AIBU to ask how long the NHS has left?

Genuinely now have the mindset that's it's not 'will' the NHS go under but 'when'. I'm not in the NHS though so I guess I'm asking 2 questions here....

  1. YABU the NHS will survive somehow or YANBU the NHS is going to go 100%
  1. If IANBU when? How much longer do you think we have?

Anyone recall the Liverpool pathway and the scandal at the time?

It's happening again inadvertently because of the state of the NHS www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23698071.amp

JenniferBooth · 01/01/2023 22:49

@Grumpybutfunny and it shouldnt be ok to slag off patients either but patient blaming is off the charts on MN Its the lack of social care causing these issues.

It never really went away though

NewStartIn50s · 01/01/2023 22:51

The Tories want to privatise it and the best way is to run it into the ground first and then say how awful it is....

Other nationalised industries have been privatised and of course the customer gets a much better deal now.... Gas, Electricity, Rail Network, Telecoms, etc etc --- oh wait we don't get a much better deal now....

Cavend · 01/01/2023 22:53

There have been post on this thread suggesting that PAs take on the front of house roles in hospitals, but the funding is no longer available to train as a PA for those with science degrees. The few who are already trained will not be enough to maintain care.

JonahAndTheSnail · 01/01/2023 22:57

Can people stop with these threads it's really hurtful for the staff trying to keep going through this crisis. The NHS isn't finished it's just going through one of the hardest times in its history. Hopefully once summer comes and respiratory virus die back for a few months things will improve.

I don't think many people are blaming NHS staff for the crisis; most people with half a brain cell can see that the NHS has been inadeqautely funded for decades. I'm by no means a high earner but will start looking at whether I can afford to access private healthcare this year, as I just received a text from my GP saying not to contact them unless it's an absolute emergency. I've rarely used the NHS in the past, last time I went to the doctors was probably 8 years ago now, but I'm pushing 40 now and am aware I may need more medical support over the coming years.

MoscowMules · 01/01/2023 22:58

Weirdly my local NHS has released a message on social media. I checked, because I knew they were struggling and visited their social media as this thread made me think of them.

They now have a consultant and nurse practitioner stood at the door of a and e, redirecting people home or to other services 😳

I can't imagine the grief those staff members are taking hourly on that door!

But it would appear a bun fight has now started between the "Main Hospital and the Minors Hospital, because of the influx that has been sent their way and they don't have the staff to cope with it in minors.

The hospitals are also 20+ miles apart, so if you've paid for say a taxi to get you to the main hospital because it's closer, you are now going to have to pay for another taxi to the hospital that's 20miles down the road. 😬

Load of fucking BS and the press talking shite about something they know nothing about. When you are dying you can no longer swallow , people aren't denied food and drink if you can take it. If you try to feed and force drink on a dying person they will choke on it. Is that a dignified way to die choking and drowning to death? The public need to learn about the dying process

EmmaEmerald · 01/01/2023 23:03

fifi "The public need to learn about the dying process"

yes
but when someone who can eat and drink is denied, it's criminal.

Dinosaurpoopy · 01/01/2023 23:03

Dh is home from a 12 hour paramedic shift, as always I asked how it was.

He did 4 jobs and said only 1 needed an ambulance! One guy admitted he phoned as he thought it would be quicker, they quickly told him the local hospital has a 17 ambulance queue at last count just to enter the building-people are the issue as well as a failing system

LizzieSiddal · 01/01/2023 23:04

Just seen on Sky News the newspaper headlines for tomorrow. All of them, including the Mail and Daily Express, who usually support this government, are leading with 500 people a week dying due to delays in A&E.

Surely the government will have to pull their fingers out now! Where the fuck are they?!

I also read that 12,000 beds are filled due to these people having nowhere to go. Social care HAS to be solved and if that involves more taxes, so be it.

I've never seen anyone being denied food and drink. It's normally relatives trying to feed someone with dysphagia inappropriate things who end up causing more damage.

Because we are so complacent.
We need a Guy Fawkes.

@Pelo22

Is it psoriatic arthritis you are suffering from? Very difficult now to get the injections, GPs are fond of fobbing patients off with much cheaper alternatives.

SueVineer · 01/01/2023 23:08

ofwarren · 01/01/2023 21:00

Terrifying
What would that mean? We'd all have to get insurance like the states?
My DS is only 8 and he's been so ill since birth. By 6 months old, we worked it out with one of the doctors that if we were American he would have had over a million dollars worth of treatment.
So upsetting to think if we'd have lived there, he would have died because there is no way we could have afforded that or insurance that would cover that amount of care.

It’s not at all how it works even in the us. There is generally care available for children who are uninsured- varies from state to state but medical care in the us is top notch.

RudsyFarmer · 01/01/2023 23:08

It’s not just going to disappear in a puff of smoke. It’s going to become more and more inaccessible to many and so those people will start to go private.

Sadly I have

but a lot of strange things go on in hospitals and I do think we've seen a lot of evidence of different clinicians interpreting rules different ways between me, mum and dad's hospital experiences over the years

my medical notes look like someone else's. It took me a while to realise there was no point trying to correct most of it.

anyway, I think it's good people talk about it, worst I've ever seen and it is deliberate. Night all.

I'm glad for you but genuinely amazed. My friend's teen waited 11 hours with a broken bone. Mum's done two 18 hour waits this year - stroke and suspected heart attack.

thecats can't figure out that one at all!

It's odd because myself and both of my children have had cause to use NHS services this year - all for different things, different levels of urgency and different areas (GP, hospital outpatients, 111 out of hours doctor etc).
All of our interactions have been efficient, timely and thorough. I've called my local 111 3 times in the last 12 months and they have picked up within a couple of rings each time. Even my GP is excellent.

Maybe it's just a postcode lottery?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/01/2023 23:11

I don’t think it will go. What government is actually going to dismantle something that the majority of the population support passionately? They’d be crazy.

It will struggle on until a better government sorts it, because Rishi is doing fuck all.

l live in a large city, and have lots of contact and appointments with the NHS. I can get a same day gp appointment, hospital appointments. The only thing causing issues round me is there’s no dentists.

Oh and I called my local dentist expecting to register as a private patient and they were prepared to register my whole family as NHS patients! There was an 8 week lead time to get an initial check up but I jumped at it and now I'm going next week!

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2023 23:13

There are plenty of other options as opposed to the States.

the government want a money making health care system and the states system makes massive amounts of money. So that’ll be the way they want to take it

No, cholinergic and spontaneous chronic urticaria (I'm on Xolair)

Nobody is trying to kill anyone if you think that phone the police , complain to PALS. All the medical staff I have worked with do our best to keep going . I would argue and say it's gone the other way and people are being kept alive with very very very poor quality of life

Where did that come from? I didn't say anyone was trying to kill anyone!

dad was kept alive very long with a very low quality of life.

SueVineer Medical care in US is about 18 whereas France is about 5 and U.K. 10 according to WHO

and the cost to the government is more than any other western country
