Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

@pocketvenuss If it's virus, it doesn't change that it should be "covv-eyed" as per the PP's logic.

Mine too. Nobody says:
Eggs Husband, or
Eggs, Y, Z, or
Doctor Eggs, or
let's have seggs

Oh I laughed out out at this (‘seggs’ 🤣). I had a teacher at school who’d always talk about EGGzams instead of exAMS. Made me feel sick.

Well, he was correct about the phonemes, just not the word stress.
/ɪɡˈzæm/

The reason why other words with an "X" are pronounced with a /g/ has been covered in posts after the one you quoted.

Brexit can be pronounced with either a /k/ or a /g/ (probably because it's not only a neologism but also a portmanteau word. These usually take the pronunciation of the original word, so the pronunciation of "exit" would be the most usual, though both are correct)
Example is a /g/
Exit is a /k/

Also, says caSHEW nuts (like he is sneezing) rather than CAshew.

I say caSHEW and so did both my parents. I've never really noticed how anybody else pronounces it, which makes me thing most of them must be pronouncing it the same as me, or I would notice.

PAFMO are you saying it is actively wrong to pronounce example as "iksample"? That's going to take some time to unlearn after over 50 years, if so.

I'm not saying it. Dictionaries giving the correct pronunciation are.

I had to check it in the dictionary as I found it fascinating and curious that "exit" was a /k/ and "exam" was a /g/

I'm a descriptivist linguist anyway so would just observe that some people say /k/ for example, even though it's not the standard, whilst others use /g/

Yanbu I was always taken aback when radio people did this

Plus other words that are randomly wrong

Goldenbear · 30/01/2023 18:54

I say it like your DH. My MIL says, 'Toona' for 'Tuna' and we both pronounce the name, Jacob as 'Jacub', one of DS's friends, my DH thinks that is hilarious.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/01/2023 18:58

Well we call it "covey-dee" because we can. And we know it is very wrong.

Raveon2000 · 30/01/2023 19:46

I don't understand what you mean by covvid
It is stressing the vid as in coVID
Or is it saying it like 2 separate words cov vid?

redspottedmug · 30/01/2023 20:36

Covv-id as in horrid

As opposed to co-vid.
