Repeatedly,

Every time I feel a little twist of contempt.

It's Covid, Co as in .co.uk and vid as in video. Isn't it? AIBU?

It's not short for Coronavirus

Er, yes it is.

LikeTearsInRain · 27/12/2022 21:21

I call it SARS-CoV-2

Scooopsahoy · 27/12/2022 21:45

I know a few people who say ‘covvid’. They’re all elderly, quite posh, men. I’ve no idea why that demographic would be more likely to pronounce it like that.

Duckswaddle · 27/12/2022 21:48

My FIL says covvid - stupid pronunciation. He’s very posh and it’s very affected. Hate it.

ladygindiva · 27/12/2022 23:22

Bawdrip · 27/12/2022 20:35

My dp says welly boots with the emphasis on the boots not the welly. Like it's as opposed to welly shoes. Nobody in the world says this so it puzzles me why he does this

I say it like your DP...never occurred to me I was wrong 🤣

Snoopsnoggysnog · 27/12/2022 23:30

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 10:47

I pronounce it 'Covvid'. It's short for 'Coronavirus'. You wouldn't say 'Co - ronavirus' - it's 'Corona' as in the word 'Coronation'.

what? It’s not short for coronavirus! Confused

Whaaat?

Wheredoallthepensgo · 27/12/2022 23:48

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss

No it's not short for coronavirus Grin omg nearly 3 years on and people still don't grasp the basic scientific facts!

OliviaFlaversham · 27/12/2022 23:52

My DH says pinguin for penguin. I think he has just said it incorrectly for so long that he cannot unlearn it. Also, says caSHEW nuts (like he is sneezing) rather than CAshew.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 28/12/2022 00:02

My DH says Los Vegas instead of Las Vegas. Drives me mad.
my tweens hate the way I pronounce bubble tea. Apparently I say it wrong Hmm

Snoopsnoggysnog · 28/12/2022 00:05

FKATondelayo · 27/12/2022 15:58

DH calls the president of the USA 'Bidden'.
Grounds for divorce I think.

Oh my DH does this as well! Just why?

theculture · 28/12/2022 00:21

@MandyMotherOfBrian
. . . mispronunciation of Gove . . .SmileSmile

asdhelp123 · 28/12/2022 00:32

How do you say it, @Snoopsnoggysnog?

Snoopsnoggysnog · 28/12/2022 00:35

I say bubble TEA. According to the tweens that’s wrong and I should say “BUBBLE tea” with the emphasis on the first word

Isittimeformynapyet · 28/12/2022 01:04

GraceAnatomy · 27/12/2022 12:24

My mispronounced bugbear is when people pronounce the letters EX as Eggz.

Brexit - Breggzit
Example - Eggzample
Exit - Eggzit

Mine too. Nobody says:
Eggs Husband, or
Eggs, Y, Z, or
Doctor Eggs, or
let's have seggs

PineCone74 · 28/12/2022 01:46

Mirabai · 27/12/2022 11:28

I pronounce the online shop WoolOvers ‘Wool Lovers’. Because I thought WoolOvers sounded silly. Much to the hilarity of my family.

Oh, I so agree! Delighted to have found somebody else who thinks wool lovers sounds better than ‘wool overs’ I thought I was alone!

Bleachmycloths · 28/12/2022 03:41

Absolutely NOBODY says ‘Covvid ’. He sounds like a dick.

BoxOfCats · 28/12/2022 05:05

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/12/2022 10:47

I pronounce it 'Covvid'. It's short for 'Coronavirus'. You wouldn't say 'Co - ronavirus' - it's 'Corona' as in the word 'Coronation'.

But the "id" in Covid stands for "identity". By your logic shouldn't you pronounce it "covv-eyed"?

Isittimeformynapyet · 28/12/2022 06:35

Snoopsnoggysnog · 28/12/2022 00:35

I say bubble TEA. According to the tweens that’s wrong and I should say “BUBBLE tea” with the emphasis on the first word

Of course you should - there are lots of teas, so the first word indicates what sort of tea you're talking about so takes the emphasis.

Similarly it would sound odd to say; fountain pen, marker pen or pig pen.

PAFMO · 28/12/2022 07:15

Generally compound nouns (bubble tea, corkscrew, etc) have the stress on the first element. It's not to do with the meaning though, but the syllables. Often, the second element of a compound has one syllable "tea" and one syllable words don't carry word stress as word stress. (Compound verbs and adjectives have the stress usually on the second part of the compound)

PineCone74 · 28/12/2022 01:46

Oh, I so agree! Delighted to have found somebody else who thinks wool lovers sounds better than ‘wool overs’ I thought I was alone!

So do I. Grin Took me years followed by an eye roll to realise what it actually was.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 28/12/2022 07:46

IME the people who say COVID in an unusual way tend to be a certain type of person. I know someone who always says Covid-19 but he's so self important that it fits with everything else about him.
My xh always said Michael Guv, rather than Gohve. Not the only reason I divorced him, but it did lead to more discussion on the man than I needed.
I say Wool Lovers too.

custardbear · 28/12/2022 07:52

I know virologists who say it both ways ... it doesn't matter. It's just an acronym too
I say co vid too
Covvid, even if corona is not pronounced a long 'co' virus is a different sound too - vy type sound .. so perhaps if that is correct about the 'Co' being a short sound, the vi part should be a long sound co-viiii-d
Sounds stupid 🤔

EasterIsland · 28/12/2022 14:05

No it's not short for coronavirus Grin omg nearly 3 years on and people still don't grasp the basic scientific facts!

Indeed, you don't grasp basic scientific facts, @Wheredoallthepensgo after 3 years!

Here's the University of Edinburgh (one of the oldest in the UK, and a world-leading research-led scientific centre):

Here's the UK government glossary (scroll down):

@BoxOfCats But the "id" in Covid stands for "identity". By your logic shouldn't you pronounce it "covv-eyed"?
No it doesn't. The VI is for virus. D is for disease. What did you think the 'V' was for?
