Delivery driver let himself into house

Firstly I know I should have locked the door but I was expecting family at any moment and had a sleeping baby on me. I was in the living room and heard the back door slam shut. I waited for a few moments thinking it was my sister arriving but nobody was here. I looked out the window and a van was just pulling away up the street. I went into the kitchen (where the back door is) and my Amazon parcels were in the middle of the floor. So the driver had let himself in and just put them on the floor and I feel a bit freaked out! They’re usually left by the back door or unfortunately sometimes on the front doorstep for all to see. When I go onto the app on my account it says they have been left in a rear porch so I can only assume he thought he was going into a porch. It doesn’t look like one though, it’s literally a back door straight into the kitchen, there’s a big pane of glass in the door and the blind was up. It looks like I need to phone up to make a complaint. AIBU to do this? I’ve asked my sister who’s now arrived who said that maybe he/she knew I’ve got a young baby so might have just been being helpful?!

Yes, there is that, but if you've got through adolescence and into adulthood without being prosecuted, it's far and away most likely that you aren't a criminal.

He’s done you a favour and you want to complain about him ffs

Also, some people actually leave their doors open if expecting a parcel. Usually with a note but hey ho.

Man, are you naive.

Same thing happened to me on Christmas Eve, I had left the front door unlocked as my son was due to come back in the next 5 minutes. I was upstairs, heard the door close unusually quietly (we're a family of door slammers!!!) and found an Amazon delivery in the front hall (not a porch).
I don't like the fact that he didn't knock, and I don't like the fact that I made a basic safety mistake. I decided he probably didn't knock because he had loads of parcels to deliver before he could go home himself.
And next time he may knock, as I'm sure our hallway of doom has scared him off (think coats, bags, unpacked shopping and rugby boots -the Amazon proof of delivery photo is a total unit)
Hangs head in shame 😂!!!

Man, are you naive.

The exceedingly rare type of criminal mastermind, who never gets caught, is unlikely to be wanting a job at Amazon!

its not about being a criminal mastermind, but most casual criminals get away with it. The amazon driver who lifted the twenty note you left in the fruit bowl and you didn't notice for a few days, and couldn't prove anythingt if you did, is going to get away with it.

Are the two alternatives either breaking into your house.....

Nobody broke into anyone's house. Opening an unlocked door is not 'breaking in'.

Amazon drivers are paid so little. Please don’t phone and get this driver fired. As that’s what will happen. And not at Christmas, that would be awful. They likely thought they were helping. But trying to get them fired for it is not acceptable

"Amazon drivers are paid so little." 🤣🤣🤣

chipswitheveryting · 29/12/2022 20:14

I've recommended Amazon drivers do this at mine and they do it regularly now. I often have them positive feedback afterwards too in the Amazon app. It's just much easier for me, they've delivered, my parcels are safe. I have a lobby so they don't see in my hallway and me running around half dressed.

People like me have probably made this happen to you.

It is still illegal entry and (depending on context) still a crime you can be arrested for.

Evenstar · 29/12/2022 20:22

I would never leave the door unlocked, if you were burgled as a result of doing so I don’t think your insurance would pay out.

forwhatitsworth22 · 29/12/2022 20:24

I'd be freaked out!! He let himself into your house. That's not right.

Amandasummers · 29/12/2022 20:26

My postie opens my front door and chucks shit on my stairs just inside sometimes if I dont answer, I don't mind but then I've got to know him over the years I guess. I'm sure he'd get a bollocking for it in theory but was probably trying to be helpful!

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/12/2022 17:09

Ours always does it (and Royal Mail) unless I’ve got a note on the door to say I’m on nights (in which case the door is locked).

So you leave a note on the door to say you aren't in for the night? Sweet of you to be so helpful to any opportunistic burglars passing through the neighbourhood.

girlmom21 · 29/12/2022 20:31

Why do your parcels always get taken to the back door? Is there a note on your front door or Amazon account?

MissingMoominMamma · 29/12/2022 20:33

I used to deliver flowers. If there was no answer, I would always try the door and lean through and put them on the porch or hall floor. If it was locked, I’d leave them with a neighbour (but that was sometimes complained about if the recipient didn’t like the neighbour).

I thought it was better than taking them back to the shop for them to pick up…

No system is perfect, of course, but they go to great lengths to try to weed out bad players. Any sort of allegation leads to instant dismissal, as they tell you on the training week.

We had a woman dismissed.

Her offence? She left, after knocking several times and the guy ran out to her van and shouted abuse at her. As she tried to get his parcel, he pushed her and spat on her.

She pulled her mask off and called him a dirty bastard.

She was sacked for taking her mask off (2020).

And she shouldn't have been. But a driver opening someones door and entering the house absolutely should be.

If Op complains and he gets fired, it's entirely his own fault. He was wrong.

VioletLemon · 29/12/2022 21:10

OMG Nooooooooo! Am I bizarrely over the top about privacy etc? I'd throw a fit if a delivery driver entered my property without permission. Surely they could have been propped up somewhere outside. What next.... Just eat drivers bring the food into your kitchen... Tesco unload shopping for you.... I must be very apprehensive!!

GereWeGoAgain · 29/12/2022 21:50

@VioletLemonmy JustEat delivery driver has come in and watched half a film with me before 😂. I clearly order too often.

Gingerkittykat · 29/12/2022 21:51

I had an Amazon delivery driver open my door, come into the hall and shout when my DD was home alone.

I did complain and Amazon took it seriously, they had some kind of manager contact me for more details and sent me a hamper to say sorry.

Nobody has the right to enter my house without my consent and I'm now very carefull about keeping the door locked when I'm in the house.

JockTamsonsBairns · 29/12/2022 22:13

I am so grateful to the delivery drivers who open my door and leave my stuff inside. It saves me the hassle of trying to rearrange delivery for another day, or trying to arrange collection from the Royal Mail depot which is 40mins drive away.
I live in a quiet, low crime area, and my doors are never locked during the day. I'd hate to live in fear, of the sort I often read about on here.

piglet81 · 29/12/2022 22:18

I must be a cynical lifelong city dweller but I just can’t get my head round the idea of a front door that can be opened without a key. How can you ever feel safe knowing that any lunatic could walk in?!

Whatafielddayfortheheat · 29/12/2022 22:21

We moved from London to a very rural part of the UK. It was entirely standard in the rural area for postmen/delivery people to:

  • open your front door to leave parcels
  • open your car door to leave parcels
  • push them through open windows
  • expect you to engage in a proper chat if they happened to see you.

It was also entirely normal for neighbours /friends to open the door without knocking and come in to find you to chat or whatever.

I found it really odd, but since moving back to a big city I kind of miss it, especially when parcels get left in the rain or returned to the depot!

Reindeersnooker · 29/12/2022 22:23

Ours does this all the time.

You should watch Sorry I missed you.
