Is this racist or am I being sensitive,

Just saw on my local reisdents Facebook page, Chinese restaurant has posted to say that they’re shutting for a month to allow family to travel home for Chinese new year. Most responses are people saying to enjoy their well earned time off. Then someone has posted ‘make sure you don’t bring anything home with you 😷 🤢’

i think this is really inappropriate, but loads of people have posted laughing emojis and liked the post.

I’ve reported to page admins who have said it doesn’t breach their rules and left the comment up.

OP posts:

Yep it’s racist and offensive.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 04/01/2023 18:52

I agree it's in terrible taste.

NotAHouse · 04/01/2023 18:54

It's a gross joke about the origins of Covid, but exactly the sort of thing you'd find on a local residents Facebook page.

Applecottagetree · 04/01/2023 18:54

It's not racist.

Rumplestrumpet · 04/01/2023 18:55

Don't expect a good response here OP - Mumsnet has a notorious blind spot when it comes to racism.

It's a bloody awful thing to say but doesn't surprise me

FixItUpChappie · 04/01/2023 18:55

I don’t think it’s racist - it’s a fact that there is lots of covid in china right now as is all over the news. In poor taste perhaps but that is not the same thing

Rebeljustforkicks · 04/01/2023 18:56

I think that's a bit of a reach tbh

georgarina · 04/01/2023 18:57

Probably referring to China reversing its zero-tolerance Covid policy

PinkyFlamingo · 04/01/2023 18:57

Why is it racist?

HermioneWeasley · 04/01/2023 18:58

Estimates in some Chinese cities are that 75% of residents are currently infected. Countries are introducing specific travel requirements for Chinese residents - are they all racist?

Thereisnolight · 04/01/2023 19:01

Your OP is what’s racist.
It’s as though you think no one should mention the fact that someone is from China. Because it’s rude. Because there’s something wrong with being from China.

I disagree. I think it's because there is a lot of COVID in China at the moment, so much so that people leaving there are being asked to test before they come to the UK, Europe etc - unlike any other country.

I don't think it's racist, I think it's about current affairs.

PeacefulPottering · 04/01/2023 19:02

It's a joke. China is having a lot of COVID cases. They are joking and saying don't catch COVID and bring it back. It's dark humor some people use because it helps sometimes to lighten the room. It's NOT frickin racist and I'm so fed up of people shouting racism at the drop of a hat. If you don't find it amusing then you don't, but it's not racism and your sense of humor is different than others. Just like someone may not think a joke you like is funny, some people have dark sense of humor, some people daft, juvenile, etc. It's called being different and it's okay.

jtaeapa · 04/01/2023 19:03

It's certainly offensive and unacceptable. But I am not sure it's racist exactly. China has loads of covid at the moment.

Protocol to stop spread isn’t, but Facebook, especially the local group comments section are the dregs of humanity, this is more likely to be an offensive attempt at a joke at best, or a deliberately racist comment at worst.

purpledalmation · 04/01/2023 19:05

Our local Facebook page is a hotbed of piss taking. Not honestly sure about the comment. I wouldn't make it, but it could, have been jokey. Poor taste, yes, racist no, china is in the thick of a covid epidemic.

thunderstruckk · 04/01/2023 19:07

China currently has spiralling covid cases, the dead are being burned in the streets, people are infecting and reinfecting as they've lost so much immunity, it's in a state of chaos in quite a few areas. I think the comment is more about the current state of China and its battle with Covid than anything else.

Vallmo47 · 04/01/2023 19:08

Offensive and in bad taste- yes. Racist, well no, where in that joke are they referring to race? It’s about disease. People from my home country used to joke that they wouldn’t want to be in England during the peak of covid - we had by far more cases than they did at the time. I assumed they were referring to the actual illness and they weren’t terrified of catching the English pale skin.

Ihatethenewlook · 04/01/2023 19:10

My daughters school has cancelled her trip to china where they were meant to be studying pollution because of the Covid outbreak. Are they also racist?

lunar1 · 04/01/2023 19:10

It is racist and I'd tell them so.

Thereisnolight · 04/01/2023 19:11

This has to be a joke?!!
They we’re all flying on a plane to China….to study pollution??!

VioletCharlotte · 04/01/2023 19:11

Not racist but poor taste. It's the sort of comment that may be seen as a joke/banter when among friends, but not appropriate when said to someone you don't know.

Thereisnolight · 04/01/2023 19:11

🙄

This is the equivalent of telling black people they are racist because they see racism where none exists.

Yes, OP, it’s racist.
