To not be able to stop thinking about the Idaho murder case

Is anyone else following this case? It’s absolutely horrible and has really scared me to the point of locking my bedroom door when I sleep every night! The more that comes out in the news, the more bizarre and confusing the case seems to get too. So scary to think what people are capable of 😞

Yet only a few months ago a child was killed at home by a gunman who forced their way inside. They had nothing to do with the child or her family. He was chasing someone else who forced their way in to the nearest property.

Things do happen. Rarely I agree but we are all mortal!

So what steps have you taken to stop that happening to you? Or do you just sit and worry about it?

justgettingthroughtheday · 11/01/2023 10:55

@Greatly where have I said I'm worried about it??? I'm not! But I don't judge people who are! Unlike yourself!!!

Yeah, sorry, I do judge people living in the UK who say they can't sleep because of it. It's really silly. But some people love an obsessive conspiracy theory 🤷🏼‍♀️

justgettingthroughtheday · 11/01/2023 11:07

@Greatly well you are clearly just a nasty piece of work with little or no empathy!
People are allowed to feel anxious about anything. And express them without judgement. And these are not baseless fears. I can think of several recent reports of nighttime stranger intruders in the UK. Some of which have involved violence. You may think your immortal or immune from threats but you are mistaken.

Let's just hope that when your house of cards comes tumbling down you get more support than you have shown on this thread.

Quinniebellie · 11/01/2023 11:08

Well this thread has completely gone off topic hasn’t it?! 🙈

Anywayyyy. Hopefully this thread can move on now. I'm hoping it keeps running so as and when new information comes to light it could be discussed here, calmly.

I’ve been watching a YT channel called ‘10 to life’ about this case, which I’d recommend. From her last update, it seems that there’s some fake audio doing the rounds. Apparently the only audio evidence caught on a neighbour’s ring doorbell was of ‘some whimpering, a thud, and a dog barking’. I think she said this is referenced in the arrest affidavit, but hasn’t been released, and is unlikely to be released until trial.

I think (and I’m not an expert) that they’ve got the right guy, and I think there’ll be more than enough evidence to convict him by the time it gets to trial. Every aspect of his life - including his apartment, his car, any tech he used - will be gone over with a fine-tooth comb. I’d bet that no matter how careful and smart he thought he was, there’s at least one victim’s dna in his car. I just hope they don’t allow a plea deal, I think it’s one of very few cases I think the death penalty should be in play.

But I very much don’t think that the British murder is ‘worse’ in the sense of more tragic or more horrific

I think it's utterly bizarre to be so creepily invested in the American murders that you've made yourself scared if you live in the UK - or in the US for that matter. If you are a college girl in the States then I could understand it. But this obsession with it, to the extent you are dismissive about the UK case, is truly bizarre. Is it Tiktok that makes people like this? Or YouTube and the endless conspiracy theories? Were you made scared by the school shootings in the US? Or stabbings in London?

What a very odd response. It’s as though you haven’t read anyone’s posts 😂 I haven’t ‘dismissed’ anything. I have said that BOTH murders are hideous tragedies and I don’t think it’s appropriate to come on a thread where people are discussing a horrible murder and basically telling people that they shouldn’t care because there was a ‘worse’ murder. As if that makes this one okay.

I’m not scared of this murder in particular, I thought it was very obvious (as it’s been said multiple times on the thread) that the scary thing is the knowledge of what others are capable of. This reminder that we could be walking and talking and speaking every day to someone who could do something like this and have no idea. The idea that even our very own homes might not be safe.

I don’t like in the UK, not that it’s relevant, and wouldn’t know about TikTok as I’ve never had one. I do know that it is a very normal and healthy response for a human to be unsettled and even scared upon hearing about a horrible murder. Fear is a survival method. It’s fine to be afraid and saddened when you hear of something like this. Its actually rather odd to be fine about it if I’m honest, but you do you 😂

As an ex criminology student I can promise you that way of thinking/opinion when considering fear of crime is a well recognised phenomena. Doesn't mean it's right or logical but the majority of people will think along these lines to some extent. We fear the unknown, we fear the bogey man. We don't fear our husbands or boyfriends even though the data shows they're the bigger risk. Everyone thinks that won't happen to them.

I’m an anthropology graduate and 100% agree.

Death by fire or knife man? We should all ponder over it..

Hahaha I literally had this discussion with myself tonight as I went to lock my bedroom door. Now snuggled up with the door locked 😂 (different time zone, I’m not just lazy!)

That should probably come with a big of a trigger warning - there’s some quite gruesome descriptions of injuries.

Ravenrobin309 · 11/01/2023 18:22

I can't believe this thread has been attacked by some just because it isn't in the UK and judge people for being triggered by it. We all have different fears and for most people being stalked and murdered by a madman in your safe space is terrifying!. Some real nasty people on this thread.

justgettingthroughtheday · 11/01/2023 21:38

I hadn't realised Ethan was a triplet with his siblings also at the university. I hope none of them were amongst the student witnesses that morning.

thewinterwitch · 11/01/2023 23:46

My thought when I saw the thread title was why Idaho? Why follow the US? Why not this one, that has been keeping me awake? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-64038743

Well, because, while horrific and terrible sad, the case you have linked had an obvious linked perpetrator.

Whereas the Moscow student murders were a mystery to the public for roughly seven weeks. There was, and still is to some extent, a randomness to the choosing of these four young people for such a savage attack. The killer could have been anyone (hence the feverish speculation) and the targets anyone, sleeping in their houses.

If you can't see the differences in the cases, then I expect you can't understand why the student murders would have been so unsettling for; in a way, it is for modern people like waking up to the news of the Tate-LaBianca murders.

Thank you for sharing this article! How well-written! I was glued to the screen reading it. It was awful but written in a way that meant I couldn’t stop reading. I’d not heard much about the original scene so this was really interesting but just so sad - those poor kids who discovered their friends. I don’t know how they’ll recover from seeing that. It sounds as if even the policeman and coroner struggled to see it (understandably) so God knows how the kids will cope. So horribly sad.

One thing that has confused me is why Bryan didn’t leave any trace of blood outside or on the door as he exited. Presumably he would have been absolutely soaked in blood? I read (again, not an official source but a theory) that unless he intentionally took time to clean himself then he should have left blood because there was just so much. Without being too awful, it could have been literally dripping off him. So did he clean himself? There was no mention of blood in Dylan’s description? Unless she just couldn’t see because he was wearing black. This is a theory that people are using to support the fact that he didn’t work alone - because the timeline seems short to commit 4 murders, so to add cleaning himself up in that time just doesn’t seem possible. But then surely if he’d have cleaned himself there’d have been DNA? I’m just wondering how he also managed to get back home without anyone seeing blood? Although he was reported to arrive home around 5:30 so that’s about an hour after the murders. Could he have stopped somewhere to clean and change? He lives 7 miles away from Moscow - it wouldn’t take an hour to drive 7 miles. If so, where could he have stopped? Was there an accomplice and if so did he go to their house? 100% speculating here but I’ve just been thinking about it since I read the comment posted by someone else

Agree @Rickandmortified100 I’m also confused about the lack of a blood trail outside of the house. I assume this would have been thoroughly checked as the police would try to assert which way the perpetrator took when he left the house? It doesn’t state it was raining? They were all killed within less than 20 minutes from when Bryan’s car was picked up in the area then speeding away. No way he’d have time to strip, wash, redress then clean the shower etc? Were there signs someone had washed I wonder? Considering what was done to Kaylee alone, he would have been drenched! Was there a fence or garden gate he’d have had to have gone through assuming he left from back of the house?

Also can’t imagine he’d have spent time in the house washing and changing when he would have known there were other people in the house? He’d apparently stalked them for ages so knew who lived there. Plenty of SM videos showing all the girls. Even if he thought the other 2 girls were both in the basement (Dylan had recently moved upstairs), would he taken the risk that one of them had heard something and the police were already on their way?

Was there a blood trail inside the house from the 3rd floor to the 2nd and through to the sliding door Dylan said she saw him exit from?

Also the article states all 4 were asleep when killed which was what was originally said, then it was reported Xana was awake as she’d had a food delivery at 4am. Could she really have eaten then fallen into such a deep sleep she didn’t wake up when someone came into their room, straight after eating all in the space of 20 mins? Was it verified that Xana answered the door to the delivery guy?

Article states the room mates tried to rouse the victims? They surely would have smelt the blood and would have realised they were dead just by looking from a distance! Were their room doors locked by Bryan as he left?

That article raises even more questions than it answers. Mind you 7 and a half hours is plenty of time to put a few loads in the washing machine and tumble dryer and clean up. It would have made more sense if Dylan hadn’t seen him leaving so soon afterwards. They’ve got to find blood particles in his car, even a thorough clean wouldn’t get rid of all of it.

Itsnotalternateuniverses · 12/01/2023 08:37

I understand being unnerved by this case. I felt the same after seeing the video of Bridge Guy. It's not fear for myself but more the primal fear of being hunted and murdered.

In regard to what BK was wearing, we knew he was wearing a mask as this was stated by the witness. Maybe he was covered entirely and was able to change quickly because he was wearing disposable clothing. As he'd brought a knife, rather than using a knife from their kitchen, it's not unreasonable to think that he was well prepared and had brought a change of clothes etc.

“Mortensen and Funke found it impossible to rouse their roommates and called friends for assistance.”
What does this mean? Did the two girls go to the victims’ bedrooms, tried to WAKE them up and seeing they did not wake up called for assistance? Wtf? How do you try and wake up people who are drenched in blood, obviously murdered?
Upon arriving to the victims’ bedroom you would see the carnage and call 911 immediately, no?

Or does this mean the two girls tried to call their friends on their phones first and not having a response they called for assistance from friends without having checked if the victims were in their bedrooms? If I had flatmates I would try to knock on their bedroom doors first, not call them on their phones..
Can anyone explain this?

thewinterwitch · 12/01/2023 09:04

Can anyone explain this?

There has been some limited information laid out in the affidavit (linked several times on this thread); the timeline and actions are confusing, from what has been made public so far. It won't become clear until the trial, I think.

AllOfThemWitches · 12/01/2023 09:07

For those that think he's had a 'normal' life, I'm willing to bet he's experienced some sort of trauma.

I think I read before that they’d tried to call them.

But given what happened and that Dylan and Bethany not only survived, but weren’t at all involved – barring Dylan witnessing him leave – and they were in all likelihood hungover and possibly still drunk, it’s possible that they were just panicked and shocked and dissociating. If you woke up in your shared house and discovered 75% of the occupants had been brutally slaughtered but you’d slept through it all, I don’t think you’d react logically or sanely or even compute what had happened: it’s so bizarre and horrifying it’s almost unreal, right? So maybe they yelled their names or tried to call them again – fuck knows after my mother died I kept calling her phone – or stumbled around the house looking for them, unwilling to believe the bodies they’d seen were them, then ran outside and collapsed at which point the neighbour calls 911 about the collapse, not the crime.
