Just saw on my local reisdents Facebook page, Chinese restaurant has posted to say that they’re shutting for a month to allow family to travel home for Chinese new year. Most responses are people saying to enjoy their well earned time off. Then someone has posted ‘make sure you don’t bring anything home with you 😷 🤢’

i think this is really inappropriate, but loads of people have posted laughing emojis and liked the post.

I’ve reported to page admins who have said it doesn’t breach their rules and left the comment up.

OP posts:

It's obviously just a throw away flippant comment , not worth worrying about . FB bants have these things everywhere.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/01/2023 08:19

Isn’t that how environmentalists operate?

I can think of one particular 'national treasure' who has spent most of his very long life jetting around the world with a camera crew - who is now firmly in the camp of telling us that we must not do the same, because of the environment.

China currently has spiralling covid cases, the dead are being burned in the streets, people are infecting and reinfecting as they've lost so much immunity, it's in a state of chaos in quite a few areas. I think the comment is more about the current state of China and its battle with Covid than anything else.

This isn't true. Yes China has a lot if covid cases currently and hospitals are struggling BUT bodies are categorically not piling up and being burned in the street!

In fact the wait and treatment times in hospitals are actually still far better than they are in the UK at the moment (yes it's true some patients are unable to have beds and some people are having to receive IV drips outside the hospital etc. But the same thing is happening here and worse with people unable to get ambulances, sleeping on the floor in A&E , cancelling surgeries and unable to access GPs)

Also the UK has had times of very high covid (in fact the rate of covid is currently very high but we don't have accurate statistics since free testing stopped) , especially after lifting restrictions. The rate of covid in China currently is not globally unprecedented, just what most countries have already faced

Your comment is sensationalist and blatantly false

P.s a large number of my family are in China including some who work for the health system. People are fed up at the hospitals but outside of that things are continuing as normal

VladmirsPoutine · 05/01/2023 08:45

This is mumsnet. You could be a black woman and write a thread saying you recently moved to a new area and someone posted a banana and a toy monkey through your door and a helpful poster would still come along to tell you that it's not racist because it's welcoming new neighbours with nice gifts - after all aren't bananas healthy. Asking MN if something is racist is like trying to eat healthily on a diet of McDonalds and KFC.

ManxRhyme · 05/01/2023 08:49

I've seen similar comments on our FB post in regards to our local Chinese takeaway. In addition to comments asking about bat soup. These are usually made by the same people and are easily recognisable. They call it a 'joke' and everyone else including posters here defend it as such.

But it's the same characters with the same nasty undertones secure in the knowledge that their behaviour won't be called out. A couple near are local tradespeople. I have made it a point to avoid using their services.

Youdoyoubabe · 05/01/2023 08:50

Just a stupid joke.

thunderstruckk · 05/01/2023 09:01

@Meifly

I also have family in China - who've been stuck there during these horrendous lockdowns and been through this current situation, who have seen people burning their dead in the street. I'm not being sensationalist at all, I'm stating what I know for a fact. I never said bodies are "piling up" but I've seen the videos from my family members of what is currently going on. Big cities and smaller towns are having very different experiences.

My comment about China having huge numbers of covid cases spiralling is true from everything I've heard from family members and seen on the news reports. Same for the comment about them burning their dead. I made no comparisons to UK hospital wait times or anything similar.

I agree the rate in China is what to be expected and what other countries have previously faced - but we also had spiralling cases after coming out of lockdown. That doesn't mean that it's not happening right now over there and that the risk of getting covid isn't there 🤷🏻‍♀️

TarquinOliverNimrod · 05/01/2023 09:19

Not racist, Covid is rife in China, it’s a fact. It’s a v unfunny comment though, which is offensive in itself.

Justanotherlurker · 05/01/2023 09:22

@Meifly

I also have family and collegues who currently in China, family and I can say that you are trying to minimise the situation by quite some margin.

No bodies are not piling up on the streets, but it is not as rosey as you are painting it, and the 3rd tier cities it is even worse.

For any westerner wanting to see the real situation and not the manipulated state narrative there is plenty of areas of Twitter

twitter.com/jenniferzeng97

twitter.com/TGTM_Official

Even a quick glance on Weibo will show the situation is far from what you suggest, there is no need to whatabout with regards to 'but the UK/boris blah blah'

InsiderLookingOut · 05/01/2023 10:22

It's neither racist nor offensive or in bad taste.

Unless you can read that posters mind or you know they have form for posting racist stuff, I can't just decide that they meant something different when there's a much more obvious possible reason for their post.

If nothing was going on currently in China regarding Covid and this post was made randomly simply because someone is going to China, then yes it's likely to be a racist remark.

Dotjones · 05/01/2023 10:24

It's not racist because it's the sort of advice anyone of any nationality would give to anyone else of any nationality who was travelling anywhere overseas - please try not to bring a horrible illness home with you.

SproutsLCerVEGNoEgg · 05/01/2023 10:47

Iamnotausername · 04/01/2023 20:04

Thanks for explaining but I'm still not seeing it I'm afraid. If they had said "you're chinese therefore you must carry covid" or "everyone "over there" is infected" yep, I get that as racist and I'm genuinely horrified about how some Chinese people have been treated regarding covid. But they didn't say that. They said "you're going to a country where covid is a big issue, don't bring it back".

I don't see how that is linked to ethnicity. As I said, people would say that if anyone visited any country with high numbers.

I am trying to see the racist undertones but I can't.

@Iamnotausername

exactly.

eith the current high rate of covid in China. Travel should be banned.

why are we so slow to learn lessons??

Dandelionn · 05/01/2023 12:10

Did the managers respond op?

Onebelow · 05/01/2023 12:21

startfresh · 05/01/2023 06:04

Difference is, your example IS racist. Nothing to suggest the woman was from China, nor that she had ever been there.

Stating Covid/Corona at people based on their appearance is 100% racist.

Saying to someone who is going to a covid infected country not to bring covid with them when they come back, is not racist. And could be said the same to anyone, regardless of race.

What do you mean there’s nothing to suggest this woman is from China? She’s travelling back HOME to china to celebrate CHINESE NEW YEAR with her FAMILY who still live in CHINA. Did you miss all that? 🙄

How is it racist to make a poor joke about someone not bringing Covid back from China? That the someone happens to be Chinese doesn't make the comment racist. The same comment could be said to anyone visiting China at the moment. Is it only racist because it was said to someone Chinese?

I don't get it.

JoyPeaceSleep · 05/01/2023 12:39

I dont t either. To classify this as racist assumes China is bad and we have to tiptoe around that. China is just a location going through it right now.
I see it as a light hearted practical comment.

danceyourselfdizzy1 · 05/01/2023 12:49

It's neither racist nor offensive or in bad taste.

Well I suppose it's not....if you're Bernard Manning.

People keep saying they "don't get it" and don't understand why it's racist yet are point blank refusing to actually read the many - correct IMO - reasons that have been given as to why it's bad taste and racist.

Because the ones saying it’s not racist are all privileged white women, they wouldn’t recognise racism if it jumped up and bit them on the fanjo.

To not healthy to look for racism everywhere either though, we don’t need to turn into America!

Covid is still rampant in China, so no, it’s not automatically racist.

I am saying it's not racist. I am mixed race.
You have therefore made an assumption about my heritage based on the words I have written.

Are you saying that privileged, white women cannot understand what racism means? Isn't that a bit prejudice of you?

Please can you explain clearly why it's racist.
Which part of "make sure you don’t bring anything home with you" said to someone visiting China is racist?

Don't just roll your eyes - educate me as to why that statement is racist.
