Delivery driver let himself into house

Firstly I know I should have locked the door but I was expecting family at any moment and had a sleeping baby on me. I was in the living room and heard the back door slam shut. I waited for a few moments thinking it was my sister arriving but nobody was here. I looked out the window and a van was just pulling away up the street. I went into the kitchen (where the back door is) and my Amazon parcels were in the middle of the floor. So the driver had let himself in and just put them on the floor and I feel a bit freaked out! They’re usually left by the back door or unfortunately sometimes on the front doorstep for all to see. When I go onto the app on my account it says they have been left in a rear porch so I can only assume he thought he was going into a porch. It doesn’t look like one though, it’s literally a back door straight into the kitchen, there’s a big pane of glass in the door and the blind was up. It looks like I need to phone up to make a complaint. AIBU to do this? I’ve asked my sister who’s now arrived who said that maybe he/she knew I’ve got a young baby so might have just been being helpful?!

Amazon drivers are paid so little. Please don’t phone and get this driver fired. As that’s what will happen. And not at Christmas, that would be awful. They likely thought they were helping. But trying to get them fired for it is not acceptable

This. He’s dropping off things you ordered, not just a random man dropping off a pizza menu. Please don’t complain and get him in trouble when it’s such a hard job to begin with.

I think your assumption that he assumed it was some kind of porch/outhouse is probably correct - once in he'd have realised it was the kitchen.
If you're uncomfortable with it, lock the door.

This. You asked him to leave it in the rear porch. Don’t complain about him. You should’ve locked the door tbh.

TimeForMeToF1y · 29/12/2022 16:40

I've read many many threads about this, theres never an concensus, some people think it's quite normal (usually rural tyoes) and others cant even imagine a situation where every entrance to the house is double locked and bolted at all times

Nothing bad has happened, if you don't want a repeat keep the door locked, a big old non issue imo

jtaeapa · 29/12/2022 16:41

You really must lock the door if you don't want this to happen.

It's impossible to tell whether he was a decent guy just being helpful (even if not raining, it has been intermittently raining today and the weather is cold and windy) or whether he fancied a look in your house or to nick something.

PenanceAdair · 29/12/2022 16:42

I wouldn't report. He may have tried to knock and the door opened slightly, so he gently dropped the parcel and left. If you generally leave your door open then I'd not think it a big deal but if not, I'd be careful for next time.

RWeatherwax · 29/12/2022 16:42

We had a delivery driver do this. Once. They opened the door two find two unimpressed spaniels growling at a stranger in their house. Funnily enough they’ve not tried it since.

I get they are trying to help but there is something I really don’t like about just coming into someone else’s house like that. They are strangers? It’s not like being a delivery driver gives them a free pass.

PearlclutchersInc · 29/12/2022 16:43

You don't call anyone, you leave feedback for the driver on the Amazon website (via the feedback email) and complain.

NotTooOldPaul · 29/12/2022 16:43

If we are expecting a delivery, I always leave our front door unlocked. Some delivery companies such as Royal Mail, DPD and Evri simply put the delivery inside the door, others, annoyingly, ring the bell.
I like deliveries to be quick and easy so inside my door is perfect.

He sounds thoughtful to me. You on the other hand shouldn't have left your door unlocked if you don't want people coming in for whatever reason OP
That’s a bit much, I don’t think you can blame the op like it’s to be expected folks enter your home if you don’t lock the door. What an odd post@Moonshine160
Wind your neck in I never said anything of the sort.

Ellie1015 · 29/12/2022 16:44

Really don't know what your complaint would be?? If you are uncomfortable just lock door always going forward.

Fleurdaisy · 29/12/2022 16:45

I wouldn’t complain, he was only trying to be helpful. But if it freaks you then definitely keep the door locked.
You could create a safe place outside so parcels are left there.

Iguanainanigloo · 29/12/2022 16:47

Christ, I'd be more than grateful if my parcels even made it to my front door right now! The amount that say they've delivered them, never to be seen, or end up the next road (or 20) over! He obviously didn't want to leave it out in the elements/risk it getting nicked. Probably should have knocked, and yes, isn't great to just let himself in people's homes for his own safety as well as others (protective dogs would be one I wouldn't want to risk!), but I'd just be grateful I safely received my parcel on this occasion, and no harm done.

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 29/12/2022 16:19

He was either being kind or genuinely thought you had a porch & you want him to possibly lose his job over it?
That's really mean.

This .

At least he left it in a safe place.

Cosmos123 · 29/12/2022 16:50

Stop being a drama lama

Idontevenknow · 29/12/2022 16:51

The fact they're in the middle of the floor makes me think the driver hasn't came inside, or they would be sat on the worktop. He's probably just opened the door and plonked them in- I don't really see it as a big deal to be honest

This quite often happens to us. We do have a porch but it's a proper extension to our home so I'd accept a few might think they can leave it in there. However they don't knock or ring the doorbell first therefore are simply doing it to save themselves time.

It's not helpful, it's intrusive. We're nearly always in and have a large store next to the front door where things can be safely left. This behaviour made us get a camera doorbell and occasionally lock the door

Moonshine160 · 29/12/2022 16:55

Thanks for your comments, I won’t complain or report. This hasn’t happened before and I didn’t realise it was the norm for drivers to do this, they are only left around the back if nobody is home and on this occasion the driver didn’t even knock. As I previously mentioned I don’t usually leave the door unlocked but my son was falling asleep on me and my sister was due to arrive at any moment and I didn’t want to get up and wake him.

I personally wouldn’t like this

I had an Amazon driver knock my door and as I was approaching the door was trying to turn the door handle to come in. I opened the door and I think my fave said it all. Leave it on the doorstep , don’t come into my house please

I understand I have probably overreacted judging by the comments on here, but “People coming in for whatever reason?” Unless it’s someone I know I don’t expect anyone to walk into my home uninvited regardless of whether the door is unlocked. Your comment is weird

OP posts:
ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 29/12/2022 17:05

How can an unlocked door be safe? This is how people come in to your home. You lock your door to stop that from happening. What is weird about that? It's common sense to me.
If someone wants to come and see you they knock and then you let them in. You say you have children? Keep them safe by locking your door. It's not rocket science

watchfulwishes · 29/12/2022 17:06

I agree he shouldn't have come in but as he did nothing but drop the parcels I would not complain as it would be awful for him to lose his job.

I keep my door locked all the time and have a door chime so I know when it has been opened. My parents - more rural location - think I am mad, but I live where I live.

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/12/2022 17:09

Ours always does it (and Royal Mail) unless I’ve got a note on the door to say I’m on nights (in which case the door is locked).

KousaMahshi · 29/12/2022 17:14

whatisthisinmyburger · 29/12/2022 16:03

Yet people then rant if their parcel was left somewhere visible and stolen, if it was taken back to the depot etc. They can’t win! Grin

Are the two alternatives either breaking into your house or leaving them on the street to be stolen?
I suppose they could win by doing neither of those things and actually doing their job properly? Radical thought.

Ireallywantsomechips · 29/12/2022 17:14

I wouldn’t like this either OP. I’ve had delivery drivers try my door handle and then just leave the parcel and that’s enough to freak me out, although my town isn’t exactly unknown for burglaries in broad daylight. For obvious reasons my door is always locked.

I now have a ring doorbell and funnily enough no one has tried a door handle since, even if they have still had to knock before I get to the door. Probably just a coincidence.

I guess the thing is they are mostly men who don’t think “oh there may be a woman alone in there that I might spook” and instead think “I’ll just chuck it in here for them”
