Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

OP posts:

I’m with you OP. Mine says ‘masssaaaaagge’ with a soft ‘g’ like he’s doing some sort of weird french accent. It creeps me the hell out.

I’ve tried mentioning it but he just looks hurt and says, but it is ‘masssaaaagge’

🤢

I'm a learning technologist (and I work closely with IT) and I've never heard it called anything other than eye-oh-ess. I just googled and you're right, apparently either is fine. I absolutely don't ever want to hear it called eye-oss though Grin

I think I'd assume someone was talking about being on their 'igh 'oss if I heard eyeoss.

Willowswood · 27/12/2022 15:51

Someone I know pronounced it 'covvid' in front of a group of us, and everyone burst out laughing.

😂😂 When we see her now, we say 'covvid' lol.

It's 100% Co-vid as in 'co (go) vid (video). Unless you need to go back nursery school and learn basic phonics.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 27/12/2022 15:51

Can. Some one tell me if we are pronouncing it right we do co. As In company and vid as in video.

Luckycatt · 27/12/2022 15:53

It’s not short for coronavirus. Covid is a TYPE of coronavirus

Covid is not a virus. It's the disease caused by this particular corona virus. Covid, the name of the disease, comes from COrona VIrus Disease. COVID.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 27/12/2022 15:57

Ewww. It’s ‘convid’ to DFamily member here… how on earth can you not hear everyone else?

FKATondelayo · 27/12/2022 15:58

DH calls the president of the USA 'Bidden'.
Grounds for divorce I think.

RobertaFirmino · 27/12/2022 16:00

How about one of the things we take for the symptoms of covid - paracetamol? Is it para-SET-amol or para-SEET-amol? This is the cause of many disagreements between me and DH over the years.

PAFMO · 27/12/2022 16:03

Growing up I called it paraseetomol. Now I call it parasetomol.

Also ibuPROfen or iBUprofen

jcyclops · 27/12/2022 16:05

FBI is an initialism
NASA is an acronym
COVID is neither - it is a portmanteau word

It derives from COrona VIrus Disease

Other examples of portmanteau words are brexit, smog, motel, email, Spam, malware, sitcom.

Portmanteau words are not always pronounced the same as their root words:
romcom - does not use the long "o" of romance.
botox - does not use the short "o" of botulism
modem - does not use the long "e" of demodulator

I think most people say it with a soft g, don't they?

ScrambledEggForBrains · 27/12/2022 16:39

A couple of ladies I know say “covis” ?????
They aren’t known to each other either as they are Hairdressing clients of mine. I really want to correct them but it probably won’t be good for business.

Because we're not Donald Trump.

I would just say, 'do you mean covid'? If they question you, just say 'oh just checking I wondered if there was a new virus and that's what it was called'

LikeTearsInRain · 27/12/2022 16:45

Covfefe

Bluekerfuffle · 27/12/2022 16:47

@shinynewapple22 , it does seem to be the same for some people, but I’ve always said non as non and none as nun, and so had everyone else I knew until I met DH. The nun for non really gets on my nerves.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 27/12/2022 16:47

My DH says sconn - instead of scone. Like rhyming with 'on,' instead of rhyming with 'bone.' Makes me furious. COVVID would give me the rage.
