Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

@Zib i want to agree with you because it sounds so annoying but my DB is a senior specialist who has worked on C19 since the beginning of 2020 and he pronounces it covvid (short o like octopus) 🤷‍♀️

SmartWatch · 27/12/2022 12:22

Acronyms are a type of abbreviation according to these guys www.rd.com/article/acronym-vs-abbreviation-whats-the-difference

Hope your DH is doing ok with the prostat cancer PP and agree that's a tough one to correct! My bug bear is people who say 'pacifically' instead of 'specifically'.

I quite like pompadoms! Makes them sound fancy 🙂

RambamThankyouMam · 27/12/2022 12:22

A friend of mine calls it covvidd. He also pronounced Ebola as "EBBER-ler". Dickhead.

Soproudoflionesses · 27/12/2022 12:22

Yeah he needs to go op!

luckylavender · 27/12/2022 12:22

ladygindiva · 27/12/2022 10:44

Yanbu. Ltb. Mine says " tuthpaste" instead of toothpaste. It's a real problem.

Is he Welsh?

thelobsterquadrille · 27/12/2022 12:23

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss the very definition of acronym in the OED says that acronyms are abbreviations 🙈

You even posted it yourself 40 minutes ago as one of your arguments 🤣

GraceAnatomy · 27/12/2022 12:24

My mispronounced bugbear is when people pronounce the letters EX as Eggz.

Brexit - Breggzit
Example - Eggzample
Exit - Eggzit

Zib · 27/12/2022 12:26

@SouperWoman that is oddly comforting. I will use that thought to suppress my irritation

Michael Gove also pronounces it as Covvid.
But that’s ok, I often mispronounce his name too, as Cunt.

pharaohrocher · 27/12/2022 12:26

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 10:47

I pronounce it 'Covvid'. It's short for 'Coronavirus'. You wouldn't say 'Co - ronavirus' - it's 'Corona' as in the word 'Coronation'.

In what accent does the first syllable of corona sound like that of coronation?!

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2022 12:27

righthererightnow10 · 27/12/2022 12:10

Or is he pronouncing it cow-vid? I don't understand

It's not difficult, he’s saying the cov bit like the beginning of “Coventry” not “cove” rhyming with rove like most people. Got it now?

tiredfriday · 27/12/2022 12:27

Vericle instead of vehicle

help me

The point I'm making is that nowhere does the OED describe 'Covid19' as an acronym. Acronyms might be a form of abbreviation, but not all abbreviations are acronyms. The OED distinguishes between the two, hence 'MOT' is described as an acronym, and Covid19 as a shortening.

SmartWatch · 27/12/2022 12:32

But it's not a shortening of one word. It's three three words put together using some of their initial letters. Or a group of shortenings. A.K.A an acronym.

Fremdschämen · 27/12/2022 12:34

EnyoClytemnestra · 27/12/2022 11:39

No, it is not irrelevent. Still very prevalent, nasty and contagious, and will continue to be as long as people continue to arrogantly dismiss it

Indeed.

And I doubt the thousands of people still unable to return to work due to Long Covid thinks it "irrelevant", either.

*think not "thinks".

Is MN ever going to have an edit function?

SmartWatch · 27/12/2022 12:36

The University of Edinburgh, top RG university and place that tight me scientific conventions, thinks it's an acronym blogs.ed.ac.uk/website-communications/covid-19-acronym/

BearSoFair · 27/12/2022 12:41

Mine seems to think a dash means an 'er' sound, so he had an ex-er-ray when he might have broken an ankle. We know a Sarah-Jane who doesn't get an 'er' but an emphasised 'AH' on the Sarah. I don't know how she feels about it but it makes me irrationally angry!

He used to emphasise the SHOOT in Fruit Shoot when DC were small as well. "Should I get some fruit SHOOT while I'm shopping?"

ZittiEBuoni · 27/12/2022 12:42

Long 'o' in the middle of words is an Anglophone thing.

Totally agree with the PP about the pronunciation of 'ex' though - 'Brexit' is one of my most hated words to begin with, pronouncing it 'Breggzit' sends me over the edge Xmas Angry.

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2022 12:44

Fruit SHOOT is brilliant. Grin

Sunnytwobridges · 27/12/2022 12:45

My ex pronounced women as woman. Many years later I asked him why he used the singular form of woman for plural and he said no one says wo-MEN. Um yeah I know🙄. Definitely gave me the ick 😂

MotorwayDiva · 27/12/2022 12:46

My parents pronounce it covit.. I refuse to discuss it with them any more

BearSoFair · 27/12/2022 12:48

Oh and there's Mary Bear-y on TV too! That one does make me smile though!

Staggersaurus · 27/12/2022 12:57

My DH pronounces Joe Biden as Bidden 🤮

MIL says thee-ATE-er for theatre which is really odd. It doesn’t fit in with the rest of her way of speaking.

clearlyclelia · 27/12/2022 12:57

clary · 27/12/2022 10:53

I get the stress wrong and my kids laugh.

WhatsApp I say like what's up instead if stressing the 'Whats'

Hot dog I say like actual dogs that are overheated- stressing the dogs not the hot 🤷‍♀️🤣

Tbf that would drive me bonkers too 🤣

It's like Miranda's mum saying Lady Ga-GAH
