The government? Where is the leadership? The reassurance that the problem is being addressed with urgency? Cobra meetings? Horrendous stories coming out of A&E departments right now.

Steve Barclay, the Health Secretary today announced on twitter that people should download the Couch to 5k app to reduce pressure on the NHS.

Do your fucking job, Steve. And Rishi, show some leadership. You bloody wanted this job so badly, where have you gone?

Can't imagine why some people want to shut down discussion of the government's lack of action in this particular crisis.

Who does? Seems to be plenty of robust discussions?

roarfeckingroarr · 03/01/2023 10:58

Are you suggesting we all work for CCHQ @noblegiraffe 😂?

I didn't realise you could tell people not to join in a public discussion @noblegiraffe You must be very important.

@NowDoYouBelieveMe What a silly post. Are you 15?

roarfeckingroarr · 03/01/2023 10:56

100% agree @Katypp

The NHS model of free care at the point of use for pretty much everything just doesn't work anymore. Too many people, too long lives, too little personal responsibility, too complex treatments, too expensive. But, the NHS is like the national religion, so no government will take difficult and unpopular decisions. It's all a slow car crash.

Yeah, co payments for dentistry has worked brilliantly (not).

Piggywaspushed · 03/01/2023 11:00

Roar you still haven't told me what your proposition is? Genuinely interested to know.

Reminder - government not interested in European style systems.

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2023 11:01

You must be very important.

I'm the OP who wanted a discussion about the government's lack of inaction in this particular crisis.

If you want discussions about the NHS that don't involve political discussion then this is not the thread for you.

It really depends on the area you live in.

Family member in A+E suspected pneumonia in and out in 7 hours. including tests, bloods, and xrays.

I've also had 2 very quick hospital appointments when referred by GP.

It’s not just about where you live though .
Just look at the horror stories daily on all the news websites, friends experiences etc …you cannot pretend it’s not a problem!
Where is our Government? They need to be seen and heard .

2FelisCatus · 03/01/2023 11:01

A European model makes the most sense but there's so little expertise and lots of corruption standing in the way.

Stunningscreamer · 03/01/2023 11:01

Kendodd · 03/01/2023 09:45

I know very, very few Leave voters who have changed their minds though. Any price is worth paying for Brexit, even if it completely bankrupts the country and everyone in it. Personally, their position baffles me, I guess the 'freedom' to pump shit straight into the sea is important to them though.

I don't think they actually realise a lot of them what Brexit actually means. They don't understand about the poo in the sea because it doesn't make big headlines in the Daily Mail. They don't realise that the bureaucracy has actually increased for businesses because of the red tape involved now in customs declarations because the Tory press doesn't talk about it. And they don't understand that our economy has tanked because of it because they're still getting their pensions and aren't affected by mortgage rates or loss of trade deals.

The NHS did improve quite significantly under Labour. Some of us actually remember that time.

2FelisCatus · 03/01/2023 11:03

We have to have a very hard look at the ridiculous contracts being handed out to Tory mates for very little in return.

So you're not really interested in a debate then, just want a ranty echo chamber?
Any thread about the failings of the NHS is very quickly overrun by posts such as yours, but I suppose you are so right that is allowed in your rules?

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2023 11:12

I'm not sure how anyone can look at this graph and claim that it's not a Tory problem, given the high level that they started at.

My OP is about the government inaction in dealing with the crisis in emergency health care which, right now, is making headline news and is extremely concerning.

If you want to debate with me about that, feel absolutely free.

Do you think that the government is dealing well with the crisis when the only tweet the Health Secretary made yesterday was advising people to download a running app to relieve pressure on the NHS?

Do you believe that the government is dealing well with the crisis when people are baffled as to what action they are taking to deal with it?

Do you think that demonstrates good leadership?

OP posts:
LostaraYil · 03/01/2023 11:25

I think the inaction from the government is disgraceful. I'm also afraid that people will continue to vote for the tories because they will make unrealistic promises like they always have when it's time for the general election. To be realistic a party would have to commit to something like raising taxes, which would put too many voters off. People also need to accept that taxes in the UK are still lower than many European countries with better health care systems. If not higher taxes, would people agree to a means tested annual fee for using the NHS? I'd happily pay £50 a year if it meant I could rely on the NHS being there for me if I need it.

Wtaf. The op is clear, they are legitimately asking where the fuck Sunak and the rest of the government is as a time of national emergency.

You appear to me to have nothing to add to this other than an over inflated sense of your own importance, trying to deflect from the discussion.

Why do you not feel the the government should take responsibility for the piss poor state they've governed the NHS into?

In Boots, Lloyds, Superdrug, Tesco, Asda? Not a single one offered a slot you could make? Gosh.

Not that I could find, no. As I said, I was lucky to be offered one at work. My partner has not been able to get one around work hours either, until this week.

VerifiedBot2351 · 03/01/2023 11:28

LittleDisaster · 03/01/2023 09:54

You work 6 days pw and never have any leave?

My leave would have been half term, and luckily my work organised it before then. Work meant I couldn’t make any appointment Monday to Friday, and there were no Saturday slots near me, presumably having been snapped up early. My local pharmacy offered to put me on the waiting list for a Saturday appointment.

Yep just like that £350 million a week for the NHS they promised after Brexit.

Perhaps they're still hunting for it at the back of the fridge.

On a serious note, we have to get rid of this government if we want an NHS. They are intent on destroying it, they're doing it right in front of our faces and if we don't do something soon, it will be too late.

You know the replacement will be something like the US, not France.

Maybe it's time we get a bit more French in our response.

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2023 11:33

What are they spending that £350 million a week on?

That works out as £18.2 billion per year. Now I think that illustrative sum was nonsense, however since Brexit spending on health and social care has increased by significantly more than that.
