Friend asking me to sign an NDA

Shinebrightinthenight · 02/01/2023 16:45

Aibu to refuse to sign it? I don’t understand why people would feel the need to put a friend that they trust under an NDA. She’s asked all her other friends to sign NDA’s as well so not just me. She is quite well known (was in the public eye) but nothings happened recently to cause this so it seems quite random to now be wanting to put us all under NDA. The NDA’s are proper ones as well that have been wrote by lawyers.

Sounds full of herself!

Ffsmakeitstop · 02/01/2023 16:47

Are you in UK? I always understood they weren't binding. Saying that I don't know any so-called celebrities.
Seems a weird thing to ask a friend.

MichelleScarn · 02/01/2023 16:48

Is she well known for something good or are of an insta/reality tv 'star' or is this this something she's likely to be on soon? (Ponders what progs are coming up.....)

PissedAgain · 02/01/2023 16:48

I'd have to laugh it off. I'd be signing nothing.

Butchyrestingface · 02/01/2023 16:49

You can refuse to sign it. And presumably that will be the end of the friendship.

My concern would be if she decides that you have ratted her out to the press on something and tries to enforce the NDA/take legal action against you? Even if you're innocent, it would be undue stress on you trying to prove it. But I say that as someone with no idea how these things work.

BethDuttonsTwin · 02/01/2023 16:49

Wouldn’t bother me, but I have had to sign them for work and I understand why people with a high profile want to protect themselves.

Cococomellon · 02/01/2023 16:49

Has something happened so she has reason to worry or does she have something coming up?

I think if you don't want to sign then you don't have to but also assume you're not planning on selling a story on her...

Yes in the UK.

The Apprentice?

KendrickLamaze · 02/01/2023 16:50

Guessing she is a little famous in some way. It might be a new suggestion from her management or something has been lined up and they have requested it. If it's out of the blue, it's likely not from her.

No I’m not planning on selling anything about her. And as far I know nothing has happened or is coming up.

Tell her to stick it up her arse

Testina · 02/01/2023 16:51

Don’t you normally get something in return for an NDA?
I’ve signed them at work - I get a job in return 🤣

Forestwalks · 02/01/2023 16:51

i wouldn’t be signing.

if they were a good friend they wouldn’t even need to ask you to sign anything to begin with.

ScrubName19 · 02/01/2023 16:51

I wouldn't sign it without independent legal advice. If your friend is willing to pay for that and allow your legal adviser to reword to make sure any off hand comment e.g. oh my friend drives that type of car they are rubbish. Wouldn't count as a breach.

Greatly · 02/01/2023 16:51

Why wouldn't you sign it?

ILoveeCakes · 02/01/2023 16:52

Who's your mate? Stacey Solomon?
Just name change then post her secret ;)

nosyupnorth · 02/01/2023 16:52

Depends on the context and what exactly you are agreeing not to disclose. First thing that comes to mind is that she's involved in a project and under her own NDA not to share details with people who aren't also bound by confidentiality therefore is doing the necessary steps to be able to share.

TheShellBeach · 02/01/2023 16:52

Do you mean "written" by lawyers?

sussexman · 02/01/2023 16:53

I'd be extremely uncomfortable with this; a friendship isn't a legal arrangement with rights and obligations on both sides and frankly if someone wanted to make it one that would likely be the end of it as far as I was concerned.

DelphiniumBlue · 02/01/2023 16:53

What's the quid pro quo for you?
Normally an NDA is part of contract that involves payment of money, because you can be sued for breaching an NDA. So as part of terms of employment, for example.
I can't see what benefit there would be for you, you can only lose. Why would you even consider it?

sussexman · 02/01/2023 16:54

Greatly · 02/01/2023 16:51

Why wouldn't you sign it?

Why would you - she's a friend, not an employer.

Yes, sorry that was a typo.

Probably as @Butchyrestingface said. Also have no idea though!

Of course an NDA is legally binding if executed correctly.
