Is this racist or am I being sensitive,

Just saw on my local reisdents Facebook page, Chinese restaurant has posted to say that they’re shutting for a month to allow family to travel home for Chinese new year. Most responses are people saying to enjoy their well earned time off. Then someone has posted ‘make sure you don’t bring anything home with you 😷 🤢’

i think this is really inappropriate, but loads of people have posted laughing emojis and liked the post.

I’ve reported to page admins who have said it doesn’t breach their rules and left the comment up.

Remembering all the abuse that people who looked Chinese got at the start of COVID, it's a really awful and hurtful thing to say. And it could have racist intent - you don't know what this person meant.

Trainbear · 05/01/2023 13:21

Part of the issue is the different interpretations of what “racism” is. The legal Uk definition, the definition of moderators with flexible guidelines, or a feeling of hierarchy of victimhood.

They fairly obviously meant that they hope the person who was travelling to a place which currently has a high level of covid, doesn’t catch covid and bring it home.

Absolutely nothing racist about it.

Pothoswithasparkle · 05/01/2023 17:07

I am going to add that being white women in UK if you are Eastern European (and yes, you can see it on face features etc) is not exactly a priviledge either since we are simply not the right white kind...

Still don't find it racist.

Pothoswithasparkle · 05/01/2023 17:10

I really think the "bring home" is actually important bit showing it isn't hate.
In my well over decade in UK no one actually mentioned uk as my home but call my native country home. If someone said "don't bring anything home with you" rather than "back with you" it would really make a difference to me.

You can't really moan about racism in a post where you display both fattism and classism. 😂

Are you white? Would seem so from your emoji choice..l

I’m Asian, what has my choice of emoji got to do with my ethnicity? Dumb ass

By read, you mean accept without question? I'm pretty sure people have read but that doesn't mean they have to agree to the reasons others have given unless, as said before, they can read this fb poster's mind and know what they meant by their statement.

It's obvious a lot of people are projecting their own prejudice.

Not cool, @Onebelow , not cool.

Onebelow · 05/01/2023 21:32

Ill try to not cry 😂

Mark19735 · 05/01/2023 21:39

I don't want you to cry. Making assumptions about people you don't know doesn't enhance your argument, and being abusive in the way you make it doesn't change anyone's mind either.

It might make the abuser feel better about themselves ... temporarily ... but everyone reading this knows that it won't fill that empty hole inside where most normal people's self-esteem and dignity resides.

InsiderLookingOut · 05/01/2023 21:46

Yep, racism, sexism, classism, ageism, wieghtism, bodyshape-ism, all the isms are flatmates in the same house. To get so het up about one, especially when there's a blurry line as to if it is or not, make sure you're pure and free from the others.

As we can see on this thread, a lot of us aren't and proudly so too. Why should anyone take anyone seriously, in that case? <shrugs>

It's a gross joke about the origins of Covid, but exactly the sort of thing you'd find on a local residents Facebook page.

No it is a reference to the fact that China currently has a massive covid infection rate.

Flannan · 05/01/2023 02:16

I feel like the word “racist” is thrown around for too liberally these days and it’s irritating

This kind of comment just floors me, it really does.

Where to start?

@Flannan are you going to explain why or……?
