Do you feel patriotic ?

I do feel patriotic and I got laughed at and basically mocked when I said it.

I was quite upset about that - AIBU?

I can understand not being 'proud' because none of us achieved being British or any other nationality, however feeling 'ashamed' is a bit strong. On the whole it's pretty good here. At the moment the world seems to be having problems but they won't last. I've lived through peaks and troughs, that's life wherever you are.

I am very patriotic but I am Irish.

LBFseBrom · 22/01/2023 09:05

Is it more acceptable to be patriotic if you are Irish? I've never heard that one before.

whereaw · 22/01/2023 10:25

@LBFseBrom anyone can be patriotic. As long as they aren't English.

Not a clue I just answered the OP's question and stated where I am as I am aware this is a UK board not an Irish one so did not know if that made a difference.

Yes, @janet0001
I AM patriotic. I just don't get why everyone else seems to be embarrassed to be English. I also don't get why the Tories are blamed for everything. It will be odd to see the celebrations when Labour get in & everyone slowly realises that nothing is changing.

My patriotism is expressed in wanting the best for our country and the people who live here.

I don't want politicians to lie to me that things in our country are "world beating" when they're not, and I'm proud of our country when there's cause to be,and ashamed when there's cause to be.

DiastasisRectiSucks · 22/01/2023 16:57

No I don’t feel any patriotism, nationalism, etc.

I’ve never ever felt the sense of belonging to a team or club or group that other people really really care about. So the idea of patriotism is just strange and abstract to me.
I’ve never felt that kind of us and them type feeling that is ingrained in humans (generally as a survival instinct)

I just happened to be born here not somewhere else and overall that seems fairly lucky but also entirely random.

But I’m Autistic so that may be part of why 😅

I'm patriotic enough to think that having a Prime Minister who could be bought was a very bad idea.

It makes me wonder who else Boris Johnson he was taking money from, and for what?
