Dressing “sexy” infront of in laws

aibu to dress “sexy” infront of inlaws.

Obviously not talking lingerie or boobs spilling out but everytime I see my inlaws I wear sensible boring things that I think they’d “approve of” i.e a long sleeve jumper that would show 0 curves or a buttoned up to the neck floral dress.

…I know it’s normal to dress conservative when you first meet partners parents, but is it normal to then dress “sexier” if that is your normal style? For example I would normally wear over knee boots with tight jeans, or a mini skirt with black tights or a tight top (I’m E cup) so would look very “sexy”.

I just want to be myself, and not this polite librarian character ive created or AIBU and should tone it down infront of them?

As for looking like a polite librarian type, you obviously haven't encountered some of the librarians I worked with over the years!

I think the issue is the difference between aesthetically pleasing and sexy and to a large extent, that is in the eye of the beholder. Sexy, to me, is where an outfit has overstepped the line between accentuating an attractive silhouette and letting it all hang out (or pop out when you make a perfectly normal movement, like bending or leaning over, or sitting down), as that to me is not an aesthetically pleasing effect. But then, I don’t find women sexy in the first place, so it has to be very unsubtle, or something I think is actually very unattractive but also revealing, as then my assumption would be that the only possible reason for going out looking that ugly is the belief that it is appealing sexually. Men, and people from different cultures, no doubt have different opinions on exactly what is and is not “sexy,” however, and I do remember being surprised when a man commented that a dress I was wearing was sexy because, although it zipped right up to my neck, the zip was at the front, with a fairly large, circular zip pull. It hadn’t ever crossed my mind before that it was probably designed that way, with the very visible, round zip pull, to attract attention to the ease with which the dress could be undone!

I’m sorry, but anyone that has a big chest knows that wearing a tight top is not the same as if someone with small boobs wore it. Just like small boobed people can go braless but if a big chested person went braless it would look far too in your face.

E cup? They wouldn't be anywhere near your face, mate.

toocold54 · 29/12/2022 18:41

Need a pic of these outfits OP to determine how appropriate they are to wear in front of PIL.

Or would OP rather we posted ours?

LOLsloth · 29/12/2022 18:49

OP, would you please post a photo of yourself wearing the thigh-high boots and jeans and tight top? You can leave your face out of the shot.

I feel that I need to see what it looks before I can offer advice.

Probably a sex worker?

My bf had the same issue, but by wearing coords, gave the outfit a more deliberate, structured look and one that was 'put together'. Now he looks bang on-trend..

No harm in dressing a bit sexier, just not too slutty

Exactly!
It's such a tired old stereotype, isn't it?

I think that works. Don't know if it's too sexy for the OP, though.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 29/12/2022 18:59

None of that sounds sexy or unusual... I wear knee high boots and tight jeans to work. Loads of people do.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 29/12/2022 19:02

Oh yeah thigh highs are a bit sexier but tight T-shirts aren't (even if you're an ecup) and mini skirts are pretty accepted.

Unless they're strict catholics or something I doubt they'd care if you'd done it from the start but they might comment if they think you're gone from plain Jane to Hedy Lamar

Maireas · 29/12/2022 19:09

Catholics wouldn't mind.
Strict Presbyterians? Possibly.
Anyone noticing OP has an E cup? Unlikely.

Agree with a PP. Sounds tarty not sexy 😂

My eyes are a bit wonky at the moment, I read tarty as farty..... which puts a completely different spin on things!

Livedandlearned · 29/12/2022 19:26

I don't know why I was given a biscuit, it was true.

Over the knee boots with laces, on the school run every day.

She was and probably still is a prostitute.

Personally the boots always reminded me of a pantomime outfit.

I’m shocked at the comments on this thread. Women referring to another woman’s dress style as ‘tarty’, others making reference to prostitutes - how utterly disappointing.

OP, I completely understand your post. I think first impressions last and you rightly so dressed classier than usual. You don’t need to going forward though. Definitely switch it up if you want. They don’t have to like your style.

Just be you :)
