow each" woman too. An oversize duvet means less fighting over it during the night, but all the rest is not "luxury" it's "clutter".

I do like gorgeous prints duvet and you can spend a fair amount on them if you like - I didn't get this one as it's too dark but I still quite fancy it!)

WolfFoxHare · 08/01/2023 10:35

100% cotton percale sheets, king sized duvet on double bed, four pillows, blankets over footboard, silk or velvet quilts over bottom of the bed, coordinating cushions. Eg this is my Xmas bedding.

Quilts and cushions only if I can be arsed though.

Thick duvet and 2 good pillows each with a really nice duvet cover. No extra cushions, throws etc. It's all extra work picking them back up, arranging them, more washing, and feels like clutter. Plus extra expense buying it all in the first place.

watcherintherye · 08/01/2023 10:40

Dress my bed? I plump up the pilllows, throw back the duvet to air it, then make it tidy. More or less what I do with myself Grin

WolfFoxHare · 08/01/2023 10:41

I’m a maximalist though. DH would definitely prefer just duvet and pillows but I remove the cushions and quilts before bed and fold them up on the ottoman at the foot of the bed so it’s no hassle for him. I also like nice bowls and vases and boxes scattered on the shelves which I know other people see as dust collectors! I don’t care though - they’re not having to dust my house.

starfishmummy · 08/01/2023 10:56

Some days I'll tidy the duvet and pillows up and possibly remove damp towels....but not always

annonymousse · 08/01/2023 10:56

Our bed is just duvet and pillows as DH complains if I add anything. The guest beds are fully dressed with cushions and throws and look gorgeous and (to my eyes) very inviting. Keeps us both happy 😊

honeylulu · 08/01/2023 11:06

Duvet and two pillows only. Anything else is just irritating and pointless. (I do have a V shaped reading pillow as well for reading/watching TV in bed but it gets moved onto the floor for sleeping.) Only our guest room bed has a bedspread because it can be weeks between use and it helps keep the dust off the clean sheets in the meantime.

My MIL had all her beds covered in layers of bedspreads and throws and piles of frilly cushions. Totally pointless as you had to lob them all into a corner of the room just to get into the bloody bed.

Bbq1 · 08/01/2023 11:11

fairislecable · 08/01/2023 09:52

It is a bed therefore it already looks inviting.

This exactly.

Unglamorousgranny · 08/01/2023 11:17

Thank you all. Defo going with dh preference. Won't even bother with a throw. I obviously have too much time on my hands if I'm talking about dressing the bed. And I hate to admit it but I do iron the bedding too. I'm ocd about having that smooth crisp look you get when you first put it the bed. By the end of the working week though I couldn't care less, I need to get out more!

My friend works in a posh hotel where there is a strict rule that housekeeping staff never put the cushions on the floor while making the bed. When she mentioned this I said "They must realise that the first thing every guest is going to do is chuck the cushions on the floor themselves?".

Very true. What is the actual thinking behind putting multiple cushions on a bed that need to be removed before you can use the bed? Do people who like to give themselves an unnecessary little job to do first also keep 48 recipe books scattered on their kitchen worktops for show that 'simply' need to be removed before you can use it; or a few dozen bottles of bubble bath in the bath?

What is the association of cushions with beds, anyway? Is it just the idea of general comfort? Is the bed itself not comfy enough? And anyway, we usually have pillows on beds and not cushions - people don't normally keep one pillow on their sofa at all times, let alone 17 of them.
