Just saw on my local reisdents Facebook page, Chinese restaurant has posted to say that they’re shutting for a month to allow family to travel home for Chinese new year. Most responses are people saying to enjoy their well earned time off. Then someone has posted ‘make sure you don’t bring anything home with you 😷 🤢’

i think this is really inappropriate, but loads of people have posted laughing emojis and liked the post.

I’ve reported to page admins who have said it doesn’t breach their rules and left the comment up.

OP posts:

I'm not sure I agree with you here.

I grew up in London in the 70s during the IRA bombing campaigns as the U.K. borm child of an Irish family. I couldn't tell you how many 'jokes' I lived with about me or my parents or extended family having semtex in the house or phoning in bomb scares or being part of the IRA. When they were just hard working migrants trying to build a life here.

All these hilarious jokes were entirely based on the assumption that everyone from Ireland was a potential threat just like all these CoVid jokes appear to be.

I like this. Makes a lot of sense.

No it does not make sense.

Go and read some definitions about racism the pair of you. Racism is about prejudice and the discrimination that springs from that. Racism by definition is
unfair - it does not make sense, so using a ‘sense test’ for racism doesn’t work.

It's a gross joke about the origins of Covid, but exactly the sort of thing you'd find on a local residents Facebook page.

No, it’s a nod to the current outbreaks of covid in China and the Uk ruling that anyone coming into the UK doesn’t need to isolate even if they test positive. Read the news FFS

Jada1234 · 04/01/2023 19:34

I think that’s a racist remark

Why?

oakleaffy · 04/01/2023 19:46

Thereisnolight · 04/01/2023 19:11

This has to be a joke?!!
They we’re all flying on a plane to China….to study pollution??!

That actually made me snort!
About as short sighted as it gets 😂

UNLESS they were going by sail~boat.

Then I take back my comment.

Indacathouse · 04/01/2023 19:46

MN definitely has a blind spot when it comes to racism. Many responses are ignorant and I’m going to assume many on here have never been on the brunt of implicit, subtle or explicit overt racism or prejudice due to their ethnicity.

Firstly look at the context. It was about celebrating the NY and the comment was uncalled for and it was not within the context of the post, so you have to wonder why that person said it? it was meant to be provocative and upsetting? To highlight and segregate a race/ethnicity with an us and them attitude?

since Covid the number of attacks on Asian people has increased ten fold. Poor people just going about their lives getting attacked because their heritage is Asian.

im shocked to at people on here think this isn’t racist.
the question you have to ask yourself is what was the purpose of the post?
And would you happily of made that comment to a Chinese person (in person)?

howrudeforme · 04/01/2023 19:47

Very bad taste.

the reactions to the post is racist imo. COVID isn’t funny.

bobbytorq · 04/01/2023 19:47

It's not racist but it is in poor taste.

MichaelFartblender · 04/01/2023 19:48

Soontobe60 · 04/01/2023 19:44

Why?

It’s been repeatedly explained upthread. Why do you need to be spoon fed?

Well said.

Begoniasforever · 04/01/2023 19:48

It’s not racist, china is all over the news due to their covid cases. I’m sure anyone going there would get the same comment. Christ we are thinking of suspending all flights from china to the uk, is that racist?

Doris86 · 04/01/2023 19:49

toocold54 · 04/01/2023 19:42

I wonder if the poster would have said the same if they were travelling to a country with high numbers of covid that wasn’t China - I highly doubt it.

In the early days of covid, people were saying exactly that about people who had visited various different countries, which has had covid outbreaks

WuTangGran · 04/01/2023 19:49

Yes, it’s racist.

SuperPup86 · 04/01/2023 19:50

That's totally different.

Anyone who's recently been in China IS a potential threat due to the Covid boom they're having. There's no judgement of the individual person there, it's just fact.

I'd avoid anyone coming from China for several days, whether Chinese or not.

Unsure33 · 04/01/2023 19:50

So if France had the highest rate of covid at the moment and it was said to a French person would that be racist ? Just curious?

toocold54 · 04/01/2023 19:40

Yes I think it’s disgusting.

So many Chinese (or who people thought were Chinese) were verbally and sometimes physically assaulted because people blamed them for covid.

I hate this sort of ‘banter’ which is actually usually extremely offensive language said as a ‘joke’ and anyone who disagrees is told to calm down or that they’re over reacting.

I was going to comment on this. The bullying of and violence against Chinese or those perceived to be Chinese was definitely racist. I don’t think this comment is racist though. Ill conceived and crass, certainly.

My dh is from a different country and he gets a lot of ribbing. It is banter but it’s wearing after a while and othering. However I don’t think this is the same and anyone regardless of ethnicity would get the same comment if they were visiting a place with such high numbers of covid cases.

toocold54 · 04/01/2023 19:53

If this is racist, then I suppose anybody going to get vaccines against tropical diseases before travelling to countries where those diseases are present must also be racist. In a way, you could also say it's racist/xenophobic to be frightened of travelling to Australia because of the massive dangerous spiders there.

No because you’re not making it a joke or intentionally being offensive about it.

If I said my new husband is African and someone made a ‘joke’ that I better wear a condom incase I get AIDs - that would be incredibly offensive and racist, even though AIDS is much more prevalent in Africa than it is the UK.

If I travelled to Africa and someone said to be careful of the people because a lot of them have AIDS and joked about not bringing it back home, then again that would be offensive.

If I travelled to Australia and someone said that I need to be careful because they’re all descendants of criminals then that would be offensive, even though many criminals were sent to Australia.

Of course things like spiders and malaria are less offensive because they’re animals and the ‘joker’ isn’t making fun of an entire group of people.

Confused

Explain what you think racism is ?

SnackSizeRaisin · 04/01/2023 19:56

I don't think that the comment is racist however it's unkind and I would wonder about the motivation behind it. It's not the kind of comment that a fine upstanding community member would make. More likely comes from someone with an axe to grind. They probably knew they'd get away with this comment because it's not strictly racist, while still wanting to cause offence . Not everything that's not racist is inoffensive.

Cherrysherbet · 04/01/2023 19:57

How is that racist? It’s just a stupid comment.
