Delivery driver let himself into house

Firstly I know I should have locked the door but I was expecting family at any moment and had a sleeping baby on me. I was in the living room and heard the back door slam shut. I waited for a few moments thinking it was my sister arriving but nobody was here. I looked out the window and a van was just pulling away up the street. I went into the kitchen (where the back door is) and my Amazon parcels were in the middle of the floor. So the driver had let himself in and just put them on the floor and I feel a bit freaked out! They’re usually left by the back door or unfortunately sometimes on the front doorstep for all to see. When I go onto the app on my account it says they have been left in a rear porch so I can only assume he thought he was going into a porch. It doesn’t look like one though, it’s literally a back door straight into the kitchen, there’s a big pane of glass in the door and the blind was up. It looks like I need to phone up to make a complaint. AIBU to do this? I’ve asked my sister who’s now arrived who said that maybe he/she knew I’ve got a young baby so might have just been being helpful?!

Is it raining?

I'd feel a bit uncomfortable about it but it is actually pretty helpful.

Moonshine160 · 29/12/2022 15:57

@SomethingOriginal2 not raining but very windy so I’m wondering if he thought they might blow away?

They do it here, but I'm rural and have the same few drivers; a couple amazon guys, 1 Hermes guy and a couple dpd guys who do our route. So it's sort if just become normal for them to stick parcels in the front hall if the door is unlocked.
I know it's a temp or new driver whe they ring the bell!

Fairyliz · 29/12/2022 15:57

Well he’s done you a favour, not disturbed you, stopped your parcels being stolen from the front step and doesn’t appear to have taken anything?
I think you would be very unreasonable to report him. Would you also be complaining if he had knocked loudly and woken the baby?

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 29/12/2022 15:57

Mine has done that. Never thought it was a big deal tbh.

been and done it. · 29/12/2022 16:00

My daughter and family were sat in the sofa by the front window. The courier walked by opened the front door and came into the front room via the hallway dropped their items and buggered off...weird

AtTheNursingHome · 29/12/2022 16:00

He’s done you a favour and you want to complain about him ffs

whatisthisinmyburger · 29/12/2022 16:00

I get what you mean but I couldn’t be bothered about this personally. All of the delivery companies I use (DPD, Evri, Amazon) and our postie leave our parcels just inside the door and I’m grateful for it, it’s easier than it being taken back to the depot, left out in the rain or with a neighbour.

The only suggestion is to keep your door locked if you’re not comfortable. But I’m sure the driver thought they were doing you a good turn so I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

Yet people then rant if their parcel was left somewhere visible and stolen, if it was taken back to the depot etc. They can’t win! Grin

35965a · 29/12/2022 16:03

I wouldn’t complain. Always keep your door locked. Always. Next time it might not be a delivery guy who thinks he’s being helpful.

JoyBeorge · 29/12/2022 16:10

Isn't there already a topic about Amazon delivery men letting themselves into a house?

ThinWomansBrain · 29/12/2022 16:14

I think your assumption that he assumed it was some kind of porch/outhouse is probably correct - once in he'd have realised it was the kitchen.
If you're uncomfortable with it, lock the door.

Dacadactyl · 29/12/2022 16:16

He sounds like a legend and I would be grateful.

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 29/12/2022 16:19

He was either being kind or genuinely thought you had a porch & you want him to possibly lose his job over it?
That's really mean.

housemaus · 29/12/2022 16:19

Mine does this occasionally, I appreciate it to be honest - esp when it's raining and I've not heard the bell/am stuck in a meeting upstairs. I did feel a bit taken aback at first like you, but now I'm just grateful they're arsed enough not say I wasn't in and redeliver it a few days later.

TequilaNights · 29/12/2022 16:20

Rather this than leaving them out in the eliments or to be stolen.

But! I echo the above poster, if it was that easy for a delivery driver, next time it may be someone less friendly.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 29/12/2022 16:21

He sounds thoughtful to me. You on the other hand shouldn't have left your door unlocked if you don't want people coming in for whatever reason OP

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 29/12/2022 16:24

Our Amazon guy did that and hasn't done it since because our German shepherd lost his shit at him. I've never seen a guy run so fast.

Or the delivery driver should know not to enter homes without being invited in?

Our Amazon drivers never knock either and just leave our parcels on the doorstep without knowing whether we're in or not.

dutysuite · 29/12/2022 16:30

I wouldn’t like it. I once had someone open my door walk into my hall to leave a pizza menu. My front door was unlocked as seconds earlier I outside gardening. I called the pizza company about it as there was no need for the man to enter my house and it really worried me.

Cocolapew · 29/12/2022 16:34

DPD did this the other week in my house, I wasn't impressed tbh. All my lights were on its obvious I was in but he opened my front door and left them in my porch. My problem is the tiny porch leads to the living room and the connecting door will open when the front door is opened. My young dog was lying right beside and its just because I was there I managed to stop her streaking out the front door never to be seen again.
I have a note on the door asking for parcels to be left behind a planter.

ceecee32 · 29/12/2022 16:35

I had a food delivery due but had fractured a bone in my foot. Put a note on the door for Morrisons to say I would be there as quick as I could and door was open,. Heard a shout of "don't get up - I'll put it in the kitchen" .
Never been so grateful in my life to that lovely man

Floweryflora · 29/12/2022 16:35

Amazon drivers are paid so little. Please don’t phone and get this driver fired. As that’s what will happen. And not at Christmas, that would be awful. They likely thought they were helping. But trying to get them fired for it is not acceptable

KSAM · 29/12/2022 16:38

It looks like I need to phone up to make a complaint.

You don't need to make a complaint though, you just want to. I wouldn't want to get someone fired right on top of Xmas.

That’s a bit much, I don’t think you can blame the op like it’s to be expected folks enter your home if you don’t lock the door. What an odd post
