Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

OP posts:

My DH says sconn - instead of scone. Like rhyming with 'on,' instead of rhyming with 'bone.' Makes me furious. COVVID would give me the rage.

lieselotte · 27/12/2022 16:49

When covid was still relatively new there was a Futurelearn course about it and the woman on the videos called it co-vee.

But this is one of the great pronunciation debates of all time, surely you’ve heard that half the population say it to rhyme with gone and the other half say it to rhyme with bone?

Your DH says it right imho.

RSintes · 27/12/2022 16:54

My DM says Cov-vid, orang-U-tan, tikTOK and was saying micro-warvay way before Nigella. She's been gently ribbed about it for years.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 10:47

I pronounce it 'Covvid'. It's short for 'Coronavirus'. You wouldn't say 'Co - ronavirus' - it's 'Corona' as in the word 'Coronation'.

I have read this so many times and have no idea what this means.
None of these sentences are connected.

EasterIsland · 27/12/2022 16:56

YABU

Many of the scientists working on the actual virus and vaccination experiments pronounced it “Covvid.”

There are many worse errors -saying “arkse” instead of “ask” or using the awful phrase “We were sat in the front” or
”we were stood in the line.”

Fairislefandango · 27/12/2022 16:56

My DH says sconn - instead of scone.

Quite rightly so.

Icantfindanewname · 27/12/2022 16:59

My ever so slightly batty mum pronounces Covid as "the bug". It's as if Covid doesn't exist in her world, and I am TOTALLY unreasonable in expecting her to call it what the rest of the country calls it, however it's pronounced 😡

Teeth itch warning: EXpresso instead of espresso

DrMarciaFieldstone · 27/12/2022 17:08

En-daaa-mame beans

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 27/12/2022 17:13

What an utter coont.

Squirrellane · 27/12/2022 17:22

My ex-neighbour had 'long covis'

Teeth itch warning: EXpresso instead of espresso

Ah. So this depends on which country it is said!

BrandNewBicep · 27/12/2022 20:16

I have a friend who calls it Covis as in Hovis. Every. Single .Time. I can't tell you how annoying it is.

XenoBitch · 27/12/2022 20:19

Dr John Campbell on YouTube has a ton of content about Covid, and he pronounces it 'Covvid' too.

I overheard someone in a cafe speaking about a friend with cancer. Said it had spread to their lymph "nods".

BanjoVio · 27/12/2022 20:23

planefullofotters · 27/12/2022 10:56

It’s not short for coronavirus. Covid is a TYPE of coronavirus.

It’s an acronym (I learned this on a Radio 4 podcast about it):
COronaVIrus Disease 2019 = COVID19
You’re right that there are several coronaviruses. The common cold is a coronavirus.

Nobody pronounces it Covvid other that people who are wrong about everything. That’s why it isn’t spelt Covvid.

I say “stood in line”, “sat in front” - I’m not wrong, it’s my accent/dialect and I wouldn’t write like that

Bawdrip · 27/12/2022 20:35

clary · 27/12/2022 10:53

I get the stress wrong and my kids laugh.

WhatsApp I say like what's up instead if stressing the 'Whats'

Hot dog I say like actual dogs that are overheated- stressing the dogs not the hot 🤷‍♀️🤣

My dp says welly boots with the emphasis on the boots not the welly. Like it's as opposed to welly shoes. Nobody in the world says this so it puzzles me why he does this

Scone rhymes with gone. Especially in Scotland. Unless you were talking about the place and then it's "scune.'

EasterIsland · 27/12/2022 20:53

Well you are wrong. Your usage may be a local dialect, but it is grammatically non-standard.

I also assume that the biologists working on COVID do know quite a lot about it, including variations in how the word - which is after all an acronym - is pronounced.

whatever1980 · 27/12/2022 20:57

Mine says

"Brush your teeths"

Teeth is plural no need for the 's' - I'm sure he just does it to wind me

pocketvenuss · 27/12/2022 20:59

@thelobsterquadrille FOMO, POTUS, NATO, NASDAQ ...Many acronyms aren't pronounced as you think they should be then. You are sticking to some rule that doesn't exist.

Look mate - people who went to northern comps say “sat” and “stood” and “we was here” - we know it isn’t grammatically correct, but speaking with a local dialect isn’t an “error”. If I wrote that in an essay for you, you’d be correct to knock off marks.

Also I was taught by an anatomy lecturer who called the abdomen the ab-doh-men, emphasis on the “doh”. He was an expert in his field and he was still fucking wrong okay 😂
